In a linear position encoder, a support is provided upon which a pair of phase quadrature windings are mounted. The windings are arranged to have a sinusoidal magnetic sensitivity characteristic along the length of the support. Mounted on a movable element there is a resonant circuit including a coil and capacitor that can magnetically couple with the windings. When the circuit is excited, it induces currents in the windings that are dependent upon the position of the circuit within a period Tof the windings. An excitation and processing unit is provided to energize the circuit and to process the signals induced in the windings. The excitation and processing unit is operably coupled to an external high permeability rod extending along the measurement path in a first plane having the windings but removed therefrom. The rod has first and second excitation coils connected in series and wound around the rod and disposed at opposite ends defining a length of the rod.

Linear position sensor

An optical torque sensor comprises a radiation source emitting radiation of at least one wavelength. At least one sensor senses the emitted radiation and generates at least one intensity signal indicative of the intensity of the emitted radiation. At least one signal conditioner is receptive of the emitted radiation and is positioned on a shaft between the radiation source and the at least one sensor thereby conditioning the emitted radiation. A circuit is receptive of the at least one intensity signal and determines the torque acting upon the shaft and compensates for the attenuation of the emitted radiation.

Method and apparatus for correcting attenuation in an optical torque sensor

A method and apparatus for detecting the concentration of soot particles in engine oil. A microwave signal having a varying frequency is applied to a transmission line having a probe tip exposed to the engine oil. A voltage is read at a stationary detection point along the length of the transmission line for each applied frequency. The applied frequency when the probe voltage is equal to a null voltage of a standing wave within the transmission line is compared to a reference frequency determined when the probe voltage is equal to a null voltage for a known concentration of soot particles. The concentration is calculated based upon the result of the comparison. Preferably, a reference probe receives the same input signal. A known relationship between the reference probe and the transmission line is then used to eliminate temperature effects on the applied frequency.

Soot detector for engine oil

Circuit and method for coupling signals to a tire pressure monitoring system assembled within the interior of a tire in the absence of a receiver are provided. The circuit comprises a coupling circuit that provides capacitance or electromagnetic coupling to pass an externally-derived stream of pulses to a microprocessor therein by either, in the case of capacitance coupling, connecting an external device that generates the stream of externally-derived of pulses to a valve stem of the tire and an electrical ground. In the case of electromagnetic coupling, by placing a suitable external device proximate the coupling circuit. The stream of pulses carries information usable by the microprocessor to perform a respective operational function.

Circuits for coupling signals carrying information to a tire pressure monitoring system in the absence of a receiver

A sensor assembly for sensing angular position of one object relative to another object. A capacitor is formed between a transmitter capacitor plate having a pair of transmitter electrodes and a receiver capacitor plate having preferably eight receiver electrodes forming four receiver electrode pairs. A dielectric rotor rotates between the plates, the rotor having first and second segments each subtending 67.5 which are mutually separated by a vacancy subtending 45 degrees, and further having a third segment subtending 45 degrees disposed between the first and second segments diametrically opposite the vacancy. An electrical circuit measures net charge induced on each of the receiver electrode pairs, wherein the charges indicate the angular position of said rotor relative to said transmitter and receiver capacitor plates.

Capacitive angular position sensor

Soot content in Diesel engine lubrication oil is determined using electrical resistance measurements of the oil at high frequency. A sensor in the form of a capacitor is immersed in the oil, wherein the oil serves as a dielectric between the plates. The capacitance and resistance between the plates change as a function of engine oil condition. An inductor is placed in series with the sensor, and high frequencies are sweeped over a range to find resonance where the capacitive and inductive reactances cancel. At this frequency, the resistance of the oil is measured and the condition of the oil thereby determined.

Method for measuring high frequency resistance in diesel engine lubrication oil

A magnetically variable differential transformer, comprising: a primary winding; a first secondary winding; a second secondary winding; a non-movable permeable core disposed within the primary winding, the first secondary winding and the second secondary winding; and a movable magnet configured for movement about the primary winding, the first secondary winding and the second secondary winding, wherein movement of the movable magnet causes magnetic saturation of portions of the non-movable permeable core.

