A self-authenticating document is created by providing a one-way hash value in a symbol creation process, and then using a public key to decrypt data of the self-authenticating document. Raw data to be provided with the self-authenticating document is received, and an account digital signature key is retrieved and used to sign the raw data. A non-repudiation hash value from a previously-created self-authenticating document is utilized, and the raw data and the digital signature key is combined with the hash value to create a new hash value for the self-authenticating document. The hashed data is then encrypted, and any non-encrypted fields are merged in to create a full data packet. The full data packet is used to provide a self-authenticating symbol, such as a bar code label, on the self-authenticating document. The self-authenticating code is used during a document verification step to ensure that the document is genuine. The non-encrypted data within the self-authenticating code contains flags indicating which public key should be used to decrypt the encrypted data within the self-authenticating code. After decryption, a checksum is performed and compared against a checksum value stored in the decrypted portion of the self-authenticating code. If they match, and if a digital signature within the self-authenticating code is verified using an appropriate public key, the document is determined to be authentic.

Self-authenticating negotiable documents

A method of monitoring a data transmission transmitted over a telephone line includes the first step of determining if a data transmission is incoming or outgoing over a telephone line. In the second method step, a modem is configured to monitor a receive portion of the telephone line if the first step determines that the transmission is outgoing. The modem is configured to monitor a transmit portion of the telephone line if the first step determines that the transmission is incoming. In the third method step, a data signal is detected from the data transmission. The method may include the further step of maintaining statistics corresponding to the data signal. The data transmission may be a facsimile transmission. The data signal may be any one of a DCS signal, an MCF signal, and an RTP signal.

Method of monitoring a data transmission

A fax network for communicating fax transmissions over either a conventional public switched telephone network or a digital (frame relay) network based on a telephone number of a destination fax machine. If the destination fax machine can be serviced by the digital network, a faxjack intercepts the phone digits on the telephone link, and redirects the call to a local point-of-presence, which is preferably located near the local exchange carrier. The POP receives information related to the desired fax transmission from the faxjack, and accesses a destination POP via the digital network. The destination POP is local with respect to the destination fax machine, and the destination POP attempts to contact the destination fax machine to ascertain if a fax session is allowable. If so, the destination POP notifies the source POP, which then notifies the faxjack, thereby allowing the fax session to start. The source POP packetizes the analog fax data received from the sending fax machine, and sends the fax data as packets over the digital network to the destination POP. The destination POP unpacketizes the data, and sends the fax data using a standard protocol and a standard local telephone link to the destination fax machine. Each of the POPs can be configured as a virtual POP to communicate with another data network using the virtual POP as a gateway.

Point of presence (POP) for digital facsimile network with virtual POPs

A system for transmitting data in real-time over a standard digital data network, or an analog network, whereby the facsimile data is sent in data packets on the digital data network. A number in an area being dialed by a facsimile device is monitored to determine whether the number is either a local number, inter-lata number, intra-lata number or a long distance number and whether the area is being serviced by the digital data network. Based on the determination, a first POP (point-of-presence) receives the facsimile transmission, converts the facsimile transmission to a rasterized form, and then converts the rasterized data into 'packets' of data, which are sent over the digital data network, one packet at a time, to a second POP. The second POP receives the packets over the digital data network, converts the packets to the rasterized form, and then reconverts the rasterized data using the G3 protocol, to be sent over the analog telephone network to the destination facsimile.

Apparatus and method for transmitting facsimile data

A facsimile jack selectively routes a facsimile transmission over a packet switched digital network including a source point of presence (source POP) which is local to a facsimile machine sending the facsimile transmission and a destination point of presence (destination POP) which is local to a facsimile machine receiving the facsimile transmission. The facsimile jack is connected between a facsimile machine and a telephone jack and includes a processor which determines if a destination number of the facsimile transmission is serviced by the facsimile network. If the destination number is long distance and is serviced by the facsimile network, the processor instructs a local number of the source POP to be dialed and the facsimile transmission to be sent through the source POP. If not, then other network route paths can be dialed (WATS, VPN, etc.). If a connection with other networks cannot be established either, then it dials the original number and connects the transmitting channel of the facsimile machine to the phone line. Even if the number is serviced by the network, a connection with the source POP may not be established an alternative routing paths selected if: the source POP is not operational and does not answer the incoming call; the source POP is saturated and cannot accept any additional incoming calls; the destination POP is saturated and cannot service any additional traffic; the destination POP is not operational; or the source POP or the facsimile network cannot respond with the proper initiation/training command sequence within a prescribed time-out period.

A method of routing a data transmission includes the first step of receiving a destination number of a data transmission. The destination number corresponds to a first communication network, e.g. voice grade analog telephone lines. In the second method step, a determination is made as to whether the data transmission should be routed through a second communication network, e.g. a digital network. In the third method step, the data transmission is routed through the second communication network if the second step so determines.
