A method is described for generating a hexahedral mesh from a geological model, including: generating a three-dimensional tetrahedral mesh from the geological model; getting a 3D hexahedral mesh based on a tetrahedral mesh, including: verticalizing the tetrahedral mesh to make the faults and boundaries of the domain vertical; calculating a global 2D parameterization for a reference horizon of the verticalized mesh; determining a 2D grid formed from quadrilaterals representing the reference horizon based on the global parameterization; getting a 3D hexahedral mesh by propagation of the grid to the other horizons of the model; and restoring the initial geometry of the faults; and implementing an additional processing of the mesh in order to structure the mesh near each singular point.

Method for generating a hexahedral mesh

A system and method for modeling a geological structure may include, in an initial model, computing a first function for a geological structure including a first set of iso-surfaces. A processor may detect if the first set of iso-surfaces intersect a set of geological markers within a threshold proximity. If not, the initial model may be corrected using an induced mesh having an increased cell resolution compare to the initial model for computing a second function for the geological structure including a second set of iso-surfaces that intersect the geological markers within the threshold proximity. A processor may insert the second set of iso-surfaces into a second model to locally increase its resolution relative to the initial model by dividing cells in the second model along the second set of iso-surfaces. For each new geological structure, the above steps may be repeated using the second model as the initial model.

Systems and methods of multi-scale meshing for geologic time modeling

A method for editing a volume-based model imaging geological structures. An initial volume-based model comprising a volumetric mesh and updated geological data defined within a region of the model is received. The volume-based model is decomposed by converting the volumetric mesh into surface meshes linked by stratigraphic fibers to generate a surface-based model. The defined region of the surface-based model is edited by editing positions of control nodes of the surface meshes along the stratigraphic fibers in the defined region of the model so as to fit the updated geological data. The plurality of stratigraphic fibers are updated based on the edited positions of the control nodes so as to fit the updated geological data. The edited surface-based model is meshed to generate an updated volume-based model comprising a volumetric mesh defined by the edited positions of the control nodes. The updated volume-based model is stored and/or displayed.

System and method for editing geological models by switching between volume-based models and surface-based structural models augmented with stratigraphic fiber bundles

A system and method for modeling a subsurface structure. Data representing a configuration of faults, horizons, and/or unconformities may be transformed to a depositional model comprising cells representing an estimated configuration of subsurface structure at a depositional time period when the subsurface structure was formed. Groups of cells in the depositional model may be divided into sub-meshes using iso-surfaces, where one set of iso-surfaces may represent the horizons at the depositional time period. The sub-meshes may be divided into one or more parts using the transformed geological data representing an estimated depositional configuration of the faults. For each group of cells in each sub-mesh part, the group of cells in the sub-mesh part may be represented by a single polyhedron. The polyhedrons may be transformed to generate a current model to represent the current configuration of the faults and horizons using transformed polyhedrons.

Systems and methods for generating a geological model honoring horizons and faults

A method of transforming an input stratigraphic grid SGrid which represents a region including one or more geological discontinuities is now disclosed. At least one target cell that is local to one or more geological discontinuities is transformed by displacing at least one target vertex of the target cell of the input SGrid in a selected direction that: i) is selected to approximate a local tangent of the reference horizon; and ii) is oriented from the target vertex to a representative manifold representing one of the geological discontinuities and/or an intersection between two or more of the geological discontinuities. A magnitude of a displacement by which the target vertex is moved is determined according to a non-Euclidian distance between the target vertex of the target cell of the input SGrid and the representative manifold.
