The presently disclosed subject matter is directed to a barrier film that maintains an oxygen barrier after being subjected to autoclaving conditions. The film comprises one EVOH layer positioned as a core layer, and one EVOH layer positioned directly adjacent to an outer layer comprising highly permeable material having a moisture vapor permeability greater than about 40 g-mil/100 in-day-atm. During autoclaving, the barrier properties of the EVOH layer positioned adjacent to the outer layer allows improved recovery of oxygen barrier properties. In addition, during rewetting applications, the internal EVOH layer maintains the oxygen barrier. Also disclosed are methods of making and using the disclosed barrier film.

EVOH barrier film with reduced autoclave shock

A multilayer film has a first layer and a second layer. The first layer comprises an additive, a binder, and a crosslinking agent. The additive is a flavor, fragrance, colorant, antimicrobial agent, antioxidant, chelating agent, and/or odor absorbent. The binder is a polysaccharide and/or a protein. The crosslinking agent comprises a compound with at least two carbonyl groups. The second layer comprises a non-water-soluble thermoplastic polymer comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of polyolefin, polyamide, polyester, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl chloride, and polystyrene. Each of the additive, binder, and crosslinking agent are present throughout a thickness of the first layer. Preferably, the first layer is coated onto the second layer, which is preferably a non-water-soluble thermoplastic polymer, e.g., polyolefin, polyamide, and/or polyester. The film is especially useful for cook-in applications, in which a food product (preferably comprising uncooked meat) is packaged in the film with the coated layer against the meat. The meat is then cooked and the additive transfers to the meat, and purge can be very low. The invention also pertains to a process for preparing a cooked food product, process for making a coated film, and articles formed from the film, such as bags and casings.

Additive transfer film suitable for cook-in end use

A packaging structure useful as retention and suspension packaging. The packaging structure comprises a frame and a film connected to the frame. The film comprises first and second layers. The first layer is an outer layer of the film and comprises polyethylene polymer having a density of at least about 0.910 g/cc. The first layer comprises no more than about 20% of the total thickness of the film. The second layer comprises ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer having a density of less than about 0.910 g/cc. The film has an elastic recovery in each of the transverse and longitudinal directions of at least about 60% measured according to ASTM D5459-95 at 100% strain, 30 seconds relaxation time, and 60 second recovery time.

Packaging structure having a frame and film

A tray-type package is disclosed which includes a polyester support member, a product contained on the support member, and a lidding film containing the product and sealed to the periphery of the support member, the lidding film including a sealant layer of a polyester copolymer having greater than about 50% by mole of glycol polymerization units. Preferably, the support member is a foamed or nonfoamed polyethylene terephthalate (PET) tray and the lidding film is a multilayer film which includes a glycol-modified PET sealant layer. Also disclosed is a lidding film having a sealant layer of a blend of a glycol-modified PET and at least one further polymeric component.

A medical solution tubing useful in combination with medical solution packages and pouches includes an outer layer of polypropylene, ethylene propylene copolymer, or modified ethylene propylene copolymer; an intermediate layer comprising a polymeric elastomer, a blend of a low melt index EVA and a high melt index EVA, EnBA, or blends thereof, or a blend of an EVA-based polymeric adhesive and an elastomeric polyester; and an inner layer comprising EVA, a blend of a low melt index EVA and a high melt index EVA, EMA, EnBA, or blends thereof, or PVC.

Medical solution tubing

A laminate comprising two or more films, at least one of the films being a coextruded, multilayer film, wherein the laminate delaminates within the coextruded, multilayer film when the laminate is subjected to a peel force ranging from 0.001 to 2.5 pounds per inch. The laminate advantageously provides the lid for a package and delaminates into a substantially gas-impermeable portion and a gas-permeable portion, with the gas-permeable portion being bonded directly to a product support member of the package. In this manner, the gas-impermeable portion may be peelably removed from the package to allow atmospheric oxygen to enter the interior of the package. The gas-permeable portion may be provided by perforating the delaminatable, coextruded film and bonding such film to the support member so that, when the laminate is caused to be delaminated within the perforated, coextruded film, the perforations are exposed to the ambient atmosphere and thereby allow for rapid ingress of oxygen into the interior of the package.

A film suitable for packaging medical solutions and other pH sensitive products wherein the product pH is controlled by including an ionomer resin as a core layer, strength layer, or other distinct intermediate layer positioned between a sealant layer and a vinyl carboxylate copolymer containing layer.

pH control polymer

An impact resistant film suitable for making medical solution pouches and medical drainage pouches generally includes an interior layer of a polyolefin such as an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylene methyl acrylate copolymer, very low density polyethylene or blends thereof; and outer layers of a high melt flow ethylene propylene copolymer. At least one of the outer layers also includes an elastomer such as a styrene ethylene butylene styrene copolymer. A flexible copolyester can be substituted for one of the outer high melt flow polymer layers. Additional interior layers can also be incorporated in the film structure.

High melt flow polypropylene medical film

A multilayer film generally includes: a) a first layer of a blend of homopolymer or copolymer of polypropylene and elastomer; and b) a second layer in adherence with the first layer and including an ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer having a density of less than or equal to 0.89 grams per cubic centimeter. Such multilayer film is advantageously used to produce flexible pouches for the packaging and administration of medical solutions.
