The process for the development of color photographic images with an aqueous alkaline color developer mixture comprising methyl-p-dialkylaminoaniline derivates. The process provides brilliant color photographic images avoiding coloration of the support and color fog even when processing at high temperatures.

Traces of free inhibitors for the development of silver halide which might be present as impurities of inhibitor releasing compounds or which might be prematurely released therefrom because of insufficient stability thereof during storage of the photographic material are scavenged by compounds which are capable of binding free inhibitors at pH values below 7 but to a much less extent at pH values higher than 9.

In a color photographic material wherein by color development there are produced either non-diffusing image dyes or diffusing image dyes (the latter being transferred to an image-receiving layer) the color development is controlled by means of non-diffusing thioether compounds which on color development release a diffusing mercapto compound but do not themselves form a dye. The mercapto compound inhibits the development of the silver halide and the thioether compound has the formula ##STR1## R.sub.1 =hydrogen or alkyl with 1-3 carbon atoms R.sub.2 =alkyl with up to 22 carbon atoms the group --S--Y is split off during color development and forms a mercaptane, e.g. 5-mercapto-1-phenyltetrazole, which inhibits the development.

Photographic dye diffusion transfer process

Useful non-diffusible dye-giving compounds for the photographic dye diffusion transfer process are dye sulfonamides derived from enolamines or endiamines or tautomers thereof. The dye-giving compounds are oxidized by developer oxidation products and subsequently split under the conditions of alkaline development to release diffusible dyes. The compounds are of the following formula ##STR1## in which X is a dye moiety and R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 have meanings given hereinafter.

Non-diffusible dye-providing components which may be used in association with a silver halide emulsion layer and on development yield diffusible yellow dyes of improved light fastness are cyanalkyl aminoazo dyes of the formula ##STR1## in which A.sup.1 represents oxidizable carrier residue;

Non-diffusible thioether compounds capable of releasing, on reaction with color developer oxidation compounds, a diffusible silver halide development inhibitor without at the same time forming permanent dyes to any substantial extent are characterized by containing a group of the formula ##STR1## or its tautomeric form, wherein Z.sup.1 represents an electron attracting substituent and X represents an aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic group that if released together with the sulfur atom, forms a diffusible silver halide development inhibiting mercaptane.

Non-diffusible silver halide development inhibitor releasing thioether compounds in which a color development does not give rise to a substantial formation of permanent dyes are 1,2,5'-.DELTA..sup.2 -thiadiazoline-1,1-dioxide derivatives of the following formula or its tautomeric (.DELTA..sup.3) form: ##STR1## in which X represents an aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic group such that when it is split off together with the sulphur atom of the thioether bridge, it forms a diffusible mercapto compound capable of inhibiting the development of the silver halide;

Suitable masking compounds for masking the undesired color side densities of image dyes produced from color couplers are those of the following formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 represents hydrogen or one or more substituents such as halogen, alkyl, aryl, a heterocyclic group alkoxy, hydroxyl, amino, acylamino, sulfo, sulfonyl, carboxyl or carbamyl or condensed carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring.

Color photographic material with improved color reproduction

Non-diffusible dye-providing compounds for the dye diffusion transfer process yielding yellow to red color images of wanted absorption characteristics and improved light fastness correspond to the formula

Dye diffusion transfer employing pyridine azo dye

Positive images including color images are obtained by imagewise exposure and development of a material which comprises at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer which contains an unfogged direct-positive silver halide emulsion, when the development is carried out in the presence of a fogging agent of the formula ##STR1## wherein the symbols are defined as hereinafter. The fogging agent is preferably contained in a layer of the material and more preferably in the unfogged direct-positive silver halide emulsion layer. For the production of color instant images the material may also contain non-diffusible color providing compounds capable in their oxidized form of being split under alkaline photographic development conditions to release diffusible dyes.

Process for the production of direct-positive photographic images

In the photographic dye-diffusion transfer process use is made of dye-giving compounds, which are non diffusing in photographic binder layers, and which during development if oxidized imagewise in accordance with the silver halide developed are split owing to the alkali of the developer composition to release diffusing dyes, which are transferred to an image-receiving layer. The dye-giving compounds have the formula

High edge effects and interimage effects are provided in a color-photographic material by the use of new DIR-compounds. These are of the formula ##STR1## wherein X represents together with the sulfur atom a development inhibiting group;

Light sensitive photographic material

A color photographic material having a silver halide emulsion layer and containing a thioether compound which is reactable on chromogenic development thereby releasing a diffusible substance which inhibits the development of the silver halide. The thioether compound is a homophthalimide containing a removable mercapto group containing moiety in the 4-position and its nitrogen in the 2-position atom being a tertiary nitrogen.
