A modular floor tile comprising a substrate having a first land with a support surface and first and second perimeter portions each defining a second land with a surface recessed relative to the support surface, the first and second perimeter portions each defining spaced-apart T-lugs and alternating T-recesses, the T-lugs defining extending abutments and notches, whereby two tiles join together by the T-recesses of a first tile receiving respective T-lugs of a second tile, with each notch receiving a respective one of the abutments and the contacting edges thereof resist separation of adjacent joined tiles during use of the mat.

A modular floor tile comprising a base substrate and top layer having a first land with a support surface and first and second perimeter portions each defining a second land with a surface recessed relative to the support surface, the first perimeter portion defining a recess and the opposing second perimeter portion defining a lug, whereby two tiles join together by the recess receiving a lug of a second tile, and the support surface supporting footwear remote from the second land to avoid scuffing against the joined lug and recess so the top layer is not delaminated from the base substrate.

A modular floor tile comprising a substrate having a first land with a support surface and first and second perimeter portions each defining a second land with a surface recessed relative to the support surface, the first and second perimeter portions each defining spaced-apart T-lugs and alternating T-recesses, whereby two tiles join together by the T-recesses of a first tile receiving respective T-lugs of a second tile, and the support surface supporting footwear remote from the second land to avoid scuffing against the joined T-lugs and T-recesses which resist separation of adjacent tiles during use.

A carpet tile assembly which resists lateral movement and a process of producing the same are disclosed, the carpet tiles having a tufted carpet layer or similar surface and a second layer of elastomeric material vulcanized to the carpet layer. The second layer has a plurality of protrusions formed therein and a plurality of spikes on the protrusions which together engage a base layer which may be either a mirror image of the second layer or a needle-punched or felt-like fiber mat to resist lateral movement of the applied tiles. The process involves tufting carpet yarn into a substrate and then vulcanizing the second, elastomeric or resilient layer to the substrate. In the vulcanization process, heat and pressure are applied to soften the elastomeric material and force the material through cavities in a perforated sheet to form the protrusions.
