A hybrid lithium-ion battery-capacitor (H-LIBC) energy storage device includes a hybrid composite cathode electrode having a lithium ion battery (LIB) cathode active material and a lithium ion capacitor (LIC) cathode active material. An anode electrode having a surface is pre-loaded and pressed with a lithium (Li) thin film source. The anode electrode is pre-lithiated with the lithium film source by positioning the Li film source on the surface of anode electrode after electrolyte filling and soaking processes, a separator and an organic solvent electrolytic solution including a lithium salt electrolyte are also provided. A method of making a hybrid lithium-ion battery-capacitor and a method of making a hybrid composite cathode for a hybrid lithium-ion battery-capacitor are also disclosed.

Hybrid lithium-ion battery-capacitor (H-LIBC) energy storage devices

Ultra-thin lithium ion capacitors with ultra-high power performance are provided. Ultra-thin electrodes and ultra-thin lithium films can be used for the ultra-thin lithium ion capacitor. A lithium ion capacitor can include a first positive electrode and a second positive electrode, a negative electrode disposed between the first positive electrode and the second positive electrode, a first lithium film disposed between the first positive electrode and the negative electrode, and a second lithium film disposed between the second positive electrode and the negative electrode. Each of the first and second lithium films can include an electrolyte. In addition, at least one separator can be provided between the first positive electrode and the first lithium film, and at least one separator can be provided between the second positive electrode and the second lithium film.

Ultra-thin lithium-ion capacitor with ultra-high power performance

A lithium-ion capacitor (LIC) is provided which includes positive electrodes, negative electrodes pre-loaded on surface with lithium sources including lithium strips and ultra-thin lithium films having holes, separators and organic solvent electrolyte with lithium salt for high performance including high energy density, high power density, long cycle life, long DC life and wide temperature ranges. A method for making an LIC is also provided, where cell components important to optimize the electrochemical performance of LIC's are configured, said components include PE active material and binders, NE active material and binders, thickness/mass ratio of positive electrode (PE) to negative electrode (NE) active layers, PE and NE's size designs and layer numbers, types of material for Separators and NE pre-lithiation methods, NE pre-lithiation includes loading various lithium (Li) sources including lithium strips and ultra-thin lithium films having holes onto the surface of NE.

Lithium-ion capacitor

The present invention is directed to a method for pre-lithiation of negative electrodes during lithium loaded electrode manufacturing for use in lithium-ion capacitors. There is provided a system and method of manufacture of LIC electrodes using thin lithium film having holes therein, and in particular, to the process of manufacturing lithium loaded negative electrodes for lithium-ion capacitors by pre-lithiating electrodes with thin lithium metal films, wherein the thin lithium metal films include holes therein, and the lithium loaded negative electrodes are manufactured using a roll-to-roll lamination manufacturing, process.

Method of negative electrode pre-lithiation for lithium-ion capacitors

The present invention is directed to a method for pre-lithiation of negative electrodes during lithium loaded electrode manufacturing for use in lithium-ion capacitors. There is provided a system and method of manufacture of LIC electrodes using thin lithium film having holes therein, and in particular, to the process of manufacturing lithium loaded negative electrodes for lithium-ion capacitors by pre-lithiating electrodes with thin lithium metal films, wherein the thin lithium metal films include holes therein, and the lithium loaded negative electrodes are manufactured using a roll-to-roll lamination manufacturing process.

The present invention provides for two types of wide operating temperature range electrolyte formulations that contain methyl butyrate (MB) and additives have been investigated and compared in Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs), which were consisted of hard carbon (HC)/stabilized lithium metal powder (SLMP) anodes and activated carbon (AC) cathodes. The electrolyte L1 that was 1M LiPFin ethylene carbonate (EC)+ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC)+MB (20:20:60 v/v %)+0.1M lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) and electrolyte L2 that was 1M LiPFin EC+EMC+MB (20:20:60 v/v %)+0.1M lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) enabled the LICs to discharge at the temperature as low as &#x2212;40&#xb0; C., which the conventional electrolyte LP30 that was 1 M LiPFin EC+dimethyl carbonate (DMC) (50:50 w/w %) could not achieve. At the low temperature of &#x2212;40&#xb0; C., L2 held more than 64% of the discharge capacity at 30&#xb0; C., while the L1 only had the discharge capacity retention of 30%. In addition, L2 proved to achieve better cycling performance compared to L1. After 10,000 cycles, the capacity retention of L1 and L2 were about 86.6% and 84.7%, which demonstrated the stable cycling performance for electrolyte L1 and L2. In summary, L2 was the most suitable electrolyte for the LICs energy storage devices which would be applied in the temperature as low as &#x2212;40&#xb0; C.

Wide operating temperature range electrolytes for lithium-ion capacitors achieving high performance

The present invention provides for high performance lithium-ion capacitor laminate cells that include positive electrodes, negative electrodes and organic solvent electrolyte with lithium salt, and a method for making said high performance lithium-ion capacitor laminate cells. These high performance lithium-ion capacitor laminate cells of the present invention, include a negative electrode which is pre-doped with sufficient lithium ions by employing lithium sources including lithium powder known as SLMP or thin lithium films on the surface of negative electrodes, and this pre-doping with placing lithium sources on negative electrode surface results in LIC laminate cells with considerably higher performance in specific energy, specific power and cycle life.
