An exhaust sensor comprises a sensing electrode and a reference electrode each in contact with an electrolyte. At least one of the sensing electrode and the reference electrode are formed by depositing an electrode precursor material on an electrolyte precursor material and sintering the combination at a sufficient temperature for a sufficient time to achieve densification of the electrolyte, wherein the electrode precursor material comprises an alkali salt. Electrode patterns having enhanced perimeter ratios are also disclosed. The resulting exhaust sensor is capable of providing a usable output at a reduced operating temperature.

Low-temperature activity exhaust sensor

A sensor includes an oxygen pump cell; an oxygen pump chamber; an emf cell; a reference chamber providing a fluid connection to the reference gas; gas channels in fluid communication with the pump and emf electrodes, the reference gas comprising reformate produced by a fuel reformer fueled by an air-fuel gas mixture having an air-fuel ratio; a reformer electronic control module; a sensor electronic control module; a heater; a temperature sensor disposed in communication with the heater and the sensor control module for maintaining the sensor at a desired operating temperature; a closed loop controlled operation amplifier in electrical communication with the sensor, whereby the oxygen pump cell provides sufficient oxygen ions to oxidize an incoming diffusion-limiting fuel flux to the emf cell and maintain a constant emf at the emf cell, and wherein a current value represents an equivalent to the air-fuel ratio of the air-fuel gas mixture.

Sensor and sensing method

An exhaust gas sensing system and a method for determining concentrations of exhaust gas constituents are provided. The exhaust gas sensing system includes a NHsensing cell, a NOsensing cell, a NOpumping cell, and a current sensor that detects an electrical current flowing through the NOpumping cell. A computer determines a NOconcentration value, a NHconcentration value, a NO concentration value, and a NOconcentration value based on signals from the NHsensing cell, the NOsensing cell, and the current sensor.

Exhaust gas sensing system and method for determining concentrations of exhaust gas constituents

An exhaust gas sensor and a method for determining concentrations of exhaust gas constituents are provided. The exhaust gas sensor includes a NONernst cell that generates a first voltage indicative of a NOconcentration in the exhaust gases communicating with the NOsensing electrode. The exhaust gas sensor further includes a NONernst cell that generates a second voltage indicative of a NOconcentration in the exhaust gases communicating with the NOsensing electrode. The exhaust gas sensor further includes a NHNernst cell that generates a third voltage indicative of a NHconcentration in the exhaust gases communicating with the NHsensing electrode.

Exhaust gas sensor and method for determining concentrations of exhaust gas constituents

One embodiment of an ammonia gas sensor includes: a reference electrode, an ammonia selective sensing electrode and an electrolyte disposed therebetween. The sensing electrode comprises the reaction product of a main material selected from the group consisting of vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium oxides, tungsten oxides, molybdenum oxides, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing main materials, and an electrically conducting material selected from the group consisting of electrically conductive metals, electrically conductive metal oxides, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing.

Ammonia gas sensors

In a solid-oxide fuel cell assembly comprising a plurality of components having electrically-conductive mating surfaces therebetween, the surfaces are sealed by an electrically insulating gasket that include a mineral composition comprising about 66 mol % MgO and about 33 mol % SiO, the mineral composition being known mineralogically as forsterite. A brazing alloy may be applied to enhance bonding of the gasket into place. The gasket composition may include additions of AlOto enhance electrical resistivity while having little to no impact of matching expansion coefficients of the gasket and metal mating surfaces. Also, additions such as titania or zirconia to inhibit glassy phase grain boundaries and the formation of impurities and pores in the ceramic grain boundaries may be used. A recommended particle size distribution of precursor powders is disclosed that leads to an optimum microstructure of the sintered gasket.

A sensor including a species selective electrode and a reference electrode having an electrolyte layer disposed therebetween; a reference gas channel in fluid communication with the reference electrode; a heater and a temperature sensor; wherein the species selective electrode is disposed on a first side of an insulating layer separating the species selective electrode from the electrolyte layer, the insulating layer having a first substantially solid area and a second area having an opening pattern extending through the insulating layer; the species selective electrode comprising a species sensing electrode portion disposed on the opening pattern of the insulating layer so as to contact the electrolyte layer through the opening pattern and a non-active electrode lead portion disposed over the first substantially solid area so that the non-active electrode lead portion is in electrical communication with the species sensing electrode portion and is free from contact with the electrolyte layer.

Gas sensor and method for forming same

Disclosed herein are NOx sensors and methods of using the same. In one embodiment, a method for sensing NOx comprises: contacting a first NOx electrode with the gas, contacting a second NOx electrode with the gas, determining a NOemf between the first NOX electrode and a first reference electrode, determining a NOx emf between the second NOx electrode and a second reference electrode, and determining a NOconcentration and a NO concentration using the NOemf and the NOx emf. The first electrode can be at a first temperature of greater than or equal to about 700&#xb0; C., and the second electrode can be at a second temperature of about 500&#xb0; C. to about 650&#xb0; C.

