The present invention relates to a composition comprising an amphoteric polymer having pendant acid groups, or salts thereof, and pendant mono- or dialkylamino ethylene oxide groups or alkylammonium ethylene oxide groups characterized by either of the following formulas: where R-Rand Xare as defined herein. The composition of the present invention improves hiding efficiency for coating compositions formulated using associative rheology modifiers, binders, and titanium dioxide.

Amphoteric polymer composition

The present invention relates to a stable aqueous dispersion of multiphase amphoteric polymer particles comprising a crosslinked polymer phase comprising structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer, a carboxylic acid monomer, a multiethylenically unsaturated monomer, and an ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer; and a second polymer phase comprising a carboxylic acid monomer and an ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer. The present invention also relates to composites of the particles and pigment particles such as TiO. The composition is useful for preparing dried coatings with improved hiding.

Amphoteric polymer particles and compositions thereof

An opacifying pigment encapsulated in polymer including a pigment particle having an average particle diameter of from 0.005 to 5 microns and an index of refraction of at least 1.8; an aminophosphorus acid-functional first polymer having been used to disperse the pigment particle in an aqueous medium; and a second polymer that at least partially encapsulates the dispersed pigment particle is provided. A process for forming the opacifying pigment encapsulated in polymer and compositions including the particles are also provided.

Opacifying pigment particle

The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of xanthan gum and opacifying pigment particles such as TiOencapsulated with a vinyl ester polymer or a vinyl ester-acrylate copolymer, as well as a method for its preparation. The composition is useful in coatings formulations, especially paint formulations.

Binder thickened with xanthan gum

A coating containing pigment particles and a polymer matrix is provided. The coating contains pigment particles that have a scattering coefficient with a linear or quasi-linear relationship to the pigment volume concentration of those pigment particles. The coating has improved hiding and is useful as a protective coating or an aesthetic coating on an underlying substrate. Also provided are compositions useful for preparing the coating, including covalently bonded composite particles and aqueous dispersions containing composite particles. The composite particles each contain a pigment particle with a plurality of polymer particles attached by adsorption on the outer surface of the pigment particle or by covalent bonding to the pigment particle through a coupling agent. Methods to prepare the composite particles and coating compositions containing the composite particles are also provided.

Coating with improved hiding compositions prepared therewith, and processes for the preparation thereof

An aqueous dispersion of polymeric particles and process for making the aqueous dispersion are disclosed. The polymeric particles have at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a copolymerized macromer with a number average molecular weight of between 1,000 and 50,000 and a cloud point in water of between 25&#xb0; C. and 90&#xb0; C.

Composite particles

An opacifying particle including a certain pigment particle at least partially encapsulated in a polymeric shell having a calculated thickness of from 35 nm to 200 nm, the polymeric shell including at least a first polymer phase and a second polymer phase, wherein the first polymer is substantially in contact with the surface of the pigment particle providing a calculated shell thickness of at least 25 nm and wherein the first polymer has a refractive index of at least 0.03 units less than that of the second polymer is provided. Further provided is a composition including certain pigment particles at least partially encapsulated in a shell of a first polymer having a calculated thickness of from 25 nm to 200 nm, and the encapsulated pigment particles in contact with a second polymer, wherein the first polymer has a refractive index of at least 0.03 units less than that of the second polymer.

Opacifying particles and compositions formed therefrom

A process for forming an opacifying pigment encapsulated in polymer including (a) dispersing a pigment particle having an average particle diameter of from 150 to 500 nm and an index of refraction of at least 1.8 such as, for example, TiO2 in a medium with from 0.1% to 10% by weight, based on the weight of said pigment particle, sulfur acid-functional first polymer whereby the zeta potential of the dispersed pigment particle is less than &#x2212;28 mV between pH 5 and pH 8; and (b) performing an emulsion polymerization in the presence of the dispersed pigment particle to provide from 10% to 200%, by weight, based on the weight of the pigment particle, second polymer that at least partially encapsulates the dispersed pigment particle. Also provided are the encapsulated pigment particle so formed and compositions including the encapsulated pigment particle.

An opacifying pigment that includes a pigment particle having an average particle diameter of from 0.005 to 5 microns and an index of refraction of at least 1.8 such as, for example TiO2, at least partially encapsulated in polymer is provided. Also provided are processes for forming the encapsulated pigment particle and compositions including the encapsulated pigment particle.

An opacifying particle including a pigment particle having an average particle diameter of from 0.005 to 5 microns and an index of refraction of at least 1.8; a first polymer attached to the surface of the pigment particle via a silane residue; and a second polymer which substantially encapsulates the pigment particle having the attached first polymer is provided. Also provided is a method for forming the opacifying particle as is a coating composition and a plastic composition including the opacifying particle.

Opacifying particles

A pigmented polymer composition containing colorant particles and polymer particles having phosphorus acid groups is provided. The polymer particles are prepared from the low pH polymerization of phosphorus acid monomer, or alternatively, are substantially free of water soluble polymer bearing phosphorus acid groups. A method for preparing colored coatings from the pigmented polymer composition is also provided. Colored coatings have improved color properties.

Pigmented polymer composition

An aqueous polymer composition is provided containing select levels of hard polymer and soft polymer, wherein the hard polymer and the soft polymer are contained as dispersed particles. Portions of the hard polymer and optionally, the soft polymer, have select chemical groups. The aqueous polymer composition also contains composite particles formed from pigment particles and a plurality of polymer particles having the select chemical groups. The aqueous polymer composition is useful for preparing coatings having a combination of improved hiding, low temperature film formation, and hardness properties, such as dirt pickup resistance. Methods to prepare and to use the aqueous polymer composition are also provided.

Aqueous polymer composition

Polymer particles having select functional or absorbing groups are provided. The polymer particles are useful for preparing organic-inorganic composite particles that are suitable for providing dried coatings with improved hiding. Aqueous compositions containing these composite particles are also provided. The select absorbing groups include phosphorus acid groups, phosphorus acid full-ester groups, polyacid sidechain groups, and salts thereof. The select functional groups are capable of forming covalently bonded composite particles. The composite particles formed from the multistage polymer particles having the select functional or absorbing groups are useful for preparing dried coatings with a combination of improved hiding, increased gloss, and good film properties.
