The embodiments described herein provide mechanism that allows an embedded router software image and an application to run in the user application memory space of a general purpose computer. A connection is established with an operating system device configured to route packets between the application and the software router and route, by the software router, network traffic to and from the application by way of the connection. The application may be connected to other applications in the user application memory space or connected to applications that are external to the general purpose computer.

The embodiments described herein provide mechanism that allows an embedded router software image to run in the user application memory space of a general purpose computer. An interface process is provided to receive and transmit packets between the user application memory space and the operating system's protected or kernel memory space of the general purpose computer. The interface process mimics or emulates any hardware interfaces that would be available to the router software when running on a dedicated embedded router device.

An apparatus for communicating data is provided that includes a cell site element associated with a base transceiver station and comprising a compression module that is operable to receive a plurality of bits associated with a communications flow, to inspect the bits, to determine whether one or more samples included in the flow should be suppressed, and to compress the samples. The cell site element is coupled to a back-up device that is operable to assume responsibility for active flows in a case where a primary device fails. Data is exchanged between the primary device and the back-up device, the data guiding the back-up device in how to process the active flows.

A first router receives an original IS-634 standard frame formatted message over an A-bis interface from a base transceiver station. The first router identifies header information bits in the message for compression. The first router suppresses selected ones of the identified header information bits and encapsulates the message into a packet. The second router reconstructs the selected ones of the header information bits that were suppressed by the first router. The second router regenerates the original IS-634 standard frame formatted message and transports the message to a base station controller over the A-bis interface.

A method for compressing data is provided that includes receiving a communications flow communicated by a mobile station and communicating with a proxy element in order to determine if an incoming packet is associated with an internet protocol (IP). The method also includes performing a mapping between a non-IP based protocol associated with the incoming packet and an IP protocol in cases where the incoming packet is non-IP based in order to generate an IP compatible packet to be processed by a forwarding path element and communicated to a next destination.

The present invention provides a method and system for directing a network boot. The method includes obtaining a bootstrap by a client, the client residing in a subnet; obtaining a configuration file by the bootstrap, where the configuration file comprises a map of subnets and their corresponding file servers; determining from the configuration file a file server corresponding to the client's subnet; and obtaining an operating system (OS) image from the corresponding local file server. The method and system provides a bootstrap which, when loaded onto a client, obtains a configuration file from the remote file server. The configuration file contains a map of the network's subnets and their corresponding local file servers. Using this configuration file, the bootstrap obtains an OS image from the local file server which services the subnet in which the client resides. In this manner, the client can perform a remote boot and have direct access to its local file server, promoting more efficient file transfers.

A data processing system and method are described for creating a virtual partition within an existing partition within a hard disk drive included within the system. A first master boot record is written which includes a partition. The partition defines a first file system to be utilized by the hard drive. A file is created within the partition. The first master boot record is temporarily overwritten with a second master boot record without altering the first file system. The second master boot record includes a designation of the file as a second partition. The second partition defines a second file system. The second partition is designated as the active partition. The data processing system is booted utilizing the second master boot record. The second partition is a virtual partition within the existing partition.
