Molten metal passing through an outlet opening is guided in free fall by a magnetic field which rotates about the vertical axis of the opening to impress a rotation in the stream of molten metal. A further magnetic field rotating at the same rate but out of phase with the first can increase the rotation. At least one toroidal magnetic field coaxial with the rotating field can be used to shape the cross section of the pouring stream.

Method and apparatus for the vertical casting of metal melts

The invention pertains to a process for the control of the strike positions of a plurality of electron beams on a melting bath. In this case, the light beams issuing from the surface of the melting bath are sent to a radiation splitter, the separated beams of which, as the case may be, are sent via additional radiation splitters to photoelectric sensors. The output signals of these sensors are sent to a control, which guides the electron beam guns, from which the electron beams issue.

Furthermore, one offbearing apparatus (25, 26) and one offbearing chamber (23, 24) are associated with each strand-casting mold, and at least one vacuum valve (19, 20) is disposed between each strand-casting mold (15, 16) and the offbearing chamber (23, 24) associated with it. Preferably the strand-casting molds (15, 16) are disposed in a chamber floor (2d) configured as a turning disk.

Disclosed is an apparatus for cleaning sulphur and nitrogen containing flue gases by adding gaseous reagents and by a reaction in a reaction chamber which the reactants pass through in the axial direction and are exposed to at least one electorn beam. The apparatus includes at least one reaction chamber and at least one electron beam source from which the electron beam is admitted into the reaction chamber through at least one pressure step zone. The electron beam source is structurally combined with the reaction chamber in such a manner that the axis of the pressure step stage runs parallel to the axis of the reaction chamber and that the electron beam can be rotationally deflected about this axis to traverse each surface element of a flow cross section of the reaction chamber running perpendicular to the axis at at least one position in the flow path.

A vaporization arrangement for coating substrates disposed in an areal region, or past through an areal region, comprises a rectangular vaporization crucible with a crucible rim, as well as plurality of electron guns each having an X-Y deflecting system. The electron reflection and the simultaneous blocking off of gases is achieved by guide surfaces substantially parallel and symmetrical with the beam axis which extend along the beam for at least ten millimeters.
