A press for forming self-supporting bales of fibrous material from a pulpy mass of the same having a high liquid content wherein the inner sides of the fixed walls of the baling chamber are provided with parallel narrow grooves having holes in their bottoms extending through the walls to the outside of the chamber. The pulpy mass creates rib-like formations in the grooves which block loss of solids but permit escape of liquid from the chamber. The grooves are parallel to the movement of the press head so the grooves are self-cleaning.

Slush pulp baler

A baling machine for particulate material such as wood chips and bark includes a vertically elongated compression chamber provided at its upper end with an inclined inlet feed chute, a downwardly facing vertically movable compression ram in the chamber, an upwardly facing vertically movable gate ram forming the lower end of the chamber during compression, and a bale-strapping assembly associated with the lower end portion of the chamber. A horizontally movable door operating between open and closed positions at the inner end of the feed chute forms part of the wall of the chamber when closed. The leading edge of the door is specially shaped to penetrate the material in the chute and to cooperate with anvil surfaces at the end of its travel to prevent jamming of the door as it closes.

Vertical closed chamber baler

An improved closed chamber baler includes a hopper into which is fed waste paper or other compressible materials to be baled. The material to be baled is forced into a bale chamber by means of a piston operated ram. Means are provided for sequentially guiding a strapping wire about the outside periphery of the compressed material at a plurality of vertically spaced intervals along the compressed material. The strapping wire is tensioned and then twisted or knotted together to form a continuous strap about the compressed material, thereby forming a bale. When the bale has been completely strapped, the compression ram is retracted and an output gate is opened. The bale is then ejected from the bale chamber by an automatic bale ejector. While the invention is disclosed in connection with baling waste paper, the closed chamber baler is capable of other uses, e.g., the baling apparatus embodying the principles of the present invention may be found useful in connection with the strapping of a wide variety of other articles to which multiple strapping loops are applied thereabout sequentially at vertically spaced intervals.

Closed chamber baler

A charging box for a scrap metal shear is provided with a top opening where a compressed block of scrap metal may be loaded. A first ram is provided to the rear of the scrap metal block so that it may be pushed forward for a short distance in the charging box. A second ram is provided whose rear most position is behind the forward most position of the first ram means. After the first ram is retracted the second ram means is brought into position behind the block of scrap to continue movement of the scrap block into the shear. The two rams are so arranged that while the second ram is feeding a block of scrap metal into the shear a second block may be loaded into the charging box and moved forward by the first ram until the first ram has reached its forward most position where the block of scrap may then be engaged by the second ram when it is returned from feeding the first block of scrap into the shear. The means are provided for elevating the second ram above the block of scrap metal as the second ram is returned to its initial engaging position behind the block of scrap.
