The invention provides for processes to produce elastomeric compositions, the processes including contacting at least one elastomer with a processing aid, wherein the processing aid includes the reaction product of at least one functionalized polymer having at least one anhydride group contacted with at least one polyamine, wherein the at least one polyamine includes at least one primary amine. The invention also provides for articles such as innerliners for tires produced from the aforementioned elastomeric compositions.

Processing aids for elastomeric compositions

The invention provides for processes to produce elastomeric compositions, the processes including contacting at least one elastomer with a processing aid, wherein the processing aid comprises at least one functionalized polymer having at least one halogen group. The invention also provides for articles such as innerliners for tires produced from the aforementioned elastomeric compositions.

The composition comprises a halogenated interpolymer of a Cto Cisoolefin and from 3 to 20 weight percent alkylstyrene and comprising from 0.2 to 2 mole percent haloalkylstyrene, a Mooney viscosity less than 27, a number average molecular weight less than 270,000, a weight average molecular weight less than 470,000, a z-average molecular weight less than 700,000, and a branching index (g') from 0.4 to 1.1. Also disclosed are a method of making a cured, filled rubber article, comprising compounding the elastomeric composition with filler and curative, processing the compounded composition to form a shape of the article, and curing the composition to obtain the article in the formed shape, as well as a tire comprising an innerliner made by the method.

Processable filled, curable halogenated isoolefin elastomers

The present invention provides an elastomeric composition processable in a curable, filled rubber formulation. The composition comprises a halogenated interpolymer of a Cto Cisoolefin and from 3 to 20 weight percent alkylstyrene and comprising from 0.2 to 2 mole percent haloalkylstyrene, a Mooney viscosity less than 37, a number average molecular weight less than 270,000, a weight average molecular weight less than 470,000, a z-average molecular weight less than 700,000, and a branching index (g') from 0.4 to 1.1. Also disclosed are a method of making a cured, filled rubber article, comprising compounding the elastomeric composition with filler and curative, processing the compounded composition to form a shape of the article, and curing the composition to obtain the article in the formed shape, as well as a tire comprising an innerliner made by the method.

According to the invention, a processing aid is used to improve processing in a green (uncured) rubber composition, such as in downstream in-plant processing of an innerliner compound, and maintaining, or more preferably, reducing the air permeability of the cured composition, e.g., innerliner compound. In embodiments, another of the advantages of the present invention is that the processing aid according to the invention can be used in very low levels relative to the other processing aids and oils.

Air barrier composition for innerliners

According to the invention, a processing aid is used to improve processing in a green (uncured) rubber composition, such as in downstream in-plant processing of an innertube compound, and maintaining, or more preferably, reducing the air permeability of the cured composition, e.g., innertube compound. In embodiments, another of the advantages of the present invention is that the processing aid according to the invention can be used in addition to or as a replacement for the other processing aids and oils.

Air barrier composition for innertubes

The present invention relates to select elastomeric blends including at least one halogenated random copolymer. In particular, the present invention relates to compositions including at least one halogenated random copolymer of isobutylene and methylstyrene, preferably para-methylstyrene; wherein the at least one halogenated random copolymer includes at least 9.0 wt % methylstyrene, preferably para-methylstyrene, based upon the weight of the at least one halogenated random copolymer; and at least one general purpose rubber. The invention also relates to articles made from these compositions and processes for making the same.

Select elastomeric blends and their use in articles

A composition suitable for an air barrier such as an automotive tire innertube, innerliner, and aircraft tire innertube or innerliner, curing bladders, and other pneumatic devices is disclosed. The composition comprises an elastomer, a processing oil, and a grafted resin component.

Elastomeric blend for air barriers comprising grafted resin components

The invention relates to novel air barriers made from elastomeric compositions. In particular, the invention relates to novel air barriers such as innerliners, air sleeves, and innertubes made from novel Cto Cisoolefin based polymers with new sequence distributions or that are substantially free of long chain branching.

Elastomeric compositions, air barriers, and processes for the making the same

Transparent and colorable elastomeric compositions are provided. The transparent elastomeric compositions can be covulcanized with rubbers such as polybutadiene, polyisoprene, styrene-butadiene rubber, styrene-isoprene-butadiene rubber, isoprene-butadiene rubber, or natural rubber and polybutene processing oil. The colorable rubber compositions have sufficient properties to function as a reinforcing member in a shoe sole or automobile tire. Preferably, both the transparent and colorable elastomeric compositions include at least one copolymer of a Cto Cisoolefin and a p-methylstyrene, silica and a high cis-polybutadiene rubber.

