A writing or drawing instrument including a writing tip (1) disposed at a front end of the writing instrument which can be brought into contact with a writing or drawing pad, a writing fluid reservoir (7) for supplying the writing tip (1) with writing fluid, and a writing fluid chamber (9) disposed between the writing tip (1) and the writing fluid reservoir (7). The writing fluid chamber (9) consists of a bubble of a flexible, inelastic material. The writing fluid chamber (9) is connected to the writing tip (1) on one side and is connected on the other side to a barrier (12). The barrier (12) is connected with the writing fluid reservoir (7) and can be opened in a controlled manner. When a lower fill level is reached in the writing fluid chamber (9), the barrier is briefly opened to fill the writing fluid chamber (9). During the filling of the writing fluid chamber (9), the volume of the writing fluid reservoir (7) is reduced in accordance with the consumption of the writing fluid.

Flow control for writing or drawing instrument

A technical pen, in particular for use in a drafting instrument such as a plotter, with a writing tube (4) fixed in the front end of a pen tip (1, 2, 3), into which a cleaning wire (5), fastened to the front end of a drop weight body (6), extends, has a device (20, 23, 24) for monitoring the writing fluid level in a buffer chamber (15) disposed between the front end of the inner bore (7) and the back end of the writing tube (4) as well as for activating a conveying means (25) for transporting writing fluid from the inner bore (7) into the buffer chamber (15) when the writing fluid has fallen below a pre-determined level. The buffer chamber (15) is formed centrally symmetrical in relation to the center axis of the writing tube (4) and its inner and outer boundary walls (16, 17) converge from the front to the back. The front area of the buffer chamber (15) is connected with the writing tube ( 4) and the inner bore (7), while its rear area is closed. At least the backwards converging sections of the boundary surfaces of the buffer chamber (15) are made of an electrically conducting material and are each connected with a contact (23, 24) of an electric control circuit. The contacts (23, 24) can be electrically connected by means of the electrically conducting writing fluid, and, when the electrical connection between the contacts (24, 25) is interrupted, the control circuit activates the conveying means (25).

A writing or drawing instrument wherein a housing (1), is provided with a writing point (2) and a writing fluid reservoir (3) within an interior space of the housing. A capillary pressure equalization system (5), that connects the reservoir with the ambient air, has a sensor (7) therein for reacting to the level of writing fluid (4) therein. A suction pump (11, 12) is connected with the writing fluid reservoir (3) through a semi-permeable membrane (10) which lets air through and is impermeable for writing fluid (4). The suction pump (11, 12) is activated by the sensor (7) in response to a level of writing fluid (4) in the pressure equalization system, and aspirates air from the reservoir so as to quickly reduce an overpressure condition.

A stylo pen tip with a drop weight body (7) which is located inside an inner bore (6) of a housing (1,1') connected with the writing fliud reservoir (16) and which has a cleaning wire (8) at its front end extending into the writing tube (2) supported on the front end of the housing (1, 1') has a drop weight safety (13) supported therein which is pivotable around the longitudinal axis of the housing (1,1') and which is in interlocking contact with the drop weight body (7), which can be moved back and forth axially in a limited way in relation to it. In its forward position the drop weight body (7) adjoins with its front end (10) a stop face (9) formed in the inner bore (6). The plane of the front end (10) of the drop weight body (7) and the plane of the stop face (9) are inclined towards each other. By turning of the drop weight body ( 7) the extension of the cleaning wire (8) beyond the front end of the writing tube (2) can be adjusted.

Method of regulating ink flow in automatic drafting pens of the type supporting a plurality of stylographic pens in parallel, including pumping ink from a reservoir into the writing pen capillary tubes, gauging the level of ink intermediate the reservoir and the capillary tubes and modifying said pumping as the gauged, actual level of ink flow may deviate from a desired level of ink flow. The method includes buffering of ink flow into the capillary tubes, so as to overcome the effects of inertia (when the pen is not writing), as well as the surge of ink flow under pumping pressure.

Method for regulating ink flow in drafting pens

An automatic drafting instrument of the type supporting a plurality of stylographic pens above a drafting surface. The instrument includes a reciprocating mechanism for lowering the pens from an upper rest position to a lower drafting position in contact with the drafting surface. The device is characterized by a vertically actuable and pivotable sealing element which engages the writing pen tip in its rest position and is actuable vertically downwardly and pivotably away from the pen as it is lowered to the writing surface.

A sealing element for an automatic drafting pen with a tubular tip wherein a reciprocating horizontal actuating means that acts through a linkage operates a horizontal slide that in one position permits the pen to contact the drafting surface and in a second position seals the pen with the horizontal slide.

Automatic drafting device of the type employing a tubular writing pen, particularly an adjustable sealing element which is used against the writing tip of the pen when the pen is in a retracted rest mode. The sealing element is laterally disengaged from the pen tip when the pen is an extended writing mode. The sealing element which may be in the form of an elastic spheroid prevents drying out of ink within the capillary channel when the pen is not in use.

Automatic drafting device of the type employing a tubular writing pen, particularly an adjustable sealing element which is used against the writing tip of the pen when the pen is in a retracted rest mode. The sealing element is laterally disengaged from the pen tip when the pen is an extended writing mode. The sealing element which may be in the form of an elastic spheroid prevents drying out of ink within the capillary channel when the pen is not in use. The blocking assembly is characterized by its ability both to lock the tubular writing pen in its rest position and to lock the sealing element in its laterally outward position so as to avoid interference with the pen during temporary moments of non-writing.

A tubular or stylus pen of the type comprising a cylindrical body provided with an axial inner bore, having at its front end a writing tube and an outer surface defining an ink equalizing chamber, further including a casing element with a portion receivably mounted upon the cylindrical body and adapted for sealing the ink equalizing chamber, wherein the improvement comprises a tubular extension upon the cylindrical body, extending rearwardly and connecting the cylindrical body and the ink supply chamber, the tubular extension together with the casing element defining means to allow the tubular extension to be moved forward to a limited extent within said casing element to thereby expose the ink equalizing chamber on the outer surface of the cylindrical body for cleaning without a complete disassembly of the pen.
