A biflow filter drier has a pair of flapper-type check valve assemblies for directing fluid flow unidirectionally through a centrally supported molded desiccant core. Each check valve assembly is a three part structure spot welded into a unitary assembly comprising a centering support plate, a core support cup and an intermediate flapper valve plate. Two flapper valves are formed from the valve plate and comprise the check valves covering valve openings in the suport plate and support cup. The material which formed the central opening in the support plate is bent at an angle to the support plate and provides an overtravel stop for the check valve. An angled surface of the core support cup provides an overtravel stop for the second check valve.

Biflow filter drier

An impact and vibration resistent receiver dehydrator for use in a refrigeration or air conditioning system includes a body (10) enclosing a desiccant core (24). The core includes a projection (32) at a first end and a flat face (38) at a second end. The projection is nested in a resilient core support (50) which in turn is supported by a spring loaded baffle plate (56). The resilient core support is positioned in a recess (58) in the baffle plate. The baffle plate includes a radially extending flange (60) which serves to hold the baffle plate and first end of the core in fixed position relative to the interior of said receiver dehydrator body. The face of the second end of the core is supported by a perforated disc (42). A compressible filter pad (46) is positioned between the disc and the core. The filter pad wraps around the edge (40) of the core and serves to space and cushion the core from the interior of the body. The resilient core support and baffle plate serve to distribute the force of impacts to the body and cushion the core at the first end. The filter pad also serves to catch any fragments of the core and prevent them from escaping from the receiver dehydrator in the event the core is fractured.

Shock resistant receiver dehydrator

A fluid indicator for viewing the condition of refrigerant flowing therethrough includes a brass body (12) having a cylindrical extending portion (26). The cylindrical extending portion includes a recess (30) bounded by a deflectable wall (28). An aperture (14) which includes a transparent glass pane (36) surrounded by a steel ring (38) is mounted in the recess and fixed therein by braze material. Tubes (16, 18) are brazeable into coupling portions (20, 22) of the body, and the fluid tight character of the indicator is unaffected despite failure to use a chill block, wet rag or other cooling device during the brazing operations.

Fluid indicator for refrigeration system

A filter dryer for refrigeration systems includes a generally tubular molded desiccant core therein. The central opening of the core is sealed and one end thereof supported by a forced-in plastic ball which itself is retained in a seat dimpled in the inlet baffle.

Filter dryer

A filter-drier block for use in refrigeration systems to filter and remove moisture from the refrigerant fluid, and the method of making the block. The block is comprised of granular adsorbent material bound together to form a rigid block by the use of phenolic resin and polyisocyanate binders and characterized by a low pressure drop for fluid passing through the block. The method of making the block includes the steps of mixing dry adsorbent granules with solutions of the two binders, blow molding the mixture into a block, curing the resins with an alkaline gas, purging the block of the gas by passing air through the block, and heating the block to drive off the solvents for the binders. The invention also includes a refrigeration system utilizing the block.

Filter block and method of making the same

A heat pump system having a filter-dryer unit located in the discharge line of the compressor provides unidirectional operation of the filter dryer in a bidirectional system. The relatively high water retention capacity of molecular sieve desiccant at elevated temperatures allows operation of the filter-dryer at the outlet of the compressor while internal baffles in the unit, a specially sized housing and a spring loaded desiccant support structure accommodate the relatively high fluid velocity and other conditions encountered in the discharge line.
