Method and arrangement in a mobile unit

Apparatus, and an associated method, for adaptively selecting a paging area throughout which to page a mobile terminal. A record is maintained, indicative of the position where a mobile terminal was located when last-accessing the network infrastructure of a communication system in which the mobile terminal is operable. When a page is to be broadcast to the mobile terminal, the record is accessed, and the paging area throughout which the page is broadcast is adaptively selected responsive thereto.

Apparatus, and associated method, for adaptively selecting a paging area

A telecommunications system is disclosed for extending the range of at least two service networks having different specified signalling standards. The telecommunications system includes a radio-based access network which includes at least one port to each service network. The ports are connected to at least one base station in the access network. The access network also includes a radio-based access network part capable of connecting the base station to a radio unit in the access network. The radio unit is registered in one of the service networks, the so-called home network of the radio unit, and a signal carrier in the access network has a first terminal point in the radio unit and a second terminal point in a port which connects the access network with the home network. The port functions to combine the signal carrier in the access network with a signal carrier in the home network.

Method and arrangement relating to telecommunications systems

The disclosure describes a novel Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) method and system for determining the position of a first mobile radio terminal within an associated mobile radio system, which is based on Time of Arrival (TOA) measurements, including a plurality of radio base stations, measuring devices, network controller, and service node. The measuring devices are synchronized in otherwise unsynchronized radio base stations. The measuring devices measure TOA on demand and (optionally) Direction of Arrival (DOA), on a digital uplink time slot or on digital information on an analog uplink traffic channel in one or more radio base stations. The TOA and DOA information and the traffic channel number are reported to a Mobile Services Switching Center, which obtains the first mobile terminal's identity from the traffic channel number and sends the terminal identity and TOA and DOA measurement information to a Service Node. The Service Node calculates the position of the first mobile radio terminal using the TOA information (supplemented by the DOA information when available). A second mobile radio terminal is colocated on a mobile platform (auto, emergency vehicle, etc.) with one of the radio base stations, which can be moved into relatively close proximity with the first mobile radio terminal. Consequently, by moving one of the radio base stations close to the region of interest (near the first mobile radio terminal), the position determination accuracy is significantly improved.

Method and system for determining the position of mobile radio terminals

The present invention teaches a method, system, terminals and service node for geographically positioning a first mobile radio terminal (MS1) within a radio network (100) comprising unsynchronised radio base stations by using a plurality of second fixed radio terminals (MS2) whereby the positions of the radio base stations and the second fixed radio terminals are known. First and second radio terminals (MS1,MS2) measure the relative receive times between the timing signals downlink (113-118) received from at least three radio base stations (BS1,BS2,BS3) and the second fixed radio terminals (MS2)send them to a service node (107) in the network (100) using them for calculating the transmission time offsets of the timing signals downlink. Calculating the position of the first mobile radio terminal (MS1) is performed either in the service node (107) in the network (100) or in the terminal (MS1) itself, after respectively sending relative receive time measurements from the first mobile radio terminal (MS1) to the service node (107), or broadcasting transmission time offset values and known positions from the service node (107) to the first radio terminal (MS1) to be positioned.

Method and an arrangement relating to telecommunication systems

A radio communication system is disclosed comprising a Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) where mobile radio telephones communicate with at least one mobile services switching center via corresponding base stations and where a home location register is connected to the at least one mobile services switching center. A wide area paging system sends out paging signals from at least one paging system accessible to the at least one mobile services switching center. A plurality of mobile radio telephones register their whereabouts in the home location register each time they are switched on. A plurality of pagers are associated with but physically separate from the mobile telephones. The paging system is accessed by the mobile services switching center for performing a page to a called subscriber when the called subscriber's mobile radio telephone is in an off state or cannot be reached for other reasons. An incoming call to the mobile telephone is parked until the mobile telephone is switched on and registered with the home location register and the mobile services switching center parking the incoming call is informed of the active state of the mobile telephone and is provided with a roaming number. The mobile services switching center then calls the activated mobile telephone using a page over the cellular network and the mobile telephone answers the incoming call. If the mobile telephone is not switched on and does not register within a specified time after parking the incoming call, a time out will occur and disconnect the parked incoming call.

Method and apparatus for increasing the answering probability of calls

In a radio communication system including at least one radio base station and at least two telephones connected to a radio terminal, simultaneous multiple calls may be set up between the radio base station and the radio terminal. An adaptor connects the telephones to the radio terminal that is connected over a radio air-interface to the radio base station. For an outgoing call originating from one of the telephones, the adaptor senses when a particular telephone goes off-hook and signals this information to the radio base station via the radio terminal and a control channel of the radio air-interface. Then, a first traffic channel is set up between the radio base station and the radio terminal. The telephone that has gone off-hook is connected to the established traffic channel via an adaptor. Once a first traffic channel is established for a first call, signalling that a second call is to be set up may be transmitted across the first traffic channel without terminating the first call. The second call is then set up on a different traffic channel.

