An adaptive crash structure of a vehicle body or chassis of a motor vehicle includes a first metal casting and a second metal casting. A deformation element in the form of a metal casting for absorbing energy interconnects and forms with the first and second metal castings a single piece construction through a casting process. The deformation element is comprised of a plurality of funnel-shaped wedge bodies which are disposed in succession, with neighboring wedge bodies being connected through intervention of a predetermined breaking web. Each wedge body is defined by a diameter, wherein the diameters of the wedge bodies are sized to allow the wedge bodies to move telescopically into one another when a limit stress is reached and the predetermined breaking webs rupture so as to effect a tight intergrip of the telescoping wedge bodies in a self-locking manner.

Adaptive crash structure for a vehicle body or chassis of a motor vehicle

An exhaust system used for a motor vehicle and extending between an exhaust-generating internal combustion engine and an exhaust pipe for release of exhaust into the surrounding environment, includes a three-way catalytic converter disposed in proximity of the combustion engine, a NO -adsorber disposed upstream of the exhaust pipe, and an exhaust line, which extends between the catalytic converter and the NO -adsorber, for conducting exhaust. The exhaust line includes an inner tube, an outer tube in spaced-apart surrounding relationship to the inner tube to define a space, and a separation tube received in the space, to thereby define between the inner tube and the separation tube an inner annular gap for conducting exhaust, and between the outer tube and the separation tube an outer annular gap for conducting a coolant. A shut-off device is integrated in the inner tube for regulating the flow of exhaust through the inner tube.

Exhaust system for a motor vehicle

An arrangement for treating exhaust emitted from an Otto engine with direct fuel injection, includes an engine-proximate catalytic converter and a NO adsorber which is linked to the catalytic converter by an exhaust pipe. An outer tube with a flexible length portion in the form of a metallic bellows surrounds the exhaust pipe at formation of a circumferential gap therebetween. Provided in the gap is a metal powder which releases or adsorbs hydrogen gas in dependence on a temperature in the gap, wherein the gap is evacuated to provide a heat-insulating atmosphere.
