A method for evaluating a solder joint portion by means of which a part and a substrate are joined to each other includes a preparation process for preparing the substrate including the solder joint portion, a thermal shock process for applying thermal shock to the solder joint portion multiple times, and an evaluation process for obtaining a change of a crystal grain size in the solder joint portion caused by the application of the thermal shock so as to evaluate a lifespan of the solder joint portion based on the change of the crystal grain size obtained.

A magnetic circuit member contains a matrix portion including iron and silicon; and graphite particles in the matrix. Each of the graphite particles has either a spherical shape or a compact vermicular shape. The inclusion of graphite particles having a relatively low conductivity in the matrix portion having a good magnetic property prevents eddy currents from forming in the magnetic circuit member in an alternating magnetic field, thus preserving the original magnetic property found in the absence of the alternating magnetic field. Each of the graphite particles has a spherical or compact vermicular shape that does not intercept magnetic flux passing through the material forming the magnetic circuit member. The graphite contained in the material improves liquidity of the melted material in casting, thus the magnetic circuit member can be manufactured by casting.

A casting is produced by centrifugal casting in which molten metal of gray cast iron is poured into a cavity formed in a mold during rotation of the mold under centrifugal force. The casting comprises a gray cast iron region and a spheroidal graphite cast iron region from which the graphite structure is gradually transformed toward the gray cast iron region through an intermediate region of vermicular graphite. The spheroidal graphite region and the intermediate region are formed by a reaction of the molten metal with spheroidizing agent in the cavity during rotation of the mold and solidification of the molten metal. The spheroidizing agent is provided in the cavity to a position where the casting is to be increased in strength and abrasion resistance. The spheroidizing agent can be introduced along with the molten metal through the pouring gate into the mold cavity to a defined position of casting.

A method of forming a metallic composite product having a specific gravity no greater than 1.8 and a thermal expansion no greater than 16.times.10.sup.-6 .degree. C. in a preheated mold. The portion of the mold between a cavity and the gate has a stainless steel wire gauge for retaining particles. The mold is filled with screened fly ash, glass, hollow spheres having a particle size in the range of 50 to 200 micrometers and a globularness of at least 90%, which has been preheated to the same temperature as the mold. Molten aluminum alloy is injected into the mold at a pressure in the range of from 40 to 80 kgf cm.sup.2 at the gate and at a flow velocity in the range of 0.08 to 0.20 m/second.
