A digital optical display device incorporated in a scale including a movable measuring member, a code plate with opaque and transparent areas, a stationary light source irradiating the code plate, a seven-segment display adjacent the code plate and having light guide inlets receiving the coded light transmitted through the code pattern on the code plate, a magnetic indexing system associated with the code plate and defining a multiplicity of magnetic indexing locking positions arranged in step by step relation to each other to retain the code plate in any of the multiplicity of discrete positions; a spring coupling between the measuring member and the code plate and yieldable within one magnetic index position of the location at which the measuring member has stopped to locate the code plate at the position of a discrete code pattern.

An optical display presenting a display field at least one digit in a seven segment arrangement, a stack of seven plate elements for each digit and arranged in a stack, a single light source directing light into the light inlet ends of all of the seven plates, a movable shutter element wth transparent and opaque areas movable across the light source and light inlets of the plates, each plate having a chamfered edge portion remote from the light inlet end and reflecting light transversely of the plate and onto the display field.

A bathroom scale with a multi-digit seven segment display of the sensed weight including a movable weighing platform, a lever bridge system and a bias spring resisting and deforming under the load on the platform, a movable code carrier which may rotate, a gear system between the bias spring bridge linkage and code carrier, a code strip with a multiplicity of transparent and opaque areas arranged in a code, an indexing system to stop the code carrier only a predetermined code implements, the indexing system including a magnet or lock, and a generally ladder shaped latch defining indexing implements stopping the code carrier at predetermined positions, a yieldable member in the gearing system, a multi-digit seven segment display including stacked light transmitting plates with light inlets adjacent the code strip of the carrier and light outlets directing light for viewing in a direction orthogonally of the stacked plates.
