A man down indicator includes a gas detector which includes a motion sensor. A separate wearable element also includes a motion sensor. The element is wirelessly coupled to, and paired with, the detector. In responsive to a lack of sensed motion at both detector and the element, a pre-alarm condition is initiated for a predetermined period of time by circuitry carried by one of the detector, or the element. Unless interrupted, when the pre-alarm condition terminates, a man down alarm is generated.

A photoacoustic gas detector includes an integrated source, infrared filter and an acoustic sensor. The source, filter and acoustic sensor can be integrated onto one or more semiconductor substrates, such as silicon. Processing circuitry can also be integrated onto the substrate. Further, the source, filter and acoustic sensor can be integrated into a single component package, such as a metal can transistor package.

A gas detector includes at least one gas sensing element and a calorimetric sensing material for detection of a different, potentially contaminating gas which can impair the function of the gas sensing element disposed within the detector. The sensing material provides a visual indication of the presence of the potentially contaminating gas.
