Polyurethane coating compositions that provide transparent, abrasion-resistant, and water-washable anti-fog coatings when applied to a substrate and cured are described herein. These polyurethane coating compositions have surfactants that are chemically associated with the polyurethane so as to not leach out or wash away when the coating surface is soaked or washed with water. The polyurethane coating compositions comprise isocyanate-reactive surfactants, isocyanate-reactive salts of surfactants, carboxylic-reactive surfactants, or combinations thereof that are chemically bonded to the polyurethane. Articles coated with such polyurethane coating compositions, and processes for applying the coating compositions to a substrate, are also provided herein.

Anti-fog polyurethane coating compositions

Anti-fog and scratch resistant polyurethane compositions are disclosed which include an isocyanate prepolymer, a hydrophilic polyol and an isocyanate-reactive surfactant. The reaction product of the component produces enhanced properties having permanent anti-fog and scratch-resistant characteristics. These compositions may be used as coatings, films and self-supporting articles. Plastic substrates coated with these compositions may be subsequently subjected to thermoforming, such as molding and shaping, without loss of their properties.

Scratch-resistant anti-fog coating composition incorporating

A polymer composition in the form of an alloy is disclosed, having hydrophilic and anti-fogging properties. The polymer alloy can be used as a coating, as an unsupported film or as a substrate having the desired anti-fogging properties. The composition can be used where hydrophilic properties are desired. Surfaces coated with the composition described herein are more readily wetted by water or aqueous fluids, and may have a coefficient of friction of 0.10 or less when in contact with water. The preferred composition contains a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol and a water-soluble polyvinyl pyrollidone polymer in a weight ratio of about 4:1 to about 1:10. A crosslinking agent comprised of a melamine, a mineral acid or a strong organic acid is included. The composition is preferably applied to a substrate, such as a lens, and cured to form the coating.

Hydrophilic compositions which are fog-resistant

A hydrophilic polymer blend is disclosed which comprises a first polymer component which is an organic solvent-soluble, thermoplastic polyvinylbutyral (PVB) and a second polymer component which is a hydrophilic poly(N-Vinyl lactam), e.g., a water soluble polyvinylpyrrolidone. The blend demonstrates slipperiness in aqueous environments and, among other applications, is useful in low-friction coatings for a wide variety of substrates. A method for providing the coatings is also described.

Hydrophilic polyvinybutyral alloys

The present invention is a shaving article such as a shaving cartridge which includes at least one blade and a blade support having a skin-engaging portion adjacent to a shaving edge of the blade. The skin-engaging portion is provided with a hydrogel comprising a water soluble polymer bound so as to prevent dissolution whereby the coefficient of friction of the skin-engaging portion is reduced in the presence of water.

Shaving articles lubricious when wet and compositions therefor

Hydrophilic polyvinylbutyral alloys

A medical material comprising a polyurethane complexed with polyvinylpyrrolidone and a bio-effecting agent, such as an anti-bacterial agent, complexed with the polyvinylpyrrolidone. The material is used per se as, for example a foam, and as a coating for medical devices such as, for example, catheters and wound drainage tubes.

Hydrophilic polymer blend

An anti-fog liquid coating composition comprises: a polymer which is polyvinylpyrrolidone, polydimethylacrylamide or a polyvinylpyrrolidone copolymer with a polymerizable alpha olefin free of functional groups reactive with isocyanates; a polyisocyanate prepolymer; a surfactant which will chemically bond to a reaction product of the polymer and prepolymer, and an organic solvent to form a solution of the foregoing ingredients. The invention includes a substrate having an anti-fog transparent coating comprising the reaction product of polyvinylpyrrolidione, a polyvinylpyrrolidone copolymer with a polymerizable alpha olefin free of functional groups reactive with isocyanates or polydimethylacrylamide with a polyisocyanate prepolymer, said reaction product being chemically bound to a surfactant. On curing, the surfactant is chemically combined with the hydrophilic polymer/isocyanate prepolymer composition and is not subject to extraction in any significant amount while still conferring improved fog resistance to the coated substrate.

Transparent anti-fog coating compositions

Certain solutions of lithium halides particularly solutions of lithium chloride dissolved readily poly(hydroxymethylene) and copolymers of hydroxymethylene with up to about 30 mol percent of ethylenically unsaturated comonomers at high concentrations suitable for solution spinning. Such solutions are desirable for commercial operation as well as preferred from an economical and toxicological point of view.

Solution of polyhydroxy methylene and products made therefrom

Blends of vinyl chloride polymers containing no carboxyl groups and about 10 to about 30 percent by weight of an ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer containing greater than 50 mole percent of vinyl alcohol therein provided excellent barrier packaging materials.
