Resistive ribbon for high resolution printing

A printing apparatus employing a print head comprising a plurality of thin wire print electrodes mounted in a single plane and held in a closely-spaced row by an electrically insulating resilient material so that the wires are individually movable out of the planar alignment to a limited extent with respect to the other wires in the array. A relatively rigid backing member is provided to support the electrode array and the print head is mounted in a relatively fixed position relative to the print ribbon and a predetermined pressure is produced between the print head and the electrothermal print ribbon during printing operations.

Print head for high resolution electrothermal printing apparatus

A doctor blade is used to apply a powdered toner to the depleted regions of a resistive thermal transfer ribbon. The ribbon is then moved adjacent a heating electrode that passes current through a resistive substrate of the ribbon so that a transverse line on the ribbon is heated and the added toner is fused in the depleted regions of the ribbon. The heated area of the ribbon is thereafter compressed by a cold roller to provide a uniform re-inked surface.

Apparatus for re-inking a ribbon in a thermal transfer printing system

Wetting by toners of the surface of reusable photoconductors in electrophotographic processes results on image cycling in adhesion of the toner to the photoconductor surface to form a film. Such filming is reduced or eliminated by including in the developer a small amount of certain unpigmented organic polymeric materials having smaller particle size than the pigmented toner particles. Suitable organic polymers are fluorinated hydrocarbon polymers and copolymers, and polyethylene.
