A coating system includes a clear coat layer and a sealant. The clear coat layer is formed from a clear coat composition that comprises a crosslinkable carbamate-functional resin and an aminoplast. Optionally, the coating system further includes a sub-clear coat layer. The sealant is bonded to the clear coat layer opposite the sub-clear coat layer. Optionally, the coating system further includes a tie coat layer and that is disposed between the sealant and the clear coat layer. An adhesion promoter is present in the clear coat composition in an amount of less than or equal to about 3% by weight based on the total weight of resin solids of the clear coat composition. Further, the adhesion promoter is present in at least one of the sub-clear coat composition and the tie coat composition in an amount sufficient to increase adhesion between the clear coat layer and the sealant.

A method of curing a coating composition and a method of forming a cured coating on an automobile component are provided. The coating composition comprises a radical polymerizable compound and an organoborane-amine complex having an organoborane initiator, an amine blocking agent, and water. The method of curing the coating composition comprises the steps of combining the organoborane-amine complex, the radical polymerizable compound, and water to form the coating composition. Carbon dioxide is introduced into the coating composition or into a composition including at least one of the organoborane-amine complex, the radical polymerizable compound, and water prior to forming the coating composition. Carbonic acid is formed in situ within the coating composition through reaction of the water and carbon dioxide. The organoborane-amine complex is decomplexed with the carbonic acid thereby separating the organoborane initiator and the amine blocking agent. The radical polymerizable compound is polymerized using the organoborane initiator in the presence of oxygen.

An oligomer is made by capping a uretdione compound of structure with a compound (II) having an active hydrogen and a carbamate or cyclic carbonate group under conditions in which the isocyanate groups but not the uretdione group react. The product (III) is either reacted with a reactant having at least two active hydrogens under reaction conditions that cleave the uretdione ring, after which any cyclic carbonate groups may be converted to carbamate groups, or a product (III) having cyclic carbonate groups is reacted with ammonia or primary amine to provide uretdione with a hydroxy carbamate group that is then self-condensed under uretdione ring-opening conditions. A curable coating composition comprises the oligomer; a coated article is prepared by applying a layer of the curable coating composition and curing the applied layer.

Methods of making oligomers, coating compositions containing them, and coated articles

A coating composition comprises a first copolymer and a second copolymer. The first copolymer has at least one linear polymer strand having a weight average molecular weight of at least 1,500 Daltons and functionality X with an equivalent weight of no more than 500. The second copolymer has at least one linear polymer strand having a weight average molecular weight of at least 1,500 Daltons and functionality X' with an equivalent weight of no more than 1,500. The coating composition is free of gloss flattening agents, yet still produces a cured film having a low gloss of less than 70 gloss units at an angle of incidence of 60&#xb0;, as measured according to ASTM D 2457.

Coating composition and cured film formed therefrom

A curable coating composition includes a uretdione compound having one uretdione group and having a plurality of functional groups selected from crosslinkable groups and groups that modify a coating property. The disclosed coating compositions include those having a binder component having a plurality of active hydrogen-containing groups. When the uretdione compound has a functional group that is a crosslinkable group, the coating composition further includes a crosslinker that has a plurality of crosslinking groups reactive under curing conditions with the crosslinkable group. Also disclosed is a method of making the curable coating composition, including preparing the uretdione compound having one uretdione group and having at least one further functional group.

Disclosed is a carbamate functional silica, comprising repeating units: wherein R is H or an alkyl group of from 1 to 50 carbon atoms and n is a number from 1 to 100. Also disclosed is a functional silica comprising repeating units: wherein R is an alkyl group of from 1 to 50 carbon atoms, n is from 1 to 100, Rand Rmay be the same or different and are at least one of a hydrocarbon group comprising from 1 to 100 carbon atoms with the proviso that at least one of Rand Ris not hydrogen. In one embodiment, Rand Rare hydrogen or the residual of an aminoplast polymer, an alkylating alcohol, or the like. Methods for making the disclosed functional silicas and coating compositions comprising the same are also provided.

