A low carbon plus nitrogen, free-machining, austenitic stainless steel having improved machinability and excellent corrosion resistance. The steel composition in weight percent is carbon plus nitrogen up to about 0.06, chromium 16 to 20, nickel 6 to 14, manganese up to 0.60, sulfur 0.15 to 0.50, silicon up to about 1, phosphorus up to about 0.20, molybdenum up to about 1 and balance iron.

A powder-metallurgy method for producing tubular product having at least one surface and preferably an internal surface thereof clad with an alloy different from and preferably more resistant to destructive media than the material from which the remainder of the tubing is constructed. An assembly is constructed of a metal tubing having an internal surface to be clad and a tubular insert mounted generally axially within the tubing in spaced-apart relation to the internal surface thereof, which provides a generally annular cavity between the internal surface of the tubing and the tubular insert. This cavity is filled with metal particles of a composition to be clad on the tubing internal surface. The cavity is sealed and the assembly is heated to an elevated temperature at which it is forged to compact the metal particles introduced to the cavity to substantially full density and metallurgically bond the particles to the internal surface of the tubing to provide a desired destructive-media resistant cladding. The forging operation includes passing the assembly along a feed path having an axis through a forging box having a plurality of hammers evenly spaced around the assembly. The hammers extend and retract radially with respect to the feedpath axis to impart a radial forging action to the assembly as the assembly passes through the forging box.

Method for producing clad tubular product

A method for producing high speed, tool and die steel articles from prealloyed powders. The method comprises placing particles of a prealloyed steel composition from which the article is to be made in a deformable container, heating the container and particles and then passing the heated container through a forging box having a plurality of hammers evenly spaced around the container and adapted to extend and retract radially to impart a radial forging action to the container. The forging action is of a magnitude and duration to compact the particles to an essentially fully dense article. Preferably, there are four hammers arranged in two pairs with the hammer of each pair being opposed and adapted to extend and retract in unison.

Method for compacting alloy powder

A powder-metallurgy produced, vanadium-containing, tungsten-type high-speed steel wherein hardness at elevated temperature is achieved without resorting to conventional, high cobalt contents. This is achieved by providing a critical amount of tungsten and/or molybdenum above that conventionally used in combination with vanadium and carbon in an amount sufficient to combine with the vanadium present and with an excess carbon to provide matrix strengthening. The high hardness and wear resistance at elevated temperature is imparted to the steel by the carbides of vanadium, tungsten and/or molybdenum. Columbium may be substituted for a portion of the vanadium.

A powder metallurgy tool steel article for use in applications requiring high wear resistance having a carbide content of 10 to 18 volume percent of substantially all MC-type vanadium carbides, which carbides are substantially spherical and uniformly dispersed; the carbon content of the article is balanced relative to the carbide formers vanadium, chromium and molybdenum to provide an amount of carbon in the matrix of the article sufficient to permit the article to be heat treated to a hardness of at least 56 R.sub.c.
