A lead or head end rail car includes crew living and working accommodations. Controls for the propulsion car, such as a locomotive, and other trailing cars are included in the head end car. Crashworthiness is built into the head end car to provide safety for the engineer and crew in case of accident.

Methods and means for providing a one-piece seamless enclosure include a plurality of panels each having a foam core surrounded by a fiber reinforced cloth or woven material. The panels are joined inside of an outer mold. An inner inflatable mold is inserted into the area between the panels and pressurized. Resin is pumped into the cavity between the inner and outer molds and then cured. The molds are removed and a one piece seamless enclosure or shelter is provided.

An outboard journal railway truck includes a journal bearing having an auxiliary structure with resilient elements attached thereto for carrying devices which are maintained in a fixed wheel to rail relationship. A primary suspension system having longitudinal, lateral and vertical springs is connected between the journal bearing housing and a side frame. The secondary suspension system includes a steering beam for maintaining vertical springs in vertical positions during movement of the beam with respect to the side frames of the truck and for transmitting the load from a car body directly to the side frames of the truck.

A knock-down extendible shelter structure is formed by a plurality of hingeable panels of wall, floor, and roof panels. Hinges are used to join the panels. The edges of the latches are used to fix them in place. A plurality of units including similar parts are adapted to be connected together to assemble a shelter of any size. The shelter is designed to be essentially a permanent building that can be readily dismantled and stored.

A railway truck includes a pair of pivotable side frames connected by a pivot assembly which maintains the side frames in tram while still permitting equalization. Springs are connected between a car body and the side frames to provide equalization for the wheels on the truck. The springs also serve as the load transmission path from the car body to the side frames.

A primary suspension spring disposed between a wheel journal and a railway truck side frame includes top and bottom elastomeric members which form a ring around the journal. Both members include a relatively large cut-away portion towards their centers to provide soft vertical and longitudinal spring rates for a car body. Relatively small amounts of elastomeric material are disposed longitudinally towards the front and rear of the large cut-away portions towards the tangents of the wheel journal.

A coupling assembly is provided to control the movement between two structural bodies when different forces are applied thereto. Initially, a restraint and limited movement is permitted by an elastomeric member for relatively low differential forces. With high differential forces, the restraint is overcome and the structural bodies move with respect to each other on a low friction member.

A pair of adjustment plates are disposed below a mechanical spring which supports a car body. At least one of the adjustment plates include spaced stepped portions to engage a portion of the other plate with the stepped portion engaged determining the height of the car. When the car load is removed from the springs, the relative positions of the plates may be selectively changed to adjust the height of the car body. A shock absorber is connected inside the mechanical spring and removable through the adjustment plates.

A primary suspension system is disposed between a wheel journal bearing and a side frame of a railway truck to minimize acceleration forces from being transmitted from a wheel axle unit to a car body. A pair of elastomeric members form a ring clamped around the journal bearing and are bonded to multiple outer plates disposed in different planes. Relatively low spring rates are provided when one set of outer multiple plates are operative with relatively high spring rates being provided when the elastomeric members are compressed and the inner multiple plates become operative.

A support structure for supporting a plurality of solar reflectors include a truss structure having a plurality of bar elements welded together to provide strength and rigidity. Longitudinal connector elements are connected to the truss element to permit attachment to the aligned closely disposed reflector panels. A pedestal disposed at each end of the support structure is adapted to receive and hold the truss structure with the attached panels and receiver. A guard beam is disposed below the bottom of the rear end of a trailer or truck. Energy absorbing members are connected between the trailer and the guard beam. When impact forces applied to the guard beam exceed predetermined minimum levels, the guard beam collapses and energy is absorbed in the absorbing members during the collapse of the beam.

A side bearing comprises integrally bonded pieces including an elastomeric cushion member secured to top and bottom plates and flexible leveling means secured to the bottom plate. The bearing is designed for connection between the bolster and truck side frames of a railway car. The elastomeric member includes progressively larger openings therein extending from its center to its ends to provide varying flexibility to permit articulation of the truck side frames relative to the bolster during operation.

A basic truck for a railway car includes a pair of side frames connected by suitable transverse disposed members. Standard structural members for holding different types of suspension and journal bearings of the car are provided and are secured to the end of the side frames at predetermined locations dependent upon the types of suspension and journal bearings used. Gusset members designed in accordance with the operating car requirements are connected to provide the principal structural connections between the mountings and the side frames.

A tapered blade for use in a windmill comprises a main spar or beam assembly having top and bottom flat sheets of metal. Tapered angle strips are welded along the edges of the sheets. With the sheets and strips twisted to the proper angles, they are joined together by shear web channels welded along the edges of the strips. Leading and trailing edge assemblies, comprising primarily foam material, are bonded to the spar. A fitting is provided to permit the blade to be attached to the mechanism to be driven on the windmill.

Flexible means, secured to the sideframe, extends around and is spaced from the axle on journal bearings. A circular structure supports the axle and journal bearings, and includes a portion extending radially away from the axis of said axle into the center of said flexible means and is attached to two spaced surfaces which also extend radially away from the axis of the axle.
