The present invention provides a method and apparatus for forming a sheet of ductile material by superplastic forming. The gas pressure is varied to control the material flow during the forming process. Accordingly, the gas pressure can be increased or decreased to control the rate of deformation of the workpiece. Accordingly, the method and apparatus contemplates the use of predetermined pressure profiles to reduce the overall forming time.

Pressure controlled superplastic forming

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for forming a ductile sheet or work piece into a part or component. The method includes using a forming apparatus wherein the workpiece is placed between and upper die and a blank holder and then lowered onto a punch such that continued lowering of the upper die draws the workpiece around the punch. Once the draw process is complete, gas pressure acts on one side of the workpiece to press the workpiece against a forming surface of the punch to complete the forming process.

Method and apparatus for superplastic forming

A superplastic forming tool for forming a workpiece to make a part. The forming tool includes a forming die having first and second die members. At least one of the die members having a cavity including a forming surface and a plenum. A plurality of passageways extend between the plenum and the cavity. The passageways allow passage of fluid between the cavity and the plenum.

Superplastic forming tool

A system and method for superplastic forming a workpiece. The system includes a superplastic forming cell formed of a plurality of individual stations or modules, each one performing a specific manufacturing step or process on the workpiece. Individual stations include a preheat station, a forming station, a cooling station, a cleaning station and a trimming station. These stations work in conjunction with one another to reduce superplastic forming cycle times and correspondingly increased production times when manufacturing a workpiece using a superplastic forming process.

An apparatus and method for removing a part from a forming tool and supporting the part. The apparatus includes a support member having a surface contoured to conform to a formed shape of the part and an aperture disposed in the surface. A manipulator moves the support member near the part while the part contacts the forming tool. Pressurized gas is directed toward the part to cause the release of the part from the forming tool and to cool the part. The surface supports the part to inhibit distortion as the part cools.

Apparatus and method for removing and cooling a part from a forming tool

A super-plastic forming tool for forming aluminum sheets is provided that includes a seal bead that is configured to facilitate removal of the aluminum sheet from the seal bead after a super-plastic forming operation. Contraction of the aluminum sheet at a faster rate than the super-plastic forming tool facilitates removal of the aluminum sheet due to the specific geometry of the seal bead. The seal bead has a more shallowly sloped outer surface than its inner surface and may be provided in different configurations including flat, convex, concave shapes.

Sealing system for super-plastic gas-pressure forming of aluminum sheets

An apparatus and a method for forming an article and performing a secondary operation on the article in-situ. The apparatus includes a closure and a die having a cavity. A source of pressurized gas forces a portion of a sheet into contact with a forming surface having a predetermined shape. A tool is movably connected to the apparatus and is configured to engage the sheet to perform a secondary operation while the sheet is held in compression between the closure and the die.

Apparatus and method for forming an article and performing a secondary operation in-situ

A method of making sand cores to obtain optimum mechanical properties and particularly to obtain accurate adjustment of the gas curing cycle for making optimum resin-coated sand cores. The method comprises blowing, into a core box cavity, mixture of core making particulated sand and gas curable liquid resin having a first level of pH, such mixture containing a uniform distribution of a pH indicating dye additive that changes color in response to a change in pH level, in contact therewith, such blowing being continued to fill the cavity to a desired density and form an uncured sand core shape with a predetermined porosity, (b) introducing a catalyst gas having a second level of pH, through the pores of the core shape to cure the resin and contact the dye additive, (c) concurrently, or subsequent to step (b), sensing the degree of color change of any part of the core shape that is or has taken place as a result of exposure to the flow front of the catalyst gas, and (d) responding to such color sensing to modify the parameters of catalyst gas introduction (i.e. exposure time, gas pressure, gas concentration or gas inlet/out location) to ensure the desired degree of catalyst reaction in the desired time period.

Method of making gas curable resin-coated sand cores

A closed core box is provided with one or more inlets for receiving and passing gas fluidized resin-coated sand to fill the interior of such core box, and with one or more screened outlets for allowing egress of such gas. A closed cylindrical or angular sand-fluidizing chamber is provided for each of the inlets, the chamber having one end connectable to a pressurized gas supply and an opposite end communicating with an inlet. At least part of each chamber is filled with resin-coated sand and a non-porous piston is placed on the sand within each chamber, each piston providing an annular gap (i.e. about 1/16 of an inch) with the interior of such chamber to direct the gas supply along the periphery of the chamber interior. The pressurized gas supply (40-80 psi) is connected to the chamber above the pistons whereby gas will move past each of the pistons to fluidize the sand therebelow in the chamber in a manner that continuously and toroidally recirculates the sand away from the periphery of the chamber while communicating with an inlet to the core box to promote smooth fluidized flow through such inlet, the piston moving down with the top level of the sand in the chamber as sand moves through the inlets.
