A method is disclosed for operating an electronic data processing system () operable under an operating system. The electronic data processing system has a boot system () for selectively loading an operating system from one of a plurality of storage media (). The boot system is accessible to an external user after the user executes an identification protocol with the boot system. The identification protocol is a challenge-response protocol based on a challenge generated by the boot system. More particularly, the challenge is randomly generated by the boot system and communicated to the user in an outgoing message and the user generates a response to the challenge as an incoming message to the boot system. A specific application is related to an electronic data processing system, and to a weighing scale (), where the authentication system includes the electronic data processing system.

A weighing scale () for a retail store counter includes a housing (), a load-receiving platform () on top of the housing, and operating components () enclosed therein, including a weighing cell (). A load-transmitting mechanical connection () couples the weighing cell to the load-receiving platform. Analog and digital weighing electronics convert electrical weight signals of the weighing cell into digital weighing results. A touchscreen display panel () interacts with a human operator, and is configured as a layered assembly with a liquid crystal display (), a projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen () with a plurality of touch-sensing points, and a protective glass plate () on top of each other. The layered assembly is integrated horizontally in the load-receiving platform facing the human operator. The top surface operates as a load-receiving surface () a touch field keyboard () and a display window ().

A weighing scale () is designed for use in a first and a second configuration. In the first configuration, a base unit () has a main plane disposed horizontally with a load receiver () extending parallel thereto. A weighing cell () is mounted under the load receiver in the base unit and measures a weighing force acting perpendicular to the main plane. In the second configuration, the main plane is disposed vertically, with the load receiver hanging below the base unit as a suspended weighing pan, with the weighing cell mounted in the base unit to measure a vertical weighting force that is parallel to the main plane of the base unit.

A visual display apparatus comprises a multisegment bar display (2) having display characters (16) divided into two groups. In the first group individual outer segment bars (17) are each associated with a respective permanent marking which indicates a specific information item or class of information items, and are connected in a closed cycle whereby the instantaneously actuated display can be advanced forward or backward in the closed cycle from one segment bar (17) to another by keys (4,5). A sequence of display patterns representing parameter values is displayed in the second group of display characters (16), which sequence and which set depends on the segment bar (17) which is instantaneously actuated in the first group, and a desired parameter value can be selected from among the sequence by depressing an 'acceptance' key (6). The parameters for equipment can be adopted rapidly and under conditions of rapid surveyability, whereby a selection for each of a number of parameters can be made from a plurality of parameter values, so that the parameters can be set in advance of an operation phase.
