A filter for mimicking regional lung deposition is provided that includes filter layers of fibrous filter material stacked coaxially and an outer ring portion encircling the fibrous filter material and securing the filter layers together. The fibrous filter material is formed for fibers having a fiber diameter, and the filter has a tunable filter efficiency. A regional lung deposition system capable of measuring constant flow or variable flow is provided that includes a throat simulation device, a filter housing downstream of and in fluid communication with the throat simulation device, a breath simulator downstream of and in fluid communication with the filter housing, and a an above-referenced filter positioned within the filter housing. Also provided is a filter housing for use in the regional lung deposition system that includes a conical housing having a small inner diameter at a first end and a large inner diameter at a second end.

Filters for mimicking regional lung deposition

A respirable composition for treatment of a bacterial infection includes one or more active bacteriophages in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable respirable carrier. The composition includes a carbohydrate carrier, and is prepared as fine powder. In another aspect, bacteriophages are provided in a liquid carrier for administration by nebulization. In one aspect, the bacteriophages have anti-bacterial activity against one or more species or strains ofcomplex (BCC) bacteria. The invention further relates to the use of a BCC bacteriophage to treat a BCC infection, in particular in an individual suffering from cystic fibrosis.

Bacteriophage compositions for treatment of bacterial infections

A method of manufacturing heat-sensitive pharmaceutical powder is disclosed. The original pharmaceutical substances are dissolved in a solution or suspended in a suspension, which is sprayed through an atomizing nozzle and frozen in a cold gas phase or liquid nitrogen atomized directly in the spray-freeze chamber or gas jacket at the same time (for cooling purposes). The particles are freeze-dried at roughly atmospheric pressure in a down-stream fluid flow with exit filter thereby to remove moisture entrapped on or inside the frozen particles. The system has applicability for forming other powders.

Powder formation by atmospheric spray-freeze drying

Effervescent powders comprising inhalable particles are disclosed, as are methods for preparing these powders. The inhalable carrier particles comprise an inorganic or organic carbonate, and an acid, and exhibit effervescence when exposed to water or humid air. The particles have a mass median aerodynamic diameter suitable for nasal, bronchial, or pulmonary administration. The inhalable particles may be used as carriers for active agents. The inhalable particles may also be used to enhance permeability of mucosal and surface barriers on an inner surface of the nose, mouth, airway, and/or lungs of a patient, as well as to loosen, thin, cleanse, and remove mucus and extrinsic surface materials from an inner surface of the nose, mouth, airway, and/or lungs of a patient in need thereof.
