The present invention provides certain 3-aryl-5,6-dihydro-1,4,2-oxathiazines and their oxides, useful for the long-term preservation of wood and composite wood materials against wood damaging and wood destroying materials. The present invention also provides compositions containing these 3-aryl-5,6-dihydro-1,4,2-oxathiazines and their oxides, and a suitable vehicle therefor. A method of preserving wood is also disclosed in which a fungicidally or bactericidally effective amount of the present 3-aryl-5,6-dihydro-1,4,2-oxathiazines and their oxides, are applied to the wood substrate to be protected.
