A housing that includes a polymer, a reinforcing material, and a thermally conductive filler. A first housing component is defined by the polymer such that the reinforcing material and a thermally conductive filler are embedded within the polymer. The thermally conductive filler is configured such that heat can be passively conducted through the first housing component. The housing can be configured to be an aircraft gearbox housing.

Substantially cylindrical composite articles and fan casings

Process for producing a ceramic composite structure includes impregnating a reinforcing material with a suitable precursor slurry composition including thermosetting resin, a suitable curing agent, a ceramic component, a carbonaceous solids component, and optionally, a suitable solvent. Exemplary thermosetting resins include polyesters, vinyl esters, epoxy resins, bismaleimide resins, and polyimide resins. The carbonaceous solids component provides a suitable amount of carbon char upon pyrolization. The preform may be dried prior to curing to remove solvents and thereby provide a working material comprising up to 70 volume % solids. The preform is cured, pyrolized, and infiltrated with molten silicon to form a composite article. The thermosetting resin is selected for processibility, green strength, and relatively fast cure cycle.

A polyimide prepolymer blend including a first prepolymer component comprising a first polyimide oligomer having the formula E-[R]-Eand a second prepolymer component selected from M, a second polyimide oligomer having the formula E-[R]-E, and combinations thereof; where Rand Rindependently comprise: where n is from about 1 to about 5, V is a tetravalent substituted or unsubstituted aromatic monocyclic or polycyclic linking structure, R is a substituted or unsubstituted divalent organic radical. Eand Eindependently comprise crosslinkable functional groups. Mcomprises a mixture of monomeric compounds including a diamine component, a dianhydride component, and an end group component. The prepolymer blend, prior to cure, provides at least one predetermined prepolymer blend property; and when cured under suitable cure conditions, the prepolymer blend provides a crosslinked polyimide matrix having at least one predetermined crosslinked matrix property.

A composition includes a first cylcoolefin substituted with at least one epoxy group and an aromatic amine. The composition is capable of bonding to a filler having a corresponding binding site. The composition is compatible with a metathesis catalyst capable of catalyzing a ring-opening metathesis polymerization reaction when contacted with the first cycloolefin. An associated method is also provided.

A method for forming a polyimide composite article utilizes a polyimide resin system including at least a first prepolymer component and a second prepolymer component. A preform structure is tackified with the first prepolymer component. Using resin infusion or resin transfer molding techniques, the tackified preform structure is contacted with the second prepolymer component. The polyimide resin system is cured under suitable cure conditions so that the first and second prepolymer components mix and react to produce the polyimide composite structure.

Methods for forming composite articles from tailorable polyimide resin systems using RTM and RI techniques

Tailorable polyimide resin systems suitable for processing by resin transfer molding (RTM) and resin infusion (RI) methods. An exemplary resin system includes first and second prepolymer components present in respective amounts to provide the desired processibility. The cured polyimide system exhibits high glass transition temperature and other properties required for gas turbine engine applications. The first and second prepolymer components independently comprise a monomeric mixture or a reaction product of a diamine component, a dianhydride component, and an end group component.

RTM and RI processible tailorable polyimide resin systems and composite articles formed therefrom

Methods for making components having improved erosion resistance including providing a component having a surface, applying at least one layer of an erosion system to at least a portion of the surface of the component, each layer of the erosion system containing a support, and a toughened resin applied to the support, and co-molding the component having the applied erosion system to produce a coated component having from about a 50% increase to about a 400% increase in erosion resistance per layer of the erosion system.

A tailorable polyimide prepolymer blend comprising an end group component, a dianhydride component, and a diamine component. The dianhydride component includes at least 3,4,3',4&#x2032;-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), derivatives thereof, or combinations thereof, and 3,4,3&#x2032;,4&#x2032;-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), derivatives thereof, or combinations thereof. The diamine component includes at least 1,3-phenylenediamine (mPDA), derivatives thereof, or combinations thereof; 1,4-phenylenediamine (pPDA), derivatives thereof, or combinations thereof; bis amino phenoxy benzene (APB), derivatives thereof, and combinations thereof; and optionally, 4,4&#x2032;-(1,3-phenylene-bis(1-methylethylidene)bisaniline (Bis-M), derivatives thereof, and combinations thereof. A cured polyimide matrix has a glass transition temperature of at least about 450&#xb0; F. (232&#xb0; C.). An article formed from the tailorable polyimide prepolymer blend may be a powder, a neat resin, a coating material, a film, an adhesive, a fiber, a composite, a laminate, a prepreg, a part, and combinations thereof.

An article includes a reaction product of a filler having binding sites, a coupling agent composition including an aromatic amine and a first cycloolefin substituted with at least one epoxy group, a polymer precursor including a second cycloolefin, and a metathesis catalyst capable of catalyzing a ring-opening metathesis polymerization reaction when contacted to the first cycloolefin or the second cycloolefin. The coupling agent composition is capable of bonding to the filler and the coupling agent composition is compatible with a metathesis catalyst. An associated method is also provided.

A composition includes a coupling agent composition and a polymer precursor. The coupling agent composition includes an aromatic amine and a first cycloolefin substituted with at least one epoxy group. The polymer precursor includes a second cycloolefin and an epoxy compound. The coupling agent composition is capable of bonding to a filler having a corresponding binding site and the coupling agent composition is compatible with a metathesis catalyst capable of catalyzing a ring-opening metathesis polymerization reaction when contacted to the first cycloolefin or the second cycloolefin. A method for fabricating a reinforced matrix composite comprising the step of providing a composite preform having a fibrous structure and applying matrix material onto the preform in locations along the preform. A barrier material is applied to at least a portion of the coated preform to direct the flow of matrix material into the preform. The composite preform is heated to a temperature sufficient to render the matrix material viscous and insufficient to cure the matrix material. The pressure to the interior of the composite preform is reduced, while the pressure to the barrier material is increased. The temperature is maintained to flow the matrix material into the composite preform and to force gases from the fibrous structure. The composite preform is then cured and cooled to form a reinforced matrix composite having a low void content and a substantially uniform matrix distribution.
