A continuous mass polymerization process for making an extrusion grade ABS resin having desirable properties and suitable for making refrigerator liners is disclosed. The process comprise charging a reaction mixture into a first in a series of reactors under conditions promoting polymerization, the mixture comprising diene rubber, a mixture of monomers, inert solvent and a chemical initiator to form a reaction mixture. The mixture is then transferred into a subsequent reactor operating at a temperature of 130 to 155&deg; C. with no addition of chemical initiator and the resulting product is then devolatilized. The ABS thus produced contains about 10 to 16 pbw of dispersed rubber particles having an average particle diameter of 0.3 to 0.7 microns.

This intermediate with mismatched nitrile monomer can be blended with another rubber graft copolymer of different particle size dispersed in ungrafted matrix which contains matched nitrile monomer in the surface graft and matrix to provide a polyblend having properties at least equivalent to those obtained by blending two rubber graft copolymers of different particle size dispersed in a matrix which each contain matched nitrile monomer levels in the surface graft and matrix. The mismatched intermediate is prepared by continuous mass polymerization.

The invention relates to a process for preparing ABS polyblends by grafting large diene rubber particles in aqueous latices in the presence of oligomeric surfactants providing large grafted diene rubber particles in latices that are stable and essentially free of coagulum. The ABS polyblends recovered from such latices are free of hard spots and have superior toughness.

The invention relates to a process for dewatering an aqueous latex containing rubber particles grafted with alkenyl aromatic and alkenyl nitrile monomers and emulsified with an anionic surfactant wherein alkenyl aromatic and alkenyl nitrile monomers are dispersed in said latex along with a cationic surfactant in an amount sufficient to deemulsify said grafted rubber particles. The grafted rubber particles are extracted from the aqueous phase into the monomer phase as a liquid oil phase, with the aid of the cationic surfactant, said aqueous phase forming a separate water phase essentially free of said oil phase followed by separating said water phase from said liquid oil phase.