Colorable elastomeric composition

The present invention is a composition including an isobutylene-based copolymer and polybutene. The copolymers may be mixed with an exfoliating compound and clay, the entire composition forming a nanocomposite. The clay may or may not have an additional exfoliating treatment present prior to mixing with the interpolymer. The composition of the invention has improved air barrier properties and processing properties, and is suitable as an air barrier. One embodiment of the invention is an elastomeric composition including at least one random copolymer of at least a Cto Cisomonoolefin derived unit, at least one filler, and polybutene oil having a number average molecular weight greater than 400. The copolymer may be selected from a halogenated poly(isobutylene-co-p-methylstyrene), a halogenated star-branched butyl rubber, or a halogenated butyl rubber, and mixtures thereof.

Elastomeric composition

The present invention includes elastomeric compositions of BIMS elastomers suitable for abrasion resistant, high traction and/or air barrier articles. The compositions and articles made from those compositions of the invention can be described in any number of embodiments. In one embodiment, the composition suitable for an abrasion resistant article includes from 5 to 100 phr of a terpolymer of Cto Cisoolefin derived units, p-alkylstyrene derived units and p-bromomethylstyrene derived units; at least one filler such as carbon black, silica, precipitated silica, clay, or combinations thereof, and from 0.1 to 3 phr of at least one thiourea. The composition can also include from 5 to 80 phr of at least one elastomer selected from natural rubbers, polyisoprene rubber, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), polybutadiene rubber, isoprene butadiene rubber (IBR), styrene-isoprene-butadiene rubber (SIBR), butyl rubber, halogenated butyl rubber, butadiene-acrylonitrile-styrene rubber (SNBR), and mixtures thereof. The composition can be cured by using one or a combination of curatives known in the rubber industry. For example, the composition may include from 0.1 to 10 phr of at least one of a peroxide, sulfur, a metal oxide, or a combination thereof. In a further embodiment, the thiourea is present from 0.2 to 1.5 phr in the composition.

Abrasion resistant elastomeric compositions

The present invention includes compositions suitable for tire treads or sidewalls and other articles where abrasion resistance and flexibility are desirable. The invention includes a tire tread or sidewall made by combining a filler; a sulfur cure system; optionally at least one secondary rubber; and at least one halogenated terpolymer of Cto Cisoolefin derived units, Cto Cmultiolefin derived units, and p-alkylstyrene derived units. Examples of suitable fillers include carbon black, silica, and combinations thereof. The present invention also includes a method of producing an elastomeric terpolymer composition comprising combining in a diluent Cto Cisoolefin monomers, Cto Cmultiolefin monomers, and p-alkylstyrene monomers in the presence of a Lewis acid and at least one initiator to produce the terpolymer. Examples of suitable initiators include cumyl compounds and or halogenated organic compounds, especially secondary or tertiary halogenated compounds such as, for example, t-butylchloride, 2-acetyl-2-phenylpropane (cumyl acetate), 2-methoxy 2-phenyl propane (cumylmethyl-ether), 1,4-di(2-methoxy-2-propyl)benzene (di(cumylmethyl ether)); the cumyl halides, particularly the chlorides, such as, for example 2-chloro-2-phenylpropane, cumyl chloride (1-chloro-1-methylethyl)benzene), 1,4-di(2-chloro-2-propyl)benzene (di(cumylchloride)), and 1,3,5-tri(2-chloro-2-propyl)benzene (tri(cumylchloride)); the aliphatic halides, particularly the chlorides, such as, for example, 2-chloro-2,4,4-trimethylpentane (TMPCl), and 2-bromo-2,4,4-trimethylpentane (TMPBr).

Elastomeric compositions

The present invention includes elastomeric compositions of BIMS elastomers suitable for abrasion resistant, high traction and/or barrier articles. The compositions and articles made from those compositions of the inventions can be described in any number of embodiments. In one embodiment, the composition suitable for an abrasion resistant article includes from 5 to 100 phr of a terpolymer of Cto Cisoolefin derived units, p-alkylstyrene derived units and p-bromomehtylstyrene derived units; at least one filler such as carbon black, silica, precipitated silica, clay, or combinations thereof; and from 0.1 to 3 phr of at least one thiourea. The composition can also include from 5 to 80 phr of at least one elastomer selected from natural rubbers, polyisoprene rubber, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), polybutadiene rubber, isoprene butadiene rubber (IBR), styrene-isoprene-butadiene rubber (SIBR), butyl rubber, halogenated butyl rubber, butadiene-acrylonitrile-styrene rubber (SNBR), and mixtures thereof The composition can be cured by using one or a combination of curatives known in the rubber industry. For example, the composition may include from 0.1 to 10 phr of at least one of a peroxide, sulfur, a metal oxide, or a combination thereof. In a further embodiment, the thiourea is present from 0.2 to 1.5 phr in the composition.
