A head up display arrangement is for a motor vehicle having a human occupant. A light source emits a light field. An infrared camera detects infrared energy. A combiner is positioned and configured to reflect the light field such that the light field can be viewed by the human occupant as a virtual image. The combiner has a region configured to reflect infra-red energy emitted by a face of the occupant such that the infrared energy is received by the infrared camera.

Combiner head up display with separate infrared function

A motor vehicle includes a rearview camera capturing images of a scene behind the motor vehicle. An electronic processor receives the images captured by the camera. A virtual image projection arrangement is communicatively coupled to the electronic processor and presents a virtual image dependent upon the images captured by the camera. The virtual image is visible by a driver of the vehicle after being reflected by a windshield.

Rearview head up display

A motor vehicle includes a head up display projector producing a light field based upon image data such that the light field is reflected off of a windshield of the motor vehicle and is then visible to a driver of the motor vehicle as a virtual image. First means determines locations of physical objects visible to the driver through the windshield. Second means determines locations of eyes of the driver. An electronic processor receives first data indicative of the determined locations of the physical objects, and receives second data indicative of the determined locations of the eyes of the driver. The electronic processor produces the image data dependent upon the first data and the second data such that a symbol in the virtual image appears to be in a predetermined position relative to a selected one of the physical objects.

Head up display with symbols positioned to augment reality

A head up display arrangement for a motor vehicle includes a head up display projector including a lens with a polarizer. The head up display projector emits a linearly polarized light field via the lens. A windshield reflects the light field such that the reflected light field is visible to a human driver of the motor vehicle as a virtual image. The windshield includes an outer plastic layer sandwiched between a half-wave plate and an outer glass layer. An inner plastic layer is sandwiched between the half-wave plate and an inner glass layer.

A liquid crystal display arrangement for a motor vehicle includes a plurality of light emitting diodes positioned to backlight a liquid crystal display. A plurality of electrical conductors are each electrically connected to, and provide electrical power to, a different respective subset of the light emitting diodes. An electronic controller is electrically coupled to each of the conductors and individually controls conduction of electricity through each of the conductors to thereby change a brightness of at least one of the subsets of the light emitting diodes relative to a brightness of at least one other subset of the light emitting diodes during operation of the motor vehicle.

Adaptable backlight

A head-up display (HUD) uses reduced reflectivity projection optics to reduce the harmful effects of intense solar radiation on HUD components. In a HUD generally having a display, a mirror, and a combiner, an image is projected from the display to the combiner via the mirror. The reflectance of the mirror is reduced to prevent high thermal stress on HUD components. The light source is brighter than a conventional backlight, and thus compensates for the reduction in the reflectance of the mirror. Reduced mirror reflectance translates into a reduced thermal load on the display, lens, case, electronics, or wherever the solar radiation is directed.

Method and apparatus for attenuating solar flux in a head-up display

A vehicle trip odometer has a central shaft with both ends protruding for coupling of either end or both ends with other odometers. A total distance odometer likewise has both ends available for coupling to a trip odometer. Thus several arrangements of counter mechanisms are possible with a single design of trip and total odometers. Two trip odometers are serially driven by one end of the total odometer, or are each driven at opposite ends of the total odometer. A molded coupler connects shaft ends for joining adjacent odometers. Each shaft end has a flat for positive rotational drive of a coupler with a mating recess.

Multiple counter assembly

A mechanical counter having number wheels rotatably mounted on a shaft with interleaved pinion carriers has a drive gear at one end fixed to the shaft and an end wheel rotatably mounted at the other end and retained by a washer press fit on the shaft. The end wheel has a cavity in its outboard side for receiving the washer, the cavity depth being greater than the washer thickness. The washer is installed by a press tool having a flat surface which engages both the washer and the outboard side of the end wheel to simultaneously advance the washer and seat the parts on the shaft. Then the washer and the bottom of the cavity are spaced by an amount providing the end play.

Stacked assembly with preset end play and assembly method

A transmission shift position indicator has a rotatable drum with a cam track formed in the outer periphery thereof. A cam follower is disposed in the cam track and operatively connected to a housing through a base portion for linear movement thereon in response to rotation of the drum. The base portion has a pointer connected thereto which is alignable with indicia imprinted on the housing to indicate the selected transmission operating condition. The cam track has portions thereof formed oblique to the longitudinal axis of the drum which cooperate with the follower to cause the linear movement of the base portion and circumferential portion transverse to the longitudinal axis interconnected by adjacent oblique portions for permitting the pointer to dwell at selected indicia position during rotation of the drum.
