A dispensing device comprising a container with product outlets, a screw that operates a piston within the container and a torsion spring that biases the screw. The torsion spring includes a hoop having one or more inner tabs. The hoop is frictionally engaged with an interior surface of the container. A boss is fixed to the screw and a flexible arm interconnects the hoop and boss. The torsion spring also includes a spoke that is angularly offset from the flexible arm. Application of a rotational force to the screw urges the piston toward the container outlets, causing the flexible arm to yield, allowing the boss to rotate relative to the hoop until the spoke engages an inner tab. Further rotation releases the hoop from frictional engagement with the container. Once the rotational force is removed, the hoop re-engages the container interior surface and the flexible arm regains its original shape, causing the hub and screw to counter-rotate, which simultaneously moves the piston away from the fluid outlets.

Flow control product dispenser

A cosmetic tester (10, 110, 210, 310, 410) comprises a base (12, 112, 212, 312, 412) and a cap or matrix (14, 414). The base includes a pedestal (18, 418), a support (20, 120, 220, 320, 420) and an intermediate portion (22, 122, 222, 322, 422) which connects the support to the pedestal. A sample (16, 116, 216, 316, 416) of lip creme or other cosmetic, which is configured as a shell, is secured to the support. The matrix/cap is disposed over the shell and includes a tubular wall (32, 432) which is configured to mate closely with the intermediate portion sufficient for essentially preventing passage of any of the sample between the wall and the intermediate portion, but for permitting escape of air therebetween. The matrix terminates in opposed open (34, 434) and closed (36, 136, 436) ends. The closed end is provided with an inner surface (38, 138, 438) in intimate contact with the sample to provide the it with an external surface whose configuration matches that of the matrix's inner surface. The cosmetic tester is constructed by using the matrix as a mold into which a measured quantity of molten cosmetic is placed. The support is then inserted within the matrix and into contact with the molten cosmetic to compression mold it into the shell. After molding, the shell may be spaced slightly from the closed end of the matrix by temporarily forcing ribs (440) beyond a transition (452) in the matrix to produce a resilient force during molding of the shell and thereafter permitting the resilient force alone or by a mechanical separating force between the base (412) and the matrix-cap (414) to slightly move the shell away from contact with the closed end. Alternatively, the cosmetic may be inserted into and between an assembly of the base and the support by injection or transfer molding.

Cosmetic tester

A container (12) includes a discharge outlet (18) and a pliant tubular wall (16) which extends longitudinally from the outlet. The wall of the container is adapted to be deformed by being squeezed for dispensing a mass (24) from the container through the outlet. A piston follower (26, 126) in the container, which is movable towards the outlet and against the mass, has seals (60, 61; 160, 162) that slide on, yet remain sealed with the wall to prevent both leakage of the mass past the seals out of the container and leakage of air past the seals into the container. Degradation in the sealing engagemenet of the seals with the container wall, when the wall is squeezed, even under excessive force, is essentially prevented by a rigid support (72), which is embodied as a ring (138) or radially and longitudinally extending webs (42) acting as struts. The rigid support ensures that the seals will not lose contact with the inner wall surface (17) of container (12). Latches (50, 150) on the follower prevent substantially all movement of the follower in a direction away from the outlet but permit movement of the follower in a direction toward the outlet. The latches are sufficiently distanced from the seals so that neither the deflectability of the latches nor the sealing of the seals is degraded.

Dispensers for fluent masses with enhanced sealing and latching

A dispenser for stick type products such as cosmetics and the like which tend to shrink with age includes a novel cup or godet to prevent the stick from moving axially out of the cup. The interior wall of the cup includes a plurality of spaced axially disposed and radially inwardly projecting ribs of dove-tail cross-section. These ribs bite into the stick and function as dove-tail locks to prevent the outer surface of the stick from moving axially and rotationally with respect to the cup, even if stick shrinkage takes place. A screw type dispenser is also described as typical of the types of dispenser with which the cup may be used.

Dispensing device for cosmetic sticks and the like

An improved dispenser for fluent masses such as toothpaste, lotions, chemicals and the like, includes a body member having a chamber which receives a collapsible and flexible pouch. Associated with the body member is a pumping chamber preferably comprised of a lower and upper housing. The pump chamber, pouch and discharge aperture of the dispenser are at essentially ambient atmospheric pressure, and there is provided a check valve mechanism which sequentially permits flow of material from the pouch into the pump chamber as material is discharged from the discharge spout. The discharge spout is configured and arranged to inhibit flow of air through the discharge spout back into the pump chamber. Various structures and arrangements are described.

