An improved temperature-compensated optical grating device includes a temperature-compensating structure including a plurality of members that are selected and arranged to provide an effective coefficient of thermal expansion that is negative with respect to two mounting points for an optical fiber grating, wherein the improvement is achieved by making at least one of the members of the temperature-compensating structure from a material having a low coefficient of thermal expansion that decreases with increasing temperature and at least one other member having a high coefficient of thermal expansion that increases with increasing temperature.

Temperature-compensated optical grating device

A system for writing fiber gratings has a plurality of writing stations, each writing station including a fiber mounting fixture for receiving an optical fiber to be exposed to a beam from a laser. The system includes a data capture module for capturing data generated from the exposure of optical fibers in each of the writing stations, and a steering assembly for directing the laser beam to each of the plurality of writing stations in turn.

System and method for writing fiber gratings and other components

The present invention is related to the fabrication of a magnetic memory storage device consisting essentially of a head pad and a rigid information disk, which disk consists essentially of a rigid substrate having a coating of magnetic media on the surface thereof facing the head pad. More particularly, this invention is directed to a substrate for use in the disk. The substrate is selected from two different groups of glass-ceramics: the first group contains a sheet silicate as the predominant crystal phase; and the second group contains a chain silicate as the predominant crystal phase.

Magnetic memory storage devices

A method of growing sapphire crystals from the melt wherein a porous alumina raw material is used to replenish the melt during growth. The porous alumina is subjected to a high temperature, low pressure environment to remove adsorbed water and oxygen which, if allowed to enter the melt, would result in poor monocrystals. A sequence of steps is provided which allows a simultaneous outgassing of one charge of porous alumina and a continuous replenishing of the melt with porous alumina of a previously outgassed charge. The previously outgassed charge of alumina must be handled in a system devoid of water and oxygen to avoid readsorption of the impurities.
