A cam locked air gap baffle assembly and method of installing same within a stator of a large, gas-cooled dynamoelectric machine utilizes a plurality of segmented baffles spaced by insulated tubes. Each baffle segment includes a wedge portion with a rotatable cam which serves to expand the wedge portion against the stator slot thereby locking it in place.

In a machine such as a turbine generator with a rotor whose end turns are covered by a continuous retaining ring, axial blocks and support blocks are used in an end turn bracing system with the axial block supported by the support blocks at intermediate locations and with openings through the axial blocks at those locations that have a greater axial extent than the support blocks and permit axial gas flow that avoids obstruction by the support blocks. The support blocks are provided of laminated material whose laminations run continuously throughout both major and minor legs of their L-shaped cross-sectional configuration to avoid delamination due to stresses encountered in operation.

In large dynamoelectric machines such as turbine generators, an air gap baffle assembly has eccentric rings to provide a differential thickness from top to bottom, so that before installation of an inner ring portion of the assembly, the rotor may be installed with greater clearance.

Improved cooling is provided for the end regions of the stator core of a large dynamoelectric machine. For this purpose, a solid rigid vent plate is placed in contact with the finger plate at each end of the core. The vent plates are non-magnetic plates of the same configuration as the core laminations and have radial grooves in at least one surface. Coolant gas flows through the grooves to directly cool the finger plate and the end laminations of the stator core.

A dynamoelectric machine utilizing stiff, multiple component phase leads for connecting potentially misaligned stator coils and parallel phase rings. The phase leads, when attached to stator coil and phase ring coolant headers, provide electrical communication therebetween. The first and second phase lead components have a hole and cylindrical portion respectively wherein the cylindrical portion is insertable in the hole. Such phase lead hole has a longitudinal axis perpendicular to both slot elongation directions. Intimate electrical contact between the phase lead components and their connected coolant headers is insured by disposidng solder between their mateable, plane surfaces. Intimate electrical contact between the phase lead components is insured by brazing the components together at the interface between the assembled cylindrical portion and hole. Translational misalignment between the connectable phase ring and coil is accommodated in the three perpendicular directions by providing the slotted openings and permitting insertion of the cylindrical phase lead portion into the phase lead hole for selected distances. Such selective insertion is obtained by supplying extra stock to the cylindrical phase lead portion and trimming that portion to the appropriate length at assembly time.

A liquid-cooled rotor is provided for large dynamoelectric machines, such as turbine generators, in which a coolant liquid such as water is supplied through a shaft bore and radial passages to an annular distribution chamber on the surface of the rotor. Water flows from the chamber to the rotor winding, and back to the chamber, through insulating hoses which are distributed about the circumference of the chamber, and coolant tubes are connected to the insulating hoses to carry the liquid to and from the rotor winding. The tubes are brought together in groups in a transition region from which they extend into slots in the surface of the rotor. The tubes are disposed in the transition region so as to minimize the space required and are supported against rotational forces in a manner to facilitate manufacture and repair. For this purpose, they are formed by bending to bring them into groups of the required number of tubes and are held in place on the rotor by masses of resin cast in place and subdivided so that individual groups of tubes can be removed and replaced independently of the other tubes.
