A method of controlling operation of an air conditioning system () includes measuring a compressor speed of one or more chillers () of an air conditioning system and measuring a refrigerant pressure of the one or more chillers of the air conditioning system. A chiller load is calculated using the compressor speed and the refrigerant pressure. An air conditioning system includes one or more chillers. Each chiller includes a compressor (), a condenser () operably connected to the compressor, and an evaporator () operably connected to the compressor and the condenser. A controller () is operably connected to the one or more chillers and is configured to calculate a chiller load utilizing a measurement of compressor speed and a measurement of refrigerant pressure of the chiller.

On board chiller capacity calculation

A method of evaluating damper operation for a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system includes moving a plurality of dampers of the HVAC system collectively to a baseline damper position. The plurality of dampers is positioned at a flowpath including a fan driven by a motor. The fan is operating by switching the motor on and a baseline output level at the motor is measured. A first damper of the plurality of dampers is commanded to move from the baseline damper position to a first damper position and a first output level at the motor is measured. The first output level is compared to the baseline output level. A difference is indicative of successful movement of the first damper from the baseline damper position to the first damper position.

Economizer damper fault detection

A control system for controlling delivery of either heated or cooled water over a common water line to a plurality of heat exchangers. The control system includes a hydronic system controller which polls the heating or cooling demands of zone controllers controlling the respective delivery of water to the individual heat exchangers. The hydronic system controller is operative to implement a changeover between delivery of heated water to delivery cooled water or vice versa. The implemented changeover preferably includes checking the temperature of the water being returned to the source or sources for heating or cooling the water as well as defining a changeover time period which must occur in the event that the temperature of the water in the return line is not within a predefined range.

A start time for the provision of the conditioned water is thereafter determined by the system controller in the event that any combination of current and future demands for conditioned water exceeds the minimum level or number of demands necessary to authorize a provision of conditioned water.

A start time for the provision of the heated or cooled water is thereafter determined by the system controller in the event that there is any combination of current and future heating or cooling demands that exceed the minimum level or number of demands necessary to authorize a heating or cooling. The system controller is also operative to implement a changeover between delivery of water conditioned in one way, such as for example heating, to the delivery of water conditioned another way, such as for example cooling.

A control system for a reversible heat pump includes a system controller which polls the heating or cooling demands of zone controllers associated with a series of heat exchangers downstream of the heat pump. The system controller is operative to configure the heat pump in response to which of the demands is dominant. The system controller is also operative to change the configuration of the heat pump in response to a change in dominant demand. The implemented change in heat pump configuration is preferably premised on the temperature of water returned to the heat pump being within a predefined range of temperature. The return water temperature requirement may be overriden by the system controller if an acceptable period of time for allowing the returning water temperature to reach an acceptable temperature level has elapsed.

Reversible heat pump system

A subcooling unit within a vapor compression refrigerant system contains a controller for controlling the rate of flow of refrigerant into the chamber of the subcooling unit. The controller receives a sensed temperature of the fluid entering a condensing unit within the chamber of the subcooling unit and computes a condensing pressure setpoint for the refrigerant flowing into the chamber of the subcooling unit. The controller is operative to compare the pressure in the subcooling chamber with the condensing pressure setpoint so as to determine whether to possibly increase or decrease the rate of flow of the refrigerant into the chamber of the subcooling unit.

Refrigerant subcooler for vapor compression refrigeration system

A system controls the pressure at which conditioned is to be provided to one or more zones to be heated or cooled by the conditioned air. The system actively computes a setpoint for the pressure with a location in a duct system upstream of where any of the conditioned air is to be provided to the zones. The setpoint is computed as a function of the positional statuses of dampers within the duct system that regulate the flow of the conditioned air to the respective zones. The actively computed setpoint is compared with a sensed pressure in the duct system in order to determine whether the pressure in the duct system needs to be changed.

Variable air volume control system

A system for providing air quality control for an indoor area divided into a plurality of zones, whereby air quality is controlled both centrally and at each of the zones, including a central controller, a central damper, a supply air stream duct, a return air duct, a plurality of zone controllers, a plurality of zone dampers, a plurality of air quality sensors (i.e., CO.sub.2, volatile organic compounds, humidity, etc. . . ) and a plurality of temperature sensors. A method for providing air quality control for an indoor area divided into a plurality of zones, whereby air quality is controlled both centrally and at each of the zones, including the steps of: reading an output value of an air quality sensor from one of the zones, comparing the output value with a zone maximum threshold value and a zone minimum threshold value, modulating the zone damper to vary a supply air flow into the zone, repeating the first three steps for each zone, determining a predetermined function (i.e., average, maximum, minimum, etc. . . ) of the output values from all of the zones, comparing the function of the output values with a central maximum threshold value and a central minimum threshold value, and modulating the central damper to vary the flow of outside air into the supply air stream.

System for providing integrated zone indoor air quality control

A process is disclosed for adjusting the valve position of flow control valves which govern the flow of a heat exchange fluid to a plurality of individually controlled zones. The process resides primarily in a system controller in communication with a number of separate zone controllers. The system controller periodically obtains temperature and mode of operation information from each zone controller and thereafter computes the amount of time necessary to change the temperature by one degree in each zone. The computed amount of time per degree change in temperature is compared with the average for all zones in a similar mode of operation. Offsets are calculated for active flow control valves in each zone depending on whether the computed amount of time per degree change in temperature is above or below the average for all corresponding zones in the same mode of operation. The offsets are transmitted to the zone controllers for use in adjusting the valve positions that are to be commanded by the zone controllers.
