A data storage library is described that protects against a malware attack by providing a scheduled write window of time where archive data can be written to tape cartridges in the tape library on behalf of a client. At times outside of the write window, the tape library is disabled from writing any archive data to any of the tape cartridges in the tape library. Accordingly, the tape library is protected from a malicious entity attempting to download malware to tape cartridges in the tape library outside of the designated write windows. The tape library is configured to provide or otherwise read archived data from a tape cartridge both in the write window and outside of the write window.

Write window protection mode in a tape library

A data storage library is described that essentially provides a write once and read many (WORM) conversion device integrated with a picker device all of which are inside of the data storage library. One embodiment contemplates that after receiving a request to store data in a WORM arrangement on a tape cartridge in the data storage library a tape cartridge selected from a scratch pool of tape cartridges can be converted to a WORM tape cartridge via the picker device, during the normal activity of using a picker device to grasp the selected tape cartridge.

After receiving a request to store data in a WORM arrangement on a tape cartridge in the data storage library and appropriate tape cartridge is selected from a scratch pool of tape cartridges, brought by a robotic transporter to a WORM station where the tape cartridge is converted into a WORM tape cartridge. The WORM tape cartridge can be converted back to a non-write disabled tape cartridge at the WORM station.

An apparatus and associated method related to reading from memory an indicia that is dedicated to identifying a first portion less than an entirety of an addressable storage medium, the first portion having previously been subjected to a certification scrutiny. In relation to results of the reading, a second portion less than the entirety of the addressable storage medium is selected for subsequently subjecting the second portion to the certification scrutiny.

A data storage library is described including a plurality of tape cartridges wherein each of the tape cartridges possesses an auxiliary radio frequency memory device in which auxiliary digital data is stored. The library also includes at least one drive disposed substantially within the library capable of transferring user data to and from one of the tapes. The library further includes at least one auxiliary radio frequency memory device reader that capable of reading the auxiliary digital data and transmitting the auxiliary digital data to at least one designated location, the reader is independent of the at least one drive.

A method for certifying data on tape cartridges for a library with a first tape cartridge that possesses a medium auxiliary memory device, a medium auxiliary memory reader/writer, a first tape drive and a second tape drive, a shelf system, and access to a memory device containing a media lifecycle management data base. After a period of time from when data was originally stored on the tape first cartridge, a portion of data residing on the first tape cartridge is read. The portion of data is assessed as to whether a percentage of the portion contains an expected data structure and if the percentage exceeds a predetermined threshold, a data recovery sequence is initiated.

Tape data assessment

A method for recovering data from a failed tape cartridge is presented. The reliability of a tape cartridge is assessed via the number of read errors encountered. If the number or read errors is excessive, the tape cartridge is deemed unreliable and the tape cartridge is restricted from storing anymore data. A search is performed to look for duplicate data and if found a copy of the duplicate data is stored to a replacement tape cartridge. The replacement tape cartridge assumes all identity of the original failed tape cartridge.

A storage system is provided having at least one storage unit, the storage unit including an electrical power source, a communication source and a cover that defines, at least in part an interior space. The storage system operates with a media blade that comprises a plurality of data storage elements, the media blade moveable in a drawer like motion though a cooperating opening in the cover. The storage system further includes a motion accommodating conductor apparatus connecting the plurality of data storage elements to the electrical power source and the communication source such that power from the electrical power source and communication from the communication source may be provided to the media blade without interruption when the media blade is moved in the drawer like motion outward from at least partially within the interior space.

A method and apparatus for a generating a tape format like file with an associated look-up table on a non-tape storage medium is disclosed. In one configuration, a data storage arrangement can comprise a host computer in communication with a storage system by means of a streaming protocol. The storage system can comprise a non-tape storage medium having at least one file comprising a plurality of records each having user data and meta data wherein the meta data comprises data fields for and about the record. A table associated with the file is adapted to contain information related to at least one of the records. The table can be accessed by the storage system to reduce the amount of time spent locating the records.

A power-using device for drawing power over a communication and power bus is provided. The power-using device is adapted to draw only power from the communication and power bus, the bus being connected to a power supply and host computer. The power-using device is further capable of communicating with the bus via a host bus adapter through a communication link not comprised by the bus. The host bus adapter is capable of receiving power and communication from the bus.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus relating generally to analysis techniques for data integrity following an un-safe power down occurrence of non-tape media components comprising a storage system. The data storage system comprises at least one random access memory storage device adapted to be power cycled in at least an on and off condition. The random access memory storage device comprises at least one storage medium comprising a first stored data segment. The storage device is adapted to receive data for storage on the medium in at least a second data segment. At least one state bit has a first state associated with the second data segment during the storage of the second data segment and a second state associated with the second data segment after completion of the storage of the second data segment wherein the state bit is stored in non volatile memory associated with the storage device. The state bit is capable of being accessed to determine completion status of the storage of at least the second data segment after the storage device is power cycled in the on condition.
