According to one embodiment, a system in response to a request to back up a virtual machine to a backup storage system, generates a snapshot of the virtual machine. The system identifies one or more files within the snapshot that satisfy a predetermined criterion. If the one or more files are identified, the storage system backs up a modified representation of the snapshot by, analyzing the snapshot to determine addresses of the identified one or more files within the snapshot, and substituting content of the identified one or more files at the addresses with a predetermined data pattern. The system deduplicates the modified representation of the snapshot to remove duplicated data segments and copies data segments of the modified representation of the snapshot to the backup storage system such that data segments to be copied to the backup storage system is minimized.

A method, apparatus, and computer program product for reclaiming one or more chunks in a snapshot storage space, are disclosed. The method comprises detecting one or more unused chunks in the snapshot storage space in response to a predefined trigger event, and reclaiming one or more detected unused chunks by providing the one or more detected unused chunks to a storage pool for reuse. One or more unused chunks may be detected by scanning a first mapping table that records a storage state of a plurality of chunks in the snapshot storage space, and a determination made whether the one or more detected unused chunks have been reclaimed. If the one or more detected unused chunks have not been reclaimed, the one or more detected unused chunks may be provided to the storage pool and a second mapping table updated to record a reclaiming state of the one or more unused chunks. A new snapshot may be stored using a chunk in the snapshot storage space that has not been used and has not been reclaimed yet.

Various embodiments of the present invention provide a method and apparatus for reusing a storage block of a file system. The file system is based on a thin provision storage configuration and shares a storage pool with a further file system. The method comprises detecting an unused storage block in a storage space of the file system in response to a predefined trigger event. The method further comprises in response to an unused storage block being detected in the storage space, providing the unused storage block to the storage pool for being reused. According to various embodiments of the present invention, effective utilization of the storage space of the storage pool is achieved.

It is determined whether the target location is mapped to physical storage. Responsive to determining that the target location is not mapped to physical storage, performing first processing to service the write operation. The first processing includes sending the write operation along with a hint to a caching layer where the hint indicates to store zeroes to locations that do not include user data. The caching layer forms a data portion denoting data stored at a logical address subrange of the logical device. The logical address subrange includes the target location. A portion of data is copied from the first device to the second device. A first calculated value is determined in accordance with a plurality of factors. In accordance with the first calculated value and a threshold ratio, it is determined whether to update the checkpoint data denoting progress of the copying process that copies data from the first device to the second device. If it is determined to update the checkpoint data, first processing is performed that updates the checkpoint data.