Carbamate functional silica compounds and methods of making and use thereof

A compound, oligomer, or polymer having a functional group of formula (I) wherein R is a group having 1 to 12 carbons and optionally including one or more heteroatoms selected from oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur is useful in curable compositions having active hydrogen functional groups reactive with group (I). The functional groups of formula (I) and active hydrogen functional groups may be part of the same material or different materials. In some embodiments a filler is surface modified to have a functional group of formula (I). Also disclosed is a method of making a material having a functional group of formula (I).

Curable alkoxycarbonylamino compositions, coatings, and methods

The present invention is an adhesion promoter, a coating composition containing the adhesion promoter and a method for preparing the adhesion promoter and coating. The adhesion promoter of the present invention is an olefin based polymer prepared by reacting a hydroxy functional olefin polymer with a compound reactive with hydroxy functionality to provide functionality on the olefin polymer that is inert to reaction with a principal resin or crosslinking resin in a coating composition.

Coating composition for adhesion to olefinic substrates

A curable coating composition includes a plasticizing component. The plasticizing component includes an isocyanurate core and at least one low surface tension group pending from the isocyanurate core. The low surface tension group may be a) a fatty chain includes at least 6 carbon atoms, b) a silicon-containing group having at least 1 silicon atom, c) a fluorocarbon, and combinations thereof. The low surface tension group may have cross-linkable functional groups pending therefrom. In addition to the plasticizing component, the curable coating composition further includes a resin component and a crosslinking agent that is reactive with the resin component. The curable coating composition including the plasticizing component is capable of forming a cured film that has resistance to both cracking and etching that, to date, has not been achieved with known plasticizing components.

Disclosed is a carbamate functional reactive polymer composition, comprising an acrylic resin (a') comprising a functional group (F) that is at least one of a primary carbamate group, a primary hydroxyl group, a secondary hydroxyl group, and mixtures thereof, and a nonvolatile solvent (b&#x2032;) that is not a crystalline solid at 75&#xb0; C. but is a fluid solid at a temperature of free radical polymerization and comprises (i) four or more isomers, and (ii) at least two reactive functional groups (F) that are selected from primary carbamate, primary hydroxyl, and secondary hydroxyl, wherein no more than 10% of the sum of functional groups (F) and (F) are primary hydroxyl groups and at least 60% of the sum of functional groups (F) and (F) are primary carbamate groups. Disclosed is a method of making reduced VOC polymers and coating compositions containing such polymers. Provided is a mixture (I) comprising a reactant mixture (a) of polymerizable components and a nonvolatile solvent (b) that (i) is not a crystalline solid at 25&#xb0; C., (ii) is nonvolatile, (iii) comprises at least one functional group (F) and (iv) is a fluid solid. Reactant mixture (a) is polymerized to provide a polymer (a'). The at least one functional group (F) of nonvolatile solvent (b) is reacted with one or more reactants (e) to obtain a nonvolatile solvent (b&#x2032;) comprising at least two functional groups (F). Obtained is a mixture (II) comprising polymer (a&#x2032;) in nonvolatile solvent (b&#x2032;) comprising at least two functional groups (F). The at least one functional group (F) is substantially nonreactive: (1) with the components of reactive mixture (a), (2) under the polymerization conditions which polymerize reactant mixture (a), and (3) with polymer (a&#x2032;).

Disclosed is a method of making an environmentally durable material, the method requiring providing a material comprising at least one functional group F, and subjecting the material to a free radical source such that substantially all functional groups Fare eliminated but the material is not polymerized. In one embodiment, the functional group Fis at least one of a nonaromatic carbon-carbon double bond, a hydrogen atom alpha to an aromatic ring, a hydrogen atom alpha to a carbon-carbon double bond, or a hydrogen atom attached to a tertiary substituted carbon. In another embodiment, functional group Fis present in the material as a contaminant. In one exemplary embodiment, the material comprises from 0.05 to less than 15% by weight of functional group F, based on the total weight of the material.
