A coated abrasive having improved properties of grinding performance and brittleness, said abrasive comprising a backing and an abrasive coating adhered thereon wherein the abrasive coating comprises a suspension containing lapping size abrasive grains and a binder, said binder containing a diacrylated monomer and a triacrylated or higher acrylated monomer.

Coated abrasives with rapidly curable adhesives

An alumina based ceramic fiber having submicron sized alpha alumina crystals and a density of at least 95% theoretical is obtained from a sol-gel process.

Alumina sol-gel fiber

The hardness and microstructure of aluminous abrasives produced from alumina gels are enhanced by introduction of seed material as by wet vibratory milling of the material with alumina media, or by the direct addition of very fine alpha alumina particles in the amount of 1% or less.

Abrasive material and method

Stitch bonded fabric or other arrays of substantially coplanar and coparallel yarns non-interlaced with other yarns are employed to reinforce the backing for coated abrasive products. A preferred construction with continuous filament polyester yarns is described, together with the cloth finishing process employed to prepare a backing for coating with abrasive grain. The product is particularly suitable for making coated abrasive belts.
