New photodynamic, topically-applicable medicaments and certain medical uses of such photodynamic medicaments for treatment of human or animal tissue are described, wherein a primary active component of such medicaments is a halogenated xanthene. The halogenated xanthenes constitute a family of potent photosensitizers that become photoactivated upon illumination of the treatment site with visible wavelengths of light. In preferred embodiments, such medicaments are used for treatment of a variety of conditions affecting the skin and related organs; the mouth and digestive tract and related organs; the urinary and reproductive tracts and related organs; the respiratory tract and related organs; various other internal or external tissue surfaces, such as tissue surfaces exposed during surgery; and for treatment of a variety of conditions related to microbial or parasitic infection. In another preferred embodiment, such medicaments are produced in various formulations including liquid, semisolid or aerosol delivery vehicles.

Topical medicaments and methods for photodynamic treatment of disease

New intracorporeal radiodense medicaments and certain medical uses and methods for use of such high energy phototherapeutic medicaments for treatment of human or animal tissue are described, wherein a primary active component of such medicaments is a halogenated xanthene or halogenated xanthene derivative. The halogenated xanthenes constitute a family of potent radiosensitizers that become photoactivated upon irradiation of the treatment site with ionizing radiation. In embodiments of the present invention, such medicaments are used for treatment of a variety of conditions affecting the skin and related organs, the mouth and digestive tract and related organs, the urinary and reproductive tracts and related organs, the respiratory tract and related organs, the circulatory system and related organs, the head and neck, the endocrine and lymphoreticular systems and related organs, various other tissues, such as connective tissues and various tissue surfaces exposed during surgery, as well as various tissues exhibiting microbial or parasitic infection. In another embodiment, such medicaments are produced in various formulations including liquid, semisolid, solid or aerosol delivery vehicles.

A method and apparatus for the treatment of a particular volume of material, plant or animal tissue including the steps of treating the material plant or animal tissue with at least one photo-active agent, wherein the particular volume of the material, plant or animal tissue retains at least a portion of the at least one photo-active agent, and then treating the particular volume of the material plant or animal tissue with light sufficient to promote a multi-photon excitation of at least one of the at least one photo-active agent retained in the particular volume of the material, plant or animal tissue, wherein the at least one photo-active agent becomes active in the particular volume of the material, plant or animal tissue.

Methods and apparatus for multi-photon photo-activation of therapeutic agents

A method for the imaging of a particular volume of plant or animal tissue, wherein the plant or animal tissue contains at least one photo-active molecular agent. The method comprises the steps of treating the particular volume of the plant or animal tissue with light sufficient to promote a simultaneous two-photon excitation of the photo-active molecular agent contained in the particular volume of the plant or animal tissue, photo-activating at least one of the at least one photo-active molecular agent in the particular volume of the plant or animal tissue, thereby producing at least one photo-activated molecular agent, wherein the at least one photo-activated molecular agent emits energy, detecting the energy emitted by the at least one photo-activated molecular agent, and producing a detected energy signal which is characteristic of the particular volume of plant or animal tissue. The present invention also provides a method for the imaging of a particular volume of material, wherein the material contains at least one photo-active molecular agent.

Methods for improved selectivity in photo-activation and detection of molecular diagnostic agents

Methods and apparatus directed to using modulation to substantially improve detection limits in optical imaging, and to substantially improve the performance of various optical imaging systems. In an illustrative embodiment, such modulation is achieved using a modulated light source, a modulation frequency reference, a detector, and a demodulator. The modulated light source may comprise a light source emitting an inherently modulated output; alternately, this modulated light source may comprise a separate optical modulator and a continuous wave, modulated, or pulsed light source configured so as to impose a modulation in the output of light source. Methods for imaging using such modulation are also disclosed.

There is also disclosed a method for the treatment of cancer in plant or animal tissue and a method for producing at least one photo-activated molecular agent in a particular volume of a material.

A high resolution ranging method is described utilizing a novel modulated waveform, hereafter referred to as coherent burst modulation. In the coherent burst method, high frequency modulation of an acoustic or electromagnetic transmitter, such as a laser, is performed at a modulation frequency. This modulation frequency is transmitted quasi-continuously in the form of interrupted bursts of radiation. Energy from the transmitter is directed onto a target, interacts with the target, and the returning energy is collected. The encoded burst pattern contained in the collected return signal is detected coherently by a receiver that is tuned so as to be principally sensitive to the modulation frequency. The receiver signal is processed to determine target range using both time-of-flight of the burst envelope and phase shift of the high frequency modulation. This approach effectively decouples the maximum unambiguous range and range resolution relationship of earlier methods, thereby allowing high precision ranging to be conducted at arbitrarily long distances using at least one burst of encoded energy. Performance of such method and apparatus is significantly improved through use of phase alternation methods that compensate for non-ideal behavior of the ranging apparatus or of the target and its environment. Such phase alternation methods may be achieved by varying the phase of the transmitter or receiver channels. Moreover, methods for reduction of potential uncertainty in absolute range measurement are taught that make use of coherent signal components at twice the nominal modulation frequency.

Method and apparatus for improved ranging

A method for the imaging of a particular volume of plant or animal tissue, wherein the plant or animal tissue contains at least one photo-active molecular agent. The method includes the steps of treating the particular volume of the plant or animal tissue with light sufficient to promote a simultaneous two-photon excitation of the photo-active molecular agent contained in the particular volume of the plant or animal tissue, photo-activating at least one of the at least one photo-active molecular agent in the particular volume of the plant or animal tissue, thereby producing at least one photo-activated molecular agent, wherein the at least one photo-activated molecular agent emits energy, detecting the energy emitted by the at least one photo-activated molecular agent, and producing a detected energy signal which is characteristic of the particular volume of plant or animal tissue. The present invention is also a method for the imaging of a particular volume of material, wherein the material contains at least one photo-active molecular agent.