Non-contact magnetically variable differential transformer

A method and apparatus for detecting an accumulation of particles with a medium such as the soot content in diesel engine oil including generating a first waveform at a first frequency and a first voltage level to produce a standing wave having a voltage null point where at least a portion of the standing wave is passed within a portion of the oil. Generating a second waveform at a second frequency and a second voltage level to place a signal associated with a second voltage null point at a detection location for determining the signal's null point voltage level. The percentage soot content of the oil may be determined by taking the ratio of the difference between the first voltage and the second voltage over the null point voltage at the detection point. This ratio is indicative of the percentage soot content. The first and second waveforms may be produced by a variable frequency microwave source that is coupled with a coaxial cable have a probe affixed to its distal end for immersion in the oil. The probe may include a plurality of parallel wires affixed to the cable at one end with a conductive shorting plate at the other end. A processor may be configured for controlling the circuit of the apparatus and calculating the percentage soot content.

Apparatus and method for sensing particle accumulation in a medium

A sensor for sensing the angular position of a rotatable body including a stationary transmitter plate with at least one transmitter electrode, a stationary receiver plate with at least a first and a second receiver electrode, and a rotor formed of a dielectric material and positioned between the facing electrodes of the plates. The rotor is smaller than the plates and rotates with the rotatable body to change the capacitance between the transmitter electrode(s) and opposed receiver electrodes. The induced voltages on the receiver electrodes indicate the angular position of the rotatable body. Preferably, the sensor uses a square waveform signal and two transmitter electrodes receive signals 180 degrees out of phase. Then, four receiver electrodes forming two receiver pairs are connected so that the current flowing between each pair is measured and converted to a voltage. A lookup table compares the values of the voltage pairs to known values from calibration, giving the angular position.

A linear output and non-contacting angular position sensor has a rotatable arc segment magnet arranged to rotate about the stationary components of the sensor, which include a pair of stationary flux concentrators, separated by a Hall probe; or, the magnet may be arranged to rotate at the center of the sensor with the stationary components fixed outside the magnet. With either arrangement, the Hall probe produces a direct 0 to 5 V d.c. output which varies linearly with the rotational angle of the magnet as the magnet rotates through a predetermined angle. The predetermined angle of rotation is generally equal to the arc formed by the flux concentrators and the arc of the magnet is generally 20-40% greater than the arc of the flux concentrators.

Linear output non-contacting angular position sensor

A method for compensating the output of an angular position sensor assembly includes placing a first magnetic field sensor such that it is oriented ninety degrees from a second magnetic field sensor. A magnet is placed so that it is equidistant from the sensors. The magnet is rotated, and as it rotates, the signals output by the sensors are sinusoidal waves that are out of phase with each other by ninety degrees (90&deg;). Accordingly, the signals can be squared and summed to determined a temperature compensation signal.

Method for temperature compensation for the output of an angular position sensor

An angular position sensor includes a rotor attached to a shaft. A first magnet and a second magnet are attached to the surface of the rotor. Moreover, a first concentrator and a second concentrator are disposed around the perimeter of the rotor opposite each other. A space is established between the first concentrator and second concentrator, and a magnetic field sensing element is disposed in the space. As the rotor rotates with respect to the sensing element, the sensing element outputs a linear signal representing the location of the rotor with respect to the sensing element over a range between negative ninety degrees and positive ninety degrees.

A method and device for determining the absolute angular position of a rotating body includes an input gear attached to a rotating body and meshed with a single output gear. The gear ratio between the input gear and the output gear is a non-integer, so that the output gear will be out of phase with the input gear as the input gear completes successive revolutions. A sensor is placed in close proximity to the output gear and provides a signal to a microprocessor representing the angular position of the output gear. This signal is used by the microprocessor to calculate the absolute angular position of the input gear and thus, the absolute position of the attached rotating body.

Method and device for determining absolute angular position of a rotating body

A steering column differential angle position sensor includes an upper target wheel and a lower target wheel. Each target wheel forms a plurality of similarly shaped slots that are equally spaced radially around the target wheels. Two receiver coils and a excitation coil are coaxially aligned with the target wheels. A hollow housing surrounds the target wheels and the coils. The excitation coil generates an alternating current magnetic field around itself, and this alternating current magnetic field generates eddy current in the target wheels. The receiver coils receive an alternating current signal that is a combination of the alternating current magnetic field generated by the excitation coil and the eddy current. The receiver coils sense changes in the alternating current signal due to differential slot alignment of the target wheels, and hence, the torque on a steering column that is mechanically coupled to the sensor.

Steering column differential angle position sensor

A ferromagnetic particle sensor includes a housing having a first electromagnet and a second electromagnet attached to the interior surface thereof. A mass sensitive surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor is disposed between the electromagnets. The sensor is submerged in lubricating fluid and as the electromagnets are energized they produce magnetic forces that draw fluid-borne ferromagnetic particles past the SAW sensor. The SAW sensor is used measure the mass of the ferromagnetic particles and determine when the volume of particles in the lubricating fluid increases.
