A continuous tool rotation tool turret is comprised of a turret head, a plurality of spindles and a motor. The spindles are attached to the turret head. Each spindle is adapted to secure and rotate a cutting tool. The motor simultaneously rotates each spindle. The spindles rotate at an operational speed while the turret head is being indexed. A bevel gear operationally connected to the motor simultaneously rotates a bevel gear attached to each spindle. Air pressure separates the turret head from its rest surface during indexing. The turret head rotates around a manifold which supplies coolant and pressurized air to the turret head. Optionally, a mating wedge and wedge receptacle attached to the turret head and its housing provide for more precise indexing of the turret head. The continuous tool rotation minimizes the time needed to index the turret from one position to another.

A generating head assembly for cutting or machining a surface on a workpiece and including a generating head mounted for relative rotation with the workpiece and with cutting or machining members having a radially advanced cutting or machining position for cutting or machining the surface of the workpiece and a radially retracted non-cutting on non-machining position; the generating head assembly includes an actuating structure for providing relative rotation between the generating head and the workpiece and a rotary motor mounted with the generating head; the rotary motor is selectively operable to rotate an actuating shaft relative to the generating head to actuate the cutting or machining members to their radially advanced and retracted positions without axial thrust loads being applied to the generating head.

Apparatus including a saw mill cutter for removing risers or excess material from castings such as for engine blocks, cylinder heads, cam carriers, transmission housings and the like, with the saw mill cutter simultaneously cutting the riser from the casting body while milling the cut surface to form a finished and/or semi finished surface and with a method for utilizing such a saw mill cutter and forming such finished and/or semi-finished surface and with one form of the method including feeding the casting widthwise to the cutter such that it is cut and milled along its length.

An index table structure and method of indexing where the index table structure includes a table top which is angularly rotatable and has a plurality of cam members around the periphery thereof with each including radially outwardly opening cam recess having a bust locating surface for defining a precisely located indexed position of the table top, a dual motor brake structure for driving the table top between angularly separated indexed positions, a shot pin positioned adjacent the periphery of the table top and having a second locating surface adapted to mate with the first locating surface of the cam recess to locate the indexed table top in a precisely indexed position, a fluid cushion structure for providing a fluid cushion for the table top during rotation; in indexing the table top it is rotated in one direction whereby the shot pin is cam actuated into one of the cam recesses to approximately locate the table top in an indexed position and subsequently the table top is rotated in the opposite direction to engage the first and second locating surfaces on the cam recess and shot pin to precisely locate the table top in one of its indexed positions with the shot pin being wedge locked to prevent the table top from rotating out of position.

A mechanism for providing a cycloidal output motion for an output member in a linear direction using a constant velocity rotary input motion driving an off-center input shaft and drive gear and utilizing a secondary motion to influence the position of the drive gear in relation to the output member and the acceleration and deceleration of the output member. A compact embodiment utilizes a ring gear and planetary and a reaction motion to provide the secondary input.

A milling machine for cutting a surface on a workpiece and including a milling head assembly having a cutting stroke for cutting the surface of the workpiece and a return stroke to prepare for the next cutting stroke, the milling head assembly including a rotatable spindle structure with a cutter structure mounted to the spindle structure for rotation therewith and being actuable to provide a desired cut on the workpiece surface and a piston and cylinder construction operatively connected with the cutter structure to axially position the cutter structure separately from the spindle structure between an advanced position to provide a desired cut on the workpiece surface and a retracted position relative to the workpiece surface to preclude cutting engagement with the workpiece surface as the cutter structure is moved in opposite directions traversing the workpiece surface and a unique method providing a rough cut on the workpiece surface when the cutter structure is in the retracted position and a finish cut when the cutter structure is in the advanced position and actuating the cutter structure to the retracted position for the return stroke after the finish cut.

