A label printing apparatus includes a liquid crystal display unit for displaying an input character string and a message corresponding to each operation stage, a printing unit for printing a character string on each label, a storage unit for storing each data, and a CPU for performing each processing and control. Label information specifying sizes and the like of various types of labels, sheet numbers corresponding to the label information, character size information defining character sizes, and the like are stored in the storage unit. The CPU specifies label information corresponding to the sheet number and selects a maximum printable character size from a character size table as an initial value on the basis of a printing area. The character size is changed so that the horizontal length of an input character string falls within the printing area. The character size is further changed so that all the characters of the character string extending in all the lines fall within the printing area. An optimal character size is finally selected, and actual printing is performed on each label using this character size.

A coloring apparatus comprises a transfer head C having a heating element elastically protruding from an apparatus body 1, a tape accommodating portion B, and a tape feeding portion A having a winding up shaft 17, etc., which are incorporated within the apparatus body 1. A using method comprises, holding the apparatus body 1, pressing the transfer head C on the copied image of the xerographic copy, and heating by a heating element. Next, the apparatus body 1 is moved as the transfer head C is pressed onto the copied image, whereby the colored donor layer is peeled off from the transfer tape to stick the colored donor layer onto the copied image on the xerographic copy.

An image pickup device for viewing an image on a wall surface includes a mask for defining the extent of the focal plane of a viewed image which will be reproduced by a linear image sensor positioned to scan the masked area. Binary data representative of the scanned image is generated and controls a printer which reproduces the masked portion of the image. The size of the masked image is restored to the full size capability of the printer by a data scaling circuit which precludes the need for utilizing a zoom lens in the image pickup device.

An image signal processor is capable of precisely reading a dark-colored character or the like drawn on a light-colored background, such as a white board, and to perform binary encoding, but also capable of precisely reading a light-colored character or the like drawn on a dark-colored background, such as a blackboard, and to perform binary encoding. The image signal processor includes an automatic gain control circuit for receiving an image signal generated by an image pickup element and for changing to either a first cutoff frequency for performing automatic gain control on only a low-frequency component of the signal or a second cutoff frequency for performing automatic gain control on both the low-frequency component and a high-frequency component of the image signal. A binary encoding circuit receives an output signal generated as a result of the automatic gain control operation in the automatic gain control circuit and compares the output signal with a threshold potential level; to generate a binary signal when the threshold potential level is lower than the potential level of a frequency component of the output signal. A separate threshold potential level and frequency component is used when the different background modes are selected. A gate circuit which is operated in conjuction with the change of the cutoff frequency is used to select the binary signal from the binary encoding circuit corresponding to the selected background mode.

A serial dot matrix printer is provided with a slit encoder and an optical sensor opposed to the slit encoder. In the slit encoder, firing signal slits each having a fixed width are provided at a fixed pitch, and block signal slits each having a width smaller than that of each firing signal slit are provided in every block composed of a plurality of the firing signal slits. As a carriage moves, the optical sensor moves along the slit encoder to produce a signal at every slit. The signal from the optical sensor is applied to a first control device having a block detector and a firing timing unit. The block detector receives the signal from the optical sensor, measures the passing time between every slit, and detects a block signal according to a difference in passing time between the slits. The firing timing unit produces firing timing signals obtained by equally dividing the passing time of each of the firing signal slits by a predetermined number whenever the passing time of the each firing signal slit is measured. There is further provided a second control device having a carriage controller for controlling a carriage moving motor according to the block signal.

This film sag detecting device for a sound cinecamera is provided with an opto-electronic coupler located along a film path which is formed between a means for intermittent feeding of a film for exposure and a means for continuous feeding of the same for recording sounds thereon. The opto-electronic coupler comprises a light emitting element and a light receiving element and it is placed to allow the film to interrupt a light path which bridges the two light elements exclusively when the film excessively sags, so as to detect any excessive sag of the film.
