An induction RF fluorescent lamp having a bulbous vitreous portion of the induction RF fluorescent light bulb including a lamp envelope filled with a working gas mixture. The lamp includes a power coupler and an electronic ballast. A first metallic structure is attached to a cavity wall and extends outwardly radially therefrom and within the lamp envelope outside a re-entrant cavity including mercury. The first metallic structure is mounted within the lamp envelope and adapted to absorb power from the electric field and induce discharge during a turn-on phase of the induction RF fluorescent lamp in a manner sufficient to rapidly heat and vaporize the mercury and promote rapid luminous development during the turn-on phase of the induction RF fluorescent lamp.

A dimmable induction RF fluorescent light bulb comprising a power coupler with reduced extraneous electromagnetic radiation wherein a dimming facility utilizes burst-mode dimming that periodically interrupts the high frequency voltage and current to the power coupler with an off period and an on period in order to reduce the power being delivered to the power coupler wherein the off period is shorter than the time required for an electron density of the discharge within the lamp envelope to substantially decrease.

There is described an EHID lamp that comprises a field applicator, a means for coupling RF power to the field applicator, and a discharge vessel; the discharge vessel being disposed within the field applicator and containing a discharge medium; the field applicator being comprised of a solid, transparent or translucent dielectric material and having an optical control surface and a conductive coating that substantially covers its external surfaces. By combining functions served by otherwise individual components, the EHID lamp of this invention has the potential for reducing parts count, improving RF coupling to the plasma, reducing shadowing, and improving reliability.

A ceramic discharge lamp and a method of making the lamp includes a ceramic discharge chamber with two concave parts that are attached to each other at a seam, and a ceramic reflector directly attached to an exterior surface of the discharge chamber at the seam, or directly attached to a ceramic capillary that is attached to one of the two concave parts. The lamp finds particular application where focused light is required, such as injection of light into a fiber optic device. The lamp can be very small and has an advantage that the discharge chamber is isolated from the reflective surfaces so that the optically active parts of the reflector are not covered with salt from the preferred metal halide lamp fill.

A novel metal halide reflector lamp is described wherein the reflector lamp has a passive optical element to scramble, color mix, and otherwise commingle the light emitted by the metal halide burner. The optical element is placed close to the radiating plasma volume to intercept a large solid angle. Preferably, the optical element substantially intercepts the emitted light within a solid angle that has its vertex at the center of the discharge volume of the burner and is subtended by the open end of the reflector. The optical element can be designed to scatter, reflect or refract the light emanating in this solid angle which otherwise would not impinge on the primary optical control surface of the reflector.