Particularly compact facing head structure including a housing having an axis of rotation and adapted to be directly secured to a rotating spindle for rotation about the axis of rotation thereof and slides secured to an end face of the housing for movement transversely of the axis of rotation of the housing, which facing head extends a minimum distance beyond the mounting face of the spindle. The slides may be arcuate whereby convex or concave surfaces may be machined. One end of the actuating member may extend through the end face of the housing so that a boring tool may be secured to the end of the actuating member whereby simultaneous boring and facing operations may be accomplished with the facing head. The slides are spring biased in one direction in all positions thereof to compensate for centrifugal force, backlash and facing head wear. Structure is provided for lubrication of the facing head under predetermined pressure with the facing head rotating. Passages are provided in the facing head for passing coolant to a workpiece through the head.

A double ended tap having threaded portions at both ends thereof which may include a centering recess in each end and fluted portions which aid in securing the tap to a tool holder, and a tool holder in combination with the double ended tap and means for securing either end of the double ended tap to the tool holder.

A floating tool holder including a cylindrical shank having a recess in one end thereof, floating structure including in different modifications an outer race or a torque washer and a tool receiver positioned within the recess and held in radially spaced relation to the recess walls by resilient O-rings whereby radial translation of the tool receiver with respect to the shank and pivotal movement of one end of the tool receiver within and relative to the shank are permitted, tool adapter structure received within the tool receiver, and means for releasably securing the tool adapter structure to the tool receiver. In another modification, the floating tool holder includes telescopic, resiliently biased compression structure received over the shank thereof. The floating tool holder may be further modified by a quick-release coupling for securing a tool adapter to the tool receiver portion of the floating structure.

Particularly compact facing head structure including a housing having an axis of rotation and adapted to be directly secured to a rotating spindle for rotation about the axis of rotation thereof, slides secured to an end face of the housing for movement transversely of the axis of rotation of the housing, an actuating member positioned within the housing for movement axially thereof having external helical cam teeth thereon, an axially fixed cam member positioned between the housing and actuating member for rotation relative thereto having internal helical cam teeth engaged with the helical cam teeth on the actuating member whereby on axial movement of the actuating member relative to the housing the cam member is rotated angularly with respect thereto, and slot and pin mechanisms operable between the slides and cam member for moving the slides transversely of the axis of rotation of the housing on rotation of the cam member, which facing head extends a minimum distance beyond the mounting face of the spindle. The slides may be arcuate whereby convex or concave surfaces may be machined. One end of the actuating member may extend through the end face of the housing so that a boring tool may be secured to the end of the actuating member whereby simultaneous boring and facing operations may be accomplished with the facing head.

Structure for locking a cylinder piston or the like in one limiting position thereof including a housing, a wedge member secured to the piston for reciprocation therewith mounted within the housing and having a cam surface thereon, and a locking piston positioned within the housing for reciprocal movement transversely of the wedge member also having a cam surface thereon engageable with the cam surface of the wedge member in one position thereof to secure the cylinder piston in the one limiting position. The camming surfaces have a surface area and a locking angle with respect to the cylinder piston to provide improved locking force on the cylinder piston and prevent backup of the cylinder piston on pressure drop or failure to the locking piston.

Structure for and method of lubricating a rotating facing head or the like wherein the facing head is secured to a spindle rotatably mounted in a fixed frame for rotation with the facing head, including a lubricating ring concentric with the spindle and sleeved thereover secured to the frame, a lubricating passage extending radially through the lubricating ring, an annular groove between the lubricating ring and spindle in communication with the lubricating passage through the lubricating ring, radially extending passages through the spindle in communication at their outer end with the annular groove, sealing means for sealing between the inner surface of the lubricating ring and the outer surface of the spindle on each side of the ring, and an axially extending opening or passage within the spindle for passing lubricating fluid from the radially extending passages through the spindle axially of the spindle to the facing head. The method of lubricating the facing head while it is rotating includes passing lubricating fluid through the lubricating passage in the ring around the annular groove and through the radially extending passages and axially extending openings or passages in the spindle to the facing head. The lubricating fluid may be placed under pressure. In one modification of the invention, a pumping action for the lubricating fluid toward the facing head is provided by rotation of the spindle.
