In a valveless percussive drill of the hydraulic type and incorporating a hammer assembly, an 'intermediate' shoulder between the head portion and cushion portion of a reciprocating piston engages the end face of a distributor or liner, rather than an interior bearing structure for the piston. This end face can be made harder than the ulterior bearing structure, which may include a surface made of a different material than the piston. Collectively, the result is a percussive drill with the hammer assembly incorporating the piston substantially less susceptible to failure due to galling as the result of contamination in the working fluid.

Fail-resistant hammer assembly for a valveless percussive drill

Apparatus and methods are provided for assisting in mounting a wear pad to a drilling machine. A gib is split longitudinally into at least first and second portions creating a channel for receiving the wear pad. A portion of the wear pad may include a tenon, such as a dovetail, corresponding to the channel, or mortise. A fastener may be used to fasten the first and second portions of the gib together. In this configuration, the wear pad may be removed in a longitudinal direction or otherwise by separating the first and second portions of the gib.

Split gib mounting arrangement for drilling components

A rock bolter has a turret assembly having a positionable base. The base slidably and rotatably engages a cylindrical member on which a feed track support is affixed. A jack rotatably and slidably engages the cylindrical member, but cannot translate with respect to the base. The jack has a piston connected to the feed track support, and extending or retracting the piston translates the cylindrical member relative to the base to move the feed track support toward and away from a rock surface. A stinger assembly connected to the base engages the rock surface to stabilize the turret assembly. A pivot actuator connected between the base and the jack rotates the jack and the feed track support to selectively place either a drill or a bolt driver in alignment with a desired location on the rock surface.

Translating turret rock bolter

A rock bolter has a drill and a bolt driver, both mounted to a turret that rotates relative to a base to align either the drill or the bolt driver with a work axis. A stinger/centralizer has two head elements, each advanced along a curvilinear path. When advanced, the head elements mate to provide a centralizer passage on the work axis. A supplementary stinger affixed to the base extends to engage the rock surface and provide stability as the head elements are retracted. The drill and the bolt driver are mounted on carriages activated by a common mechanism. A drill carriage disabling surface is affixed to the base to block the drill carriage when the drill is off the work axis, and a bolt driver carriage disabling surface is affixed to the base to block the bolt driver carriage when the bolt driver is off the work axis.

Turret rock bolter with stinger/centralizer

The present invention provides a bolt delivery system having a bolt magazine movably attached to a magazine base which in turn is affixed to a rock bolter having a bolt driver. The bolt magazine moves between a work position and a park position. In its work position, a linear incremental bolt advancing mechanism advances the bolts to where they are aligned with the bolt driver, and, in combination with a bolt-embracing arm, maintains the aligned bolt until it is engaged by the bolt driver. After the bolt driver has engaged the bolt and advanced it to engage a bolt centralizer provided to position the bolt in a pre-drilled hole in a rock surface, the bolt magazine is moved to its park position. At which time, the bolt driver is further advanced driving the bolt into the pre-drilled hole. The linear incremental bolt advancing mechanism preferably has a lower and an upper bolt advancing mechanism, and more preferably, provides the bolts a component of motion toward the rock surface. Preferably, the bolt delivery system also delivers bolt plates.

A tool base securing system for a rock bolter. One aspect of the invention provides a securing system for the tool base which is being advanced on a cradle along a feed shell. This system includes a forward latch which is pivotably attached to the forward section of the cradle base and has a tool base engaging lug. A mechanical linkage is provided to engage and disengage the front lug from the tool base as the cradle is advanced from and returned to a park position on the feed shell. In a preferred embodiment a rear latch is also provided which has a mechanical linkage for engaging and disengaging a rear lug. A second aspect of the invention provides a securing system which provides a mechanical interlock which immobilizes all tool bases which are off the cradle when the cradle is being advanced.

Tool base securing system

The present invention relates to a device for setting rock bolts. The device employs a common element for affixing the end of a feed shell with respect to a rock surface, stabilizing the feed shell and providing a common centralizer for centering all subsequent bolt setting operations. The device also has a bolt delivery system which stores, advances and positions the bolts in line with a bolt driver. The bolt delivery system has a bolt magazine which, when in a work position, advances bolts along peripheral surfaces into a position where they are engaged by a bolt driver. The bolt so engaged is then advanced into the centralizer at which point the bolt magazine is rotated away from the engaged bolt to a park position where it will not interfere with the bolt driver as it continues to advance the bolt. The bolt magazine preferably also serves as a bolt plate magazine which accommodates bolt plates with which the bolts are engaged. The bolt plates are stabilized by a bolt plate channel having an opening through which the bolt plates can exit the magazine.

