A seal includes an outer housing and a seal bag internal to the outer housing. The outer housing can be positioned between a pump and an electric motor of an electric submersible pump. The seal bag can include an outer layer and an inner layer. The outer layer can be made from a first material to retain a structure of the outer layer in a swellable state in a wellbore. The inner layer can be made from a second material that is swellable in the wellbore in response to contact with a polar substance to seal a tear in the outer layer.

A fallback prevention valve apparatus, system and method is described. An electric submersible pump (ESP) fallback prevention system includes an ESP assembly positioned in a downhole well, the ESP assembly including production tubing extending between a centrifugal pump and a surface of the downhole well such that during operation of the ESP assembly production fluid flows upward from the centrifugal pump through the production tubing to the surface, the production tubing including a fallback valve actuatable by the flow of production fluid, the fallback valve actuatable between an open position, wherein production fluid flowing upward through the fallback valve actuates the fallback valve into the open position, and a closed position, wherein production fluid flowing downward through the fallback valve actuates the fallback valve into the closed position, the closed position blocking sand carried by the production fluid from falling into the centrifugal pump.

An electric submersible pump includes a pump and an electric motor coupled to the pump. An electric submersible pump also includes a seal that is positioned between the pump and the electric motor. The seal has an outer housing and a seal bag internal to the outer housing. The seal bag has an outer layer and an inner layer. The outer layer is made from a first material to maintain the structure of the seal bag in a swellable state within the wellbore environment. The inner layer is made from a second material that can swell in response to contact with a polar substance and seal a tear in the outer layer of the seal bag.

An electric submersible pump includes a pump, an electric motor that is coupled to the pump by a rotatable shaft, a seal section that is positioned between the pump and the electric motor. The seal section contains an additive and a motor oil for the electric motor. The additive includes one or more superabsorbent polymers or imidate salts to contact the motor oil and to react with a wellbore fluid from a wellbore to prevent premature failure of the electric submersible pump from the wellbore fluid contamination of the motor oil.

An electric submersible pump used to pump fluids inside a borehole during operation is described. The electric submersible pump and its motor can be powered using an inductive power coupling. The electric submersible pump comprises a sealed extension that houses a pickup inductive coil assembly that is electrically coupled to a power source at a surface of the borehole. Power runs through the primary inductive coil assembly and the primary inductive coil is positioned relative to the pickup inductive coil assembly such that the electrical current flowing in the primary inductive coil assembly from the power source and through the power cable induces a voltage in the pickup inductive coil assembly.

An example electric submersible pump assembly comprises an electric submersible pump comprising a pump intake, a storage chamber in fluid communication with the discharge side of the electric submersible pump, and a tubing configured to allow for fluid communication between the pump intake and the storage chamber such that fluid may flow from the storage chamber into the pump intake.

A crossover system, method and apparatus for an electric submersible pump (ESP) gas separators. A crossover of an ESP gas separator includes a first helical pathway for higher density fluid that extends at an angle of 10&#xb0; to 40&#xb0; from a horizontal plane through the crossover, the first helical pathway fluidly coupled to a spider bearing including crescent shaped vanes that remove rotational momentum from the higher density fluid, a second helical pathway for lower density fluid that tangentially intersects a crossover jacket, the first helical pathway and the second helical pathway defined by a channel having teardrop shaped openings in the crossover jacket that define channel exit ports venting to a casing annulus, and teardrop shaped openings in a crossover skirt that define a channel entrance, where the first helical pathway is around the channel and the second helical pathway is through an inside of the channel.

A method of live well artificial lift completion includes hanging an umbilical on a wellhead of a live well, the umbilical fluidly coupling a production pump to a well surface and electrically coupling an electric motor to a surface power source, the electric motor powering the production pump. The umbilical includes coiled tubing surrounded by a jacket. The umbilical also includes power cables extruded inside the jacket to form a smooth jacket outer surface. The method also includes creating a pressure seal inside the umbilical during deployment of the umbilical into the live well, the pressure seal inside the umbilical created using a blowout plug positioned to block a discharge of the production pump. The method further includes forming an annular pressure seal during deployment of the production pump to obtain well control, the annular pressure seal formed using an annular bag coupled to the wellhead.

A live well artificial lift completion system includes an artificial lift pump discharge, a discharge adapter body secured between the artificial lift pump discharge and an umbilical, the discharge adapter body including an electrical connector fastened to an exterior of the discharge adapter body, an inner diameter of the discharge adapter body fluidly coupled to the artificial lift pump discharge, the umbilical including coiled tubing supportively hanging from an umbilical hanger within a wellhead, the umbilical hanger positioned in a tubing head spool, an inner diameter of the coiled tubing fluidly coupled to the inner diameter of the discharge adapter body, a jacket surrounding the coiled tubing, and a power cable extruded inside the jacket, wherein the power cable is connectable between the electrical connector of the discharge adapter body and a surface power source.
