An accurate and inexpensive integral micro-optical system for coupling and aligning optical fibers with other optical components, such as other optical fibers, diffusers, beam shapers, beam splitters, mirrors, or lenses is disclosed. The micro-optical coupler disclosed comprises one or more fiberport collimators and one or more microlens arrays, optically aligned during fabrication so that an optical fiber, or other source of light, was coupled to another optical fiber, or other light receiver, by simple inserting the optical source in one side of the micro-coupler and inserting the optical receiver in the other side of the micro-coupler. Often the fabrication process for this system can be done in a single lithography procedure. Since the optical axis of each component was aligned during the fabrication step, no subsequent alignment was required.

Integral pre-aligned micro-optical systems

An inexpensive device and method of fabricating microlenses able to be pre-aligned with other optical components (e.g., mirrors, splitters, and prisms, cylindrical lenses, plano-plates and prisms) fabricated on the same substrate to form an integrated optical platform. This integrated optical platform enhances optical systems by reducing coupling losses, cross-talking, and dispersion, and allowing for the simultaneous optical focusing of one or more light beams in a true, three-dimensional arrangement. The novel device comprises an optical lens having an out-of-plane orientated, optical axis (i.e., the optical axial is parallel to the substrate on which the optical bench system is located) with a quasi-parabolic surface.

Out-of-plane pre-aligned refractive micro lens

A power switching device is disclosed that achieves a complete, mechanical &ldquo;on&rdquo; and &ldquo;off&rdquo; electrical circuit. The device is a rapid micro-relay that comprises two separate systems: a control driving signal system and a voltage delivery system. Its electrostatic actuator and switching connectors are electrically separated, inhibiting interference between the two systems. The micro-relay can optionally be adapted to support multiple voltage delivery systems for separate circuits.

Optical and computational components are combined to form a high precision, six degree-of-freedom, single-sided, noncontact position measurement system. Reflective optical targets are provided on a target object whose position is to be sensed. Light beams are directed toward the optical targets, producing reflected beams. Electrical signals are produced indicating the points of intersection of the reflected beams and the position-sensitive detectors. The position sensitive detectors may be lateral-effect photodiodes. The signals are transformed to provide measurements of translation along and rotation around three nonparallel axes which define the space in which the target object moves.

Noncontact position measurement system using optical sensors

Noncontact position measurement systems using optical sensors

Disclosed is an improved lateral effect position-sensitive device having a clover design and including a semiconductor body including a first doped surface-oriented region of one conductivity type, a second doped surface-oriented region of opposite conductivity type, and a layer of intrinsic semiconductor material separating the first region and the second region. The first region has concave boundaries and at least four vertices. A first plurality of electrical contacts electrically contacts the vertices, and a second plurality of contacts electrically contacts intermediate portions of the concave boundaries. Conductors electrically interconnect each of the second plurality of contacts with one of the first plurality of contacts.