Method and an arrangement for conducting multiple calls simultaneously

A method of facilitating interchanging the use of a mobile station and a permanently wired telephone set includes providing the number of the permanently wired telephone set as a bar code near the telephone set. A bar code reader is connected to the mobile station for scanning the bar code for ordering of interchanging the mobile station and the permanently wired set without dialing the number on a keyset of the mobile station. A predetermined interchanging key on the keyset is designated and connected for ordering the interchanging. The interchange is initiated by scanning the bar code with the bar code reader and pressing the interchanging key.

A radio-associated telecommunications network (RLL) comprises a radio base station (BS2) and a radio station (MS1) having a control unit (AD1) which serves a first subscriber apparatus (AB1). A public switched telecommunications network (PSTN) having an exchange (VX2) serves a second subscriber apparatus (AB2), this network being connected to the radio base station (BS2). As the telephone receiver of the first subscriber apparatus (AB1) is lifted, an off-hook signal (HS) is sent to the control unit (AD1). This unit delivers to the radio station (MS1) a transmission signal (S2) and an address (B2). which points to the exchange (VX2). A signalling channel (ACC) to the radio base station (BS2) is set-up and the address (B2) is sent on this channel. The radio base station (BS2) sets-up a traffic channel (TCH1) to the radio station (MS1) and establishes a connection (CON1) to the exchange (VX2) with the aid of the address (B2). The exchange (VX2) sends a dial tone (RT) to the first subscriber apparatus (AB1), over the traffic channel (TCH1). A telephone number (NR2) to the second subscriber apparatus (AB2) is now dialled on the keypad of the subscriber apparatus (AB1) and the second subscriber apparatus (AB2) transmits the telephone number to the exchange (VX2) digit by digit via the traffic channel (TCH1). The exchange establishes a second connection (CON2) to the second subscriber apparatus (AB2), sends a ring signal (RS2) and receives an off-hook signal (HS2). This initiates combining of the connections (CON1, CON2) so that the subscriber apparatus (AB1, AB2) are able to communicate via the traffic channel (TCH1).

A mobile radio network includes a number of mobile radio systems, each having a mobile radio services switching center which conveys calls between a number of cordless subscribers and a public switched telephone network which is common to the mobile radio systems which convey calls between a number of cordless subscribers, and a public switched telephone network which is common to the mobile radio systems which convey calls between wire-connected subscribers and also to the cordless subscribers via the mobile radio switching centers. If a cordless subscriber has roamed from its home system to a visitor system, a call from a third system can be transferred generally over the home system and the public network to the subscriber. A service node is assigned to each of the mobile radio systems and each such node keeps an account of where the home subscribers of respective mobile radio systems are located and, in cooperation with other service nodes, can connect a call from a subscriber in the third mobile radio system to the roaming subscriber without needing to load the remaining systems. The system also includes corresponding connection procedures, a subscriber telephone set and a method of registration in the network.

Registration and connection in a communication network

A mobile telephone system has in a cell a base station and sub-stations which are connected to a mobile switching center. The mobile telephone system has control channels and frequencies which are time divided to traffic channels. Some of the frequencies are selected as identification frequencies. Each of the sub-stations is assigned a unique set of frequencies from among the identification frequencies and constantly transmit their respective frequency set. A mobile station connected to the base station listens to the identification frequencies and reports the strongest of these frequencies to the mobile switching center. The mobile switching center compares the reported frequencies with the unique set of frequencies, compares the reported signal strength with a threshold value and selects the nearest sub-station for handoff. The mobile switching center switches from the base station to a connection with the sub-section. The mobile station continues to listen to the identification frequencies and reports the signal strength on its connection. When the strength of the signals from the selected sub-station is low, the connection is switched back to the base station.

Thereafter, records in the loaded backup copy that have changed after the latest position dump before the crash are updated with information from the other home location register unit, the mirror copy of which is updated after the position dump.

Restoration of a home location register in a mobile radio system

A method and apparatus for reestablishing a call after a call has been disconnected or after the quality of the call has become bad is disclosed. A disconnected mobile station scans the signal strength of surrounding base stations and accesses the base station with the highest signal strength. The mobile station then initiates a new call back to a service node. The base station then assigns the mobile station a traffic channel and the service node reconnects the call. In addition, a method for reestablishing a call in any communication network after the call has been terminated in a normal fashion is disclosed.

Reestablishment

The present invention relates to a cellular mobile radio telephone system which incorporates an independent paging capability with an existing mobile telephone by taking advantage of call forwarding and redirecting features available on the telephone switching network. When a mobile telephone is set to an active or 'on' mode, calls are directed to that mobile telephone using the cellular paging channel and conventional cellular paging procedures. However, when the mobile telephone is set to a sleep mode and the power is switched off, the mobile switching center automatically forwards calls to the mobile to an independent paging system which transmits the call as a paging signal to a small pager associated with the mobile telephone. When the pager receives a page signal as a result of the forwarded call, the pager transmits a low-power signal to the mobile telephone which switches on the power of the mobile telephone. A predetermined time after forwarding the call to the paging system, the mobile switching center redirects the forwarded calls using redirecting procedures to the mobile telephone. By the time the call is redirected, the mobile station has been activated and can now receive the call directly. Because the active pager consumes much less power than the mobile telephone listening to a paging channel of the cellular system, setting the mobile telephone to the sleep mode results in considerably less battery drain. When the mobile is set to a page mode, the pager functions as a conventional paging device.