Bolt delivery system

The present invention relates to a device for setting rock bolts. The device employs a common element for affixing the end of a feed shell with respect to a rock surface, stabilizing the feed shell and providing a common centralizer for centering all subsequent bolt setting operations. The device also has a bolt magazine which stores, advances and positions the bolts in line with a bolt driver.

Rock bolter

The present invention relates to a system and a method which employs gas to position a resin sausage into a bolt hole drilled by a rock bolter. The system provides a controlled quantity of liquid into a resin sausage insertion chamber prior to supplying the gas to eject the sausage from the resin sausage insertion chamber. The liquid enhances the reliability and accuracy of the placement of the sausages in the bolt hole. Preferably, the system includes an expansion chamber through which the gas passes. The expansion chamber is provided so that the gas can be partially displaced by liquid and thereafter, liquid will be advanced into the resin sausage insertion chamber prior to the gas. The system can either have its own fluid supply or alternatively use a fluid supply of the rock bolter if one is provided for flushing the bolt holes. In either case, it is preferred that the expansion chamber is adjustable so as to allow the volume of liquid and gas to be adjusted for the operating conditions of the rock bolter.

Resin injector system

The present invention is for an improved feed shell for an air-flushing, rock-drilling system. The improvement extends the life of the feed shell and, in particular, the feed guide of a feed shell on which gibs for directing a rock drill ride. The system, as improved, provides a first nozzle which directs fluid onto a first guide surface of the feed guide and second nozzle which directs fluid onto a second guide surface of the feed guide. The nozzles can be mounted in either manifolds or, alternatively, in the gibs which support and guide the drill on the feed guide.

Feed shell lubrication manifold

A pneumatic rock drill which has a pneumatic percussion unit with a piston which slidably engages the cylinder in which it reciprocates. Preferably clearances of less than less than about 0.00125 inches per inch of piston diameter and greater than about 0.00075 inches where clearances are diameter are maintained to assure a fluid film between the piston and the cylinder wall. The clearances are based on diameters. The piston of the pneumatic drill has at least one stem section which slidably engages a distributor. The rock drill has a pneumatic motor connected to the percussion unit and engages a distributor of the percussion unit. A air motor gear in the pneumatic motor is rotatably mounted on the distributor. The exhaust is employed to lubricate the bearings and gearing which turn the striker bar.

Pneumatic drill

A pneumatic rock drill which has a pneumatic percussion unit with a piston which slidably engages the cylinder in which it reciprocates. Preferably clearances of less than less than about 0.00125 inches per inch of piston diameter and greater than about 0.00075 inches where clearances are diameter are maintained to assure a fluid film between the piston and the cylinder wall. The clearances are based on diameters. The piston of the pneumatic drill has at least one stem section which slidably engages a distributor. The rock drill has a pneumatic motor connected to the percussion unit and engages a distributor of the percussion unit. An air motor gear in the pneumatic motor is rotatably mounted on the distributor. The exhaust is employed to lubricate the bearings and gearing which turn the striker bar.

Hammer

An apparatus for bolting the roof of an underground mine is disclosed comprising a mobile frame, a boom extending from the frame and a housing provided at the end of the frame. The housing supports an upwardly extending stinger, a drilling mechanism including a drill centralizer having a central bore therethrough and a passageway in communication with the central bore, a device for delivering a container of roof bolting anchoring media through the passageway and through the drill centralizer and into a drilled hole, a device for indexing a roof bolt into alignment with the drilled hole and a spinner for driving the roof bolt into the drilled hole. The present invention also provides a method for bolting the roof of an underground mine comprising the steps of stinging a housing against the roof of the mine, moving a drill centralizer into communication with the roof and drilling a hole in the roof. Without retracting the drill centralizer from communication with the roof, a container of roof bolt anchoring media is delivered through the centralizer and into the drilled hole. The drill centralizer is thereafter retracted and the housing is moved to align a roof bolt with a drilled hole. Then the roof bolt is driven into the drilled hole and the bolt anchoring media sets around the bolt.

Mine roof driller-bolter apparatus and method

A method and apparatus for maintaining alignment of the drill steel or drill rod of a drilling machine in which a midpoint centralizer or indicator ring having an aperture therethrough substantially greater than the diameter of the drill rod or drill steel is used like a rifle sight to indicate the nature and degree of misalignment so that adjustments can be made in the operating mechanisms of the drilling machine or the support and positioning mechanisms for the drilling machine to remove the cause of the misalignment and to return the drill steel to its centered, aligned position in the indicator ring. In normal operation the drill steel does not contact the indicator ring so that noise transmission and frictional losses normally associated with midpoint centralizers is avoided. Mechanical contact between the drill steel and indicator ring occurs only to limit the maximum deflection and maximum stress which will occur in the drill steel due to bending. Guided by the indications at the indicator ring a skilled operator can greatly reduce or substantially avoid the occasions when mechanical contact actually occurs.
