Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are described herein which utilizes and controls an electromagnetic energy beam steering apparatus. The electromagnetic energy beam steering apparatus uses directional properties of a Luneburg lens to receive RF energy from one or more points of the Luneburg lens and re-transmits the RF energy from a different point of the Luneburg lens to focus the RF energy in a desired direction. The electromagnetic energy beam steering apparatus may take a form of a passive repeater, an active repeater, or a multipath active repeater.

Synchronization of precision timing signals maintained by multiple communication networks is described. A precision timing signal may be generated based on the change in state of a plurality of processors. Synchronization of the precision timing signals may be facilitated by a computing device monitoring at least two communication networks. The computing device may generate time offsets that are derived from the precision timing signals associated with each communication network. The time offsets may be communicated by the computing devices to remote devices communicatively coupled to the computing device via a first communication network.

Precision digital chronography based on detected changes in state of a processor is described. The changes in state may be detected by another processor and an averaged time interval generated. A signal corresponding to the averaged time interval may be communicated to a distributed database and propagated to remote systems. Devices associated with the remote systems may adjust or set a device clock in accordance with the averaged time interval.

A precision timing signal may be generated based on the change in state of a plurality of processors. Synchronization of the precision timing signals may be facilitated by a computing device monitoring at least two communication networks. The computing device may generate time offsets that are derived from the precision timing signals associated with each communication network. The time offsets may be communicated by the computing devices to remote devices communicatively coupled to the computing device via a first communication network. The remote devices may adjust locally maintained application clocks based on the time offset. The adjustment may synchronize the local application clock with the precision timing signal of a second communication network. In response, a remote device may communicatively couple with the second communication network.

A terrestrial transceiver beamforms an uplink signal from an airborne transceiver. In the terrestrial transceiver, a radio wirelessly receives an airborne transceiver Identifier (ID) and reference signals from the airborne transceiver. A Baseband Unit (BBU) determines a beamforming instruction based on the airborne transceiver ID and the reference signals. The radio wirelessly transfers the beamforming instruction to the airborne transceiver. The airborne transceiver beamforms the uplink signal based on the beamforming instruction. The radio wirelessly receives the beamformed uplink signal from the airborne transceiver. The BBU receives the beamformed uplink signal from the radio.

Uplink beamforming between an airborne transceiver and a terrestrial transceiver

A wireless communication system beamforms an uplink from an airborne transceiver to a terrestrial transceiver. The airborne transceiver comprises antennas that have an antenna type an aperture beamwidth. The airborne transceiver transfers a transceiver ID to the terrestrial transceiver. The terrestrial transceiver initiates aerial uplink beamforming for the antenna type and the aperture beamwidth based on the airborne transceiver ID. The terrestrial transceiver determines uplink beamforming metrics and altitude for the airborne transmitter. The terrestrial transceiver generates an uplink beamforming instruction and an uplink power instruction for the antenna type and the aperture beamwidth of the airborne transceiver based on the uplink beamforming metrics and altitude. The terrestrial transceiver transfers the uplink beamforming instruction and the uplink power instruction to the airborne transceiver. The airborne transceiver beamforms, amplifies, and transmits an uplink wireless signal to the terrestrial transceiver per the uplink beamforming instruction and the uplink power instruction.

Mitigation of interference between wireless network signals and signals emitted from sources external to the wireless network are disclosed. The wireless network signals may include out-of-band emissions that create interference with the signals emitted from the external source. To mitigate the interference, an antenna is provided with sensors configured to detect when a signal is directed at the antenna from the external source. A controller is configured to activate/deactivate signal transmission from the antenna based on feedback from the sensors in order to mitigate interference with the signal emitted from the external source. The sensors may be configured to detect radar emissions or other types of signal emissions.

Mitigating interference related to wireless network signals

Methods and systems are provided for dynamically recalibrating a beamformer at a cell site based on changes to various characteristics, including environmental characteristics and signal characteristics. A change in temperature, pressure, moisture level, or wind speed may indicate that a recalibration of the beamformer should be triggered. Additionally, at least the phase and amplitude of a received signal from a beacon station, which is used as a reference point, can be compared to the phase and amplitude of a reference signal to determine if one or both of the phase and amplitude has significantly changed. Based on the analysis of the characteristics, recalibration of the beamformer may be triggered.

A secondary UAV flies over the solar-powered UAV at night and illuminates the solar-powered UAV's solar panels to help supplement the solar-powered UAV's battery charge mid-flight. The secondary UAV could be equipped with a directional light source for providing light of a color and intensity selected for optimal absorption by the solar cells of the solar-powered UAV. As the secondary UAV flies over the solar-powered UAV, the secondary UAV could thus direct its light source at the solar-powered UAV for absorption by the solar cells, to help supplement the solar-powered UAV's battery charge. Further, the secondary UAV could potentially recharge multiple solar-powered UAVs during a single nighttime mission.

Alternatives to satellite signals for synchronization in macro network

Embodiments of the invention include a system for reducing tropospheric ducting and tropospheric refraction in a wireless telecommunication network. A base station or network component receives weather information and determines if conditions are right for tropospheric ducting or tropospheric refraction. A simultaneous rise in UL interference, call failure rates, and call drop rates in adjacent markets can indicate tropospheric ducting. A rise in UL interference, call failure rates, and call drop rates by devices in one market can indicate tropospheric refraction. Where these UL interferences, call failure rates, and call drop rates occur daily for a similar duration each day, they are treated as being caused by tropospheric propagation and a mitigation routine is implemented through antenna down-tilt.