NOx sensor and methods of using the same

In a planar oxygen sensor having a pump cell, a reference cell, a sensor chamber and a heating device, a ground plane electrode is provided and includes a sensing portion having a first sense lead and a second sense lead and a measuring portion having a first measuring lead and a second measuring lead, wherein the first measuring lead and the second measuring lead have increased surface area relative to said sensing portion such that the resistance between the first measuring lead and the second measuring lead is reduced and wherein the first measuring lead is disposed so as to be communicated with the first sense lead and the second measuring lead is disposed so as to be communicated with the second sense lead. Also, in a planar oxygen sensor having a pump cell, a reference cell, a sensor chamber, a heating device and a ground plane electrode that includes a sensing portion having a first sense lead and a second sense lead and a measuring portion having a first measuring lead and a second measuring lead, a method for measuring the temperature of the planar oxygen sensor is provided and includes obtaining a temperature measurement device, communicating the temperature measurement device with the first measuring lead and the second measuring lead, operating the planar oxygen sensor so as to cause the heating device to heat the planar oxygen sensor, and measuring the resistance between the first measuring lead and the second measuring lead.

A method for manufacturing a planar sensor, comprises disposing a film of a material on a substrate, wherein the material is selected from the group consisting of platinum, rhodium, palladium and mixtures and alloys comprising at least one of the foregoing materials; annealing the material; measuring a resistance value of the material; laser trimming the annealed material; heat treating the laser trimmed material; and laser trimming the heat treated material to form the sensor.

Temperature sensor and method of making the same

A sensor may comprise a first electrode and a second electrode in mutual ionic communication with an electrolyte, a first socket disposed near a rear portion of a sensor element, a first lead disposed in electrical communication with the first electrode and in physical contact with the first socket and configured for electrical communication with a first terminal element, a second socket disposed near the rear portion of the sensor element, and a second lead disposed in electrical communication with the second electrode and in physical contact with the second socket and configured for electrical communication with a second terminal element. The first socket is disposed through at least one of an edge and an end of the sensor element, and the second socket is disposed through at least one of the edge and the end of the sensor element.

Ceramic device, sensor device, method of making the same, and method for sensing gas

A sensor comprises: a pump cell comprising an inner pump electrode, an outer pump electrode, a pump cell electrolyte layer interposed between the inner pump electrode and the outer pump electrode and a cell isolation layer disposed on the inner pump electrode on a side opposite the pump cell electrolyte, wherein the outer electrode is in fluid communication with a reducing gas. A reference cell is in operable communication with the pump cell, the reference cell comprising an outer reference electrode and an inner reference electrode, and a reference cell electrolyte interposed between the outer reference electrode and the inner reference electrode. A diffusion limiting material flanks both sides of a chamber formed between the cell isolation layer and a cell separation layer, wherein the cell separation layer comprises a via coaxial and in fluid communication with the inner pump electrode, the diffusing limiting material, and the outer reference electrode, and wherein the diffusion limiting material has a gas permeability such that the limiting current of oxygen in air is about 0.05 mA to about 5 mA per cmof pump electrode area.

Gas sensor and method for use thereof

Disclosed herein is a ceramic part, gas sensor, and method for making the gas sensor. The ceramic part comprises: an insulating layer affixed to a substrate wherein the insulating layer comprising AlOparticles; and a glass comprising about 45 to about 69 mole percent SiO, 0 to about 9 mole percent BO, 0 to about 26 mole percent AlO, 0 and 25 mole percent SrO, and about 10 to about 26 mole percent REO, where REOis selected from the group consisting of YO, three valent rare earth oxides, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing. In one embodiment of a ceramic part, a gas sensor comprises: an electrolyte layer having disposed on opposite sides thereof a first electrode and a second electrode; and an insulating layer that is in intimate contact with the second electrode, wherein the insulating layer comprises alumina and frit. The method of making the gas sensor comprises: disposing a first electrode and a second electrode on opposite sides of an electrolyte layer; forming an insulating layer comprising alumina and frit; disposing the insulating layer adjacent to the second electrode to form a green sensor; and heating the green sensor to a temperature sufficient to sinter the electrolyte layer and the insulating layer.

Gas sensor having an insulating layer

A conductive co-fired body for an electrochemical cell for an exhaust sensor comprises zirconia, yttrium oxide, and alumina. The body comprises about 15 to about 30 weight % monoclinic phase zirconia. This produces an electrochemical cell having low impedance wherein the zirconia body and alumina body are co-fired. One method for manufacturing the electrochemical cell comprises combining zirconia, yttria, and alumina with solvent and dispersant to form a mixture. After, binder is added to the mixture which is then de-aired and cast onto a tape surface. The tape is dried, metallized, and laminated to an unfired alumina surface. The structure is then co-fired to form a body for said electrochemical cell.