Dispenser for fluent masses

The present invention relates to an Improved Mascara Applicator which is used to apply mascara to eyelashes. The Improved Mascara Applicator of the present invention incorporates a unique applicator design which contains a multiplicity of rows of closely spaced and evenly spaced applicator flukes which permits each eyelash to be evenly coated with mascara. The unique applicator design also incorporates a series of communicating channels between the multiplicity of rows of applicator flukes in order to permit mascara to flow from one row to the next. This built in mascara reservoir channel design feeds each of the mascara coating flukes with mascara in order to assure proper mascara flow to each eyelash. This unique design further eliminates the requirement of frequently dipping the mascara applicator into a pool of mascara to replenish the applicator. The present invention also relates to an improved method of manufacturing the head of this mascara applicator.

Mascara applicator

A metering or dosing device connected to the neck of a squeeze-type tube or container, and capable of metering the amount of fluent material that can be discharged from the container after each removal of a closure cap screw-threaded, or otherwise secured, onto the neck of the container. The dose to be dispensed by the device is determined by the extent to which the cap is mounted on the container.

A spring actuated pump device is mounted on a container for fluids, the device including a pump chamber into which fluid from the container can flow, the spring expanding and forcing a cylinder structure against the fluid in the chamber to pressurize it, in order that opening of a discharge valve will effect spraying of a desired quantity of fluid from the device, a suitable nut being threadedly connected to the cylinder structure to enable such structure to be shifted axially, in response to rotation of the nut relative to the container and cylinder structure, to compress the spring and store additional fluid pressure energy therein. A check valve permits ambient air to enter the container to prevent a vacuum condition from developing therein as fluid is withdrawn therefrom. Moreover, fluid is prevented from dribbling from the discharge valve of the device as the spring nears the end of its expansion range. Additionally, fluid leakage between a piston and supporting housing for the pump, along which the cylinder structure is slidable, is prevented by the action of pressure in the pump chamber forcing the piston more firmly into sealing relation to the housing.

Pump devices for dispensing fluids

A spring actuated pump device is mounted on a container for fluid, the device including a pump chamber into which fluid from the container can flow, the spring forcing a cylinder structure against the fluid in the chamber to pressurize it, in order that opening of a finger actuated discharge valve will effect spraying of a desired quantity of fluid from the device, a suitable captive nut being swivelly mounted on the container against axial movement with respect thereto, the nut being threadedly connected to the cylinder structure to enable such structure to be shifted axially in response to rotation of the nut relative to the container and cylinder structure to compress the spring and store additional fluid pressurizing energy therein.

A device for dispensing fluids employs a manually actuated pump mounted in the neck of a conventional container. The pump includes a stationary piston and a shiftable cylinder which form a pump chamber. The piston includes a check valve which controls the fluid inlet to the pump chamber. The cylinder is spring biased in a direction which pressurizes the fluid in the pump chamber. An upwardly extending neck of the cylinder is exteriorly threaded and carries a discharge valve. A cap which fits over the container neck, cylinder neck and discharge valve has an internally threaded tubular portion which can be engaged with the thread on the cylinder neck. The cap can be turned with the threads engaged to lift the cylinder against the bias of the spring and draw fluid into the pump chamber. With the cap removed, the discharge valve can be opened to allow fluid in the pump chamber to flow through the cylinder neck and exit from the discharge valve.

Pump device for dispensing fluids

A roll-on dispenser comprises a generally tubular barrel having an open forward end and a generally tubular ball-carrying member having an open rear end which is slidably received in the chamber of the barrel. The ball-carrying member has a ball applicator rollably mounted in its forward end. The rear end of the barrel is vented to the atmosphere, and a one-way follower device is slidably disposed in the barrel chamber for forward sliding movement. A cap is adapted to be threaded on the ball-carrying member and, when screwed thereon, pulls the ball-carrying member forwardly in the barrel chamber to increase the effective volume of the chamber and create a partial vacuum or sub-atmospheric pressure therein, whereupon the atmospheric pressure in the rear end of the barrel chamber will force the one-way follower forwardly by a distance corresponding to the volume of fluent material previously dispensed. When the cap is screwed on the ball-carrying member it causes compression of a compression spring to store energy therein. When the cap is removed the compression spring expands to release its stored energy and force the ball-carrying member rearwardly in the barrel chamber to pressurize the fluent material in the chamber.

Dispenser for fluent material

A cosmetic applicator, such as a lipstick applicator, includes an inner cosmetic holder or cup in which a cosmetic mass or lipstick is securable, and which is disposed within a carrier sleeve fixed to a base and surrounded by a tubular member having an internal helical groove or thread receiving one or more cup keys extending through longitudinal slots in the sleeve into the helical groove, or meshing with the internal helical thread, so that relative turning between the tubular member and the carrier and base effects advancing and retracting movements of the cup and cosmetic mass along the carrier sleeve. The carrier sleeve has an unslotted forward extension on which an enclosing cap can be mounted which has substantially the same external diameter as the tubular member and base, resulting in an applicator of greater slimness than prior applicators, better appearance and requiring less material.
