Systems provide a chassis housing one or more Information Handling Systems (IHSs). A control layer of the chassis includes a power supply for use both in the control layer of the chassis and in a processing layer of the chassis. The control layer also includes a motherboard with CPUs coupled to the processing layer via a PCIe switch fabric. The processing layer includes one or more replaceable I/O modules installed in a front compartment. The processing layer also includes a hardware accelerator sled installed in a central compartment of the processing layer, where the hardware accelerator sled is replaceable via a rear of the processing layer. A block of cooling fans is installed in a rear compartment of the processing layer, where the fans provide airflow cooling to the I/O modules and hardware accelerator sled installed in the processing layer. In this configuration, cooling requirements are met for the chassis.

An information handling system includes a first set of components, a second set of components, and a hybrid cooling system. The hybrid cooling system includes a fan structure, a liquid cooling system, and a fan insert. The fan structure includes multiple cooling fans to provide air cooling to the first components of the information handling system. The liquid cooling system provides liquid cooling to one or more of the second components. The liquid cooling system includes a first liquid line routed through an empty fan cavity of the fan structure. The fan insert is located within the empty fan cavity and provides a seal against air-bypass and recirculation within the information handling system.

Systems are provided where a chassis houses an Information Handling System (IHS). The chassis includes a motherboard with one or more CPUs configured to operate as a root complex for a PCIe switch fabric that includes a plurality of PCIe devices of the IHS. The chassis also includes an I/O module providing I/O capabilities for the motherboard. The I/O module includes a network controller configured to allocate network bandwidth for use by a hardware accelerator sled installed in the chassis, unless an integrated network controller is detected as a component of a hardware accelerator baseboard installed in the hardware accelerator sled. The I/O module also includes a PCI switch configured to operate with the CPUs as the root complex of the PCIe switch fabric and further configured to operate with the hardware accelerator baseboard as the root complex of the PCIe switch fabric.

An information handling system may include an information handling resource, at least one fluidic conduit thermally coupled to the information handling resource and configured to convey a cooling liquid proximate to the information handling resource in order to cool the information handling resource, an air mover support infrastructure comprising a plurality of bays, each bay of the plurality of bays configured to receive an air mover for cooling components of the information handling system, and a liquid manifold sized and shaped to be received in at least one of the plurality of bays and received in a first bay of the plurality of bays and configured to enable at least one fluidic conduit to fluidically couple to an external cooling system, wherein the external cooling system is configured to deliver cooled cooling liquid to the information handling system, receive warmed cooling liquid from the information handling system, and cool the warmed cooling liquid.

A method of manufacturing a chassis that cools thermal energy generating components of an information handling system (IHS) includes: forming an enclosure with a chassis that has a base wall for provisioning a thermal energy generating component; forming one or more stiffeners each having one or more air channels formed transversely through for directing air proximate to the base wall; attaching the one or more stiffeners laterally across the base wall; and attaching a planar member that is horizontally on top of the one or more stiffeners for engaging one or more forward compute components on top of the planar member that substantially block air flow above the planar member to the thermal energy generating component. The one or more air channels eliminate thermal shadowing caused by thermal energy generating components provisioned in a rear area of the chassis.

A lightweight server (LWS) chassis includes a chassis base having structural configuration that enables placement of the LWS chassis in a nested, stacked configuration with a second LWS chassis placed atop the LWS chassis and a third LWS chassis placed below the LWS chassis. Multiple LWS chasses can be stacked in a vertical space whose height is less than a sum of individual heights of each of the multiple LWS chasses.

An information handling system (IHS) includes a lightweight server chassis having a surface that includes a plurality of slots formed within the chassis surface. Each slot is sized to receive a specific compute component of a plurality of different compute components that collectively provide a fully functional IHS. In one embodiment, at least one slot that is formed within the chassis surface is sized to receive a respective one of the more than one type of compute component of a plurality of different compute components. Thereby, an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) can flexibly ship at least portions of the IHS to an end user destination for possible downstream reconfiguration and assembly.

A method for structurally protecting an information handling system (IHS) for both shipment and operation includes: providing a lightweight server (LWS) chassis; providing a casing that is formed of structurally rigid material to protect the server chassis and any functional compute components inserted within the server chassis; inserting the LWS chassis into the casing; and fully enclosing the LWS chassis within the casing using sealable flaps of the casing such that the casing can be utilized as an external shipping carton in which the IHS is physically shipped to a destination.

An Information Handling System (IHS) includes a chassis having a base panel, a selected modular cover, and a latching structure. The base panel has an upper chassis surface to receive selected compute components and infrastructure components that vary in height desired for the fully assembled IHS or rack in which the IHS will be inserted. The selected modular cover can have peripheral sides of a vertical height to complement a vertical height of the lateral guides of the base panel to create either a first height enclosure of a first height to house compute components of less than the first height or a second height enclosure of a second height to house compute components of less than the second height but greater than the first height. The latching structure is formed between the peripheral sides of the selected one of the first and second modular cover and the lateral guides of the base panel.

An information handling system (IHS) includes a modularly-constructed chassis for receiving varying sizes of snap-in compute components for assembly of the IHS. The modularly-constructed chassis includes a base panel having a chassis surface that includes more than one engagement feature formed within the chassis surface and a selected at least one of a first tray that is sized to receive a first compute component of a first size and a second tray that is sized to receive a second compute component of a second size. The first and second trays have a bottom surface with more than one complementary engagement feature formed within the bottom surface to snap-in corresponding engagement features of the base panel. The IHS includes one or more connecting cabling interconnecting the at least two compute components.
