In a process for manufacturing an interior fitted part for motor vehicles, such as an inside roof lining for automobiles, a staple-fiber formed fabric of a drawn polyethylene terephthalate matrix component and of a binding component is subjected at least once during the process to an annealing process, which increases the thermal stability of the fitted part. Also disclosed is a fitted part manufactured by this method.

Disclosed is a flame barrier made of a nonwoven fabric of partially graphitized polyacrylonitrile fibers having a weight per unit area of 40 to 100 g/m.sup.2 and a maximum thhickness of 1.8 mm. The nonwoven fabric is bonded with highly energetic water jets. The flame barrier can be used as a component of a planar multi-layer structure.

An artificial split suede leather, especially for sport or casual style shoes, is a split, needled, nonwoven material of unshrunk fibers containing at least 20% polyamide fibers by weight of the fibers having a trilobate, Y-shaped cross section. In a process of making it, only needling is used for consolidating the fibers. A spherical filler may also be used.

The present invention provides a method for manufacturing a fabric-type artificial leather, wherein a nonwoven fabric is formed by using a dry method to join together hydrophobic fibers. The fabric so formed is densified by needling and the activation of shrinking forces. It is then impregnated with a mixture of a heat sensitive elastomeric bonding agent, powdered barium sulfate and a compound that reacts with acid to form a gas. The impregnated fabric is then exposed to a heated, acidified liquid which triggers coagulation of the bonding agent and liberates a gas formed by reaction of the acid and acid-reactive compound. The resulting solidified fabric is then washed, dried and ground-over on at least one side to produce a nap. Finally, the fabric is intensively fulled.

A hydrophilic foam is produced by mixing an isocyanate terminated branched polyethylene polyol with a polyester prepolymer and water. The foam may be used to impregnate fabrics, e.g., non-wovens, to produce reinforced sheets of foam of high absorbency and markedly improved abrasion resistance. Preferred polyesters are condensation products of adipic acid plus one or more alkanediols or a polylactone. Other prepolymers may also be included in the mix undergoing foaming, along with conventional additives.

A breathable lining and shaping material especially suited for garments, comprising a nonwoven layer of randomly arranged fibers superposed on a nonwoven layer of oriented fibers, means holding together the fibers of each layer and holding the layers together, and an outer binder imprinted on the outer face of the oriented fiber layer, the weight of the outer binder being at most 50% of the material weight, the length to width strength ratio of the randomly arranged fiber layer ranging from about 4:1 to 1:4. Advantageously a heat activatable adhesive is provided at spaced locations on the outer face of the randomly arranged layer, whereby the material can be joined to the underside of a garment by hot pressing. The outer binder on the outside of the oriented fiber layer preferably is printed in a regular pattern to ensure that all fibers are tied down by bonds at multiple points.
