A method and system for treating brain disorders comprises detecting activity of a first target area of the brain via a first implanted sensor and determining the presence of target brain activity by analyzing the detected brain activity in combination with treating the user based upon the determined presence of target brain activity by supplying a first therapeutic agent to the first target area via a first implanted fluid delivery member including at least one distal opening adjacent to the first target area. In addition, the system may be used as well for testing the effectiveness of drugs.

Apparatus and method for monitoring and treatment of brain disorders

An adjustable optical mount adapted for use with an optical table defining a reference plane includes a hollow housing with openings in the side walls to allow passage of an optical beam therethrough, a gimbal base fixed on the top of the housing, a gimbal plate adjustably mounted under the gimbal base, and a carrier bracket fixed to the gimbal plate for holding preselected optical elements within the housing along the path of the beam. Adjustment mechanisms are provided to tilt and rotate the gimbal plate so as to align the optical element on a selected axis relative to the reference plane.

A calibration device is disclosed for use with fluorescence photometers of the type which direct an excitation radiation at a sample to be tested, and then read the fluorescent emission from the sample to identify bacterial growth in the sample. In the past the emission reading accuracy of fluorescence photometers has been tested by passive standards. The known standards have some shortcomings, in that they may have varying characteristics with time and temperature, and further because they are difficult to manufacture without experiencing some variation between the standards. The present invention addresses the problem by generating a particular fluorescent emission and directing that emission towards a photometer to be tested. Since the emission which is directed outwardly of the calibration device is predetermined and known, this directed radiation can be compared to that which is read by the fluorescence photometer. In this way, a positive evaluation of the reading accuracy of the photometer can be made. In further embodiments of this invention, a second circuit is included in the calibration device for reading the excitation radiation from the photometer. The excitation radiation, as read, can be compared to that which the photometer was expected to generate. The emission radiation characteristics can be generated dependent upon the excitation radiation, or can be a fixed amount.

Calibration device for fluorescence photometers

The detection of bacterial growth or the performance of other interrogative processes in multiple sample vials is accomplished using a moving rack that selectively couples optical locations to an optical excitation and detection system. The apparatus includes a drive mechanism combining agitation of the culture vials with a sequential scanning of an array of optical fibers, preferably by a spectrophotometric excitation and detection system. Selection of each culture vial provides, for example, optical detection of bacterial growth by fluorescence or other spectrophotometric measurements. A rack for holding vials is preferably the only moving assembly, and requires no mechanical or electrical interconnection with the excitation and detection system for its operation. In general, the present invention relates to the optically indexed presentation of the optical guides, to many remote sample sites in the form of a geometric array at the interface between the moving culture vial rack assembly and the spectrophotometric excitation and detection system fixed to the body of the instrument. Methods of transmitting and receiving electromagnetic radiation to and from sample vials held in a movable rack include the steps of coupling the sample vials to an optical fiber and terminating the optical fiber at an optical coupling location. The rack is then moved to align at least one of the coupling locations with an excitation and detection system.
